This is the vinyl rip for Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica
Good lord, how do I even begin to describe this record? I dare say it's the most important record I've ever heard, and I also dare say it completely changed my perspective on what music should be like or what rules should it follow - or even more - what rules shouldn't it follow. Captain Beefheart - a maniac, a genius, or a little bit of both?
It took me a lot of time to digest this record the first time I heard it. I remember I was asking for free jazz recommendations and someone pointed me towards this record. I listened to maybe 30 seconds and called it quits. It was special and it was intriguing, but a slap across the face. I tried again a few more times until it suddenly hit me like a tornado - within one second it all started to make sense. As chaotic, cacophonic, and utterly bizarre as this record sounds, it was a huge influence on many well acclaimed musicians and artists.
The album's unconventional nature often alienates new listeners. Cartoonist and writer Matt Groening tells of listening to Trout Mask Replica at the age of 15: "I thought it was the worst thing I'd ever heard. I said to myself, they're not even trying! It was just a sloppy cacophony. Then I listened to it a couple more times, because I couldn't believe Frank Zappa could do this to me - and because a double album cost a lot of money. About the third time, I realised they were doing it on purpose; they meant it to sound exactly this way. About the sixth or seventh time, it clicked in, and I thought it was the greatest album I'd ever heard". John Harris of The Guardian later discussed the idea that the album requires several listens to "get it", concluding it still sounded "awful" after six listens. Filmmaker David Lynch has called Trout Mask Replica his favorite album of all time, and John Lydon has also listed the album as one of his favourites, noting, "The first time I played that album, I laughed all the way through." In an October 1991 interview with Guitar Player magazine, when asked about his influences, guitarist John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers said, "the most important inspiration is undoubtedly Zoot Horn Rollo’s playing on Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica. If I listen to it first thing in the morning, I’m assured of a day of unbridled creativity."
And it all wouldn't be worth too much without the production of the man with the stache' - Frank Zappa himself, who was friends with the Captain through high school.
The creation of this record is a history of its own - Don Vliet locking his magic band in a house for the entire creative process for the album, in a period of time described by band members as 'masnionesque' - it included a hefty amount of emotional and physical abuse. But if you wish to put all of this aside you'll realize how the magic band really makes this record shine. Everything falls into place. This is the audio equivalent of the worst possible hangover you could think of - and if this doesn't make you even a little bit intrigued, not even god can help you.
On my trip to London about a year back I went through every possible record store searching just for this record - and I couldn't find it. And hot damn - out of all places I found it in the new arrivals section of my local boutique record store. I could barely believe my eyes - it was almost too good to be true. The sleeve has good shelf wear but the media is surprisingly vibrant. I hesitated trying it out in the record store, expecting it to sound like total shit. Lucky for me, it sounds like perfectly good shit! It is indeed a pleasure to own an old pressing of such a revolutionary record.
Perfect for: Hobo Chang Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Format: LP (I have too much of a hard time finding the exact pressing. It's an old one from the seventies, can't point on the exact one.
