I don’t understand how people could be disappointed in this ending. This was a tragic character who lived in a nightmare for so many years. And people aren’t happy he found happiness again. I thought it was an intentionally ambiguous ending, given the speech that follows this scene. The implication there is that they killed Flint, and that Silver painted over it brightly as he’s always able to. This ending is, indeed, too good to be true. It’s a fantasy sequence, like the grain in Gladiator.
@Journeyman107
4 жыл бұрын
@Van H. The creators have said straight up that the ending is supposed to be ambiguous. The sequence with their reunion was embellished with somewhat dreamy color grading and included no dialogue, hinting that it was some sort of fantasy. The series also never included anything before the title sequence up until the last episode wherein the messenger arrives at the plantation. His question about whether Thomas was there is never answered on screen. Ultimately, in such a gritty universe, could such a happy ending really be possible? That depends on personal point of view, much like history itself. By including this ambiguity and Rackham's speech that follows it, the creators highlight the often thin line between historical fact and myth. This is reflected throughout the series, in things such as Blackbeard's lack of a burning beard and braids and Rackham's wonderful "The truth isn't nearly as interesting." encounter in Philadelphia. To me, these creative decisions with the finale were genius and made for one of the most satisfying, holistic endings to a story I've ever seen. Who says the more absurd exploits related in "A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates" are much more or less truthful than "Treasure Island" or "Black Sails"? The implications are magical. SOURCE: collider.com/black-sails-series-finale-explained/

@Hekateras

@@Journeyman107 We see it on the screen. The show has never never lied to us with the camera. Furthermore, Flint being "unmade" in this way fits with the very same theme of stories that Jack brings up. The story of Flint "dies" when he gets back the same thing that, when he lost it, gave birth to Flint. But most importantly, if this ending is real, it means Silver knew about Thomas's location for WEEKS and could have told Flint at any time, but deliberately chose to withhold it until he could use it to remove Flint. Simultaneously an act of kindness/mercy and unimaginable cruelty, and the pinnacle of Silver's character development. And that's so much more interesting than him just shooting Flint on that island. And finally, the show "unburying the gays", so to speak, is such a revolutionary way to conclude a series such as this that it needs to be what actually happened. Yes, as Rackahm said, the truth isn't always as interesting, but at the same time, truth can be stranger than fiction. Very few people in-universe understood Flint well enough to know what drives him, and to all the rest, "Flint died on that island" is the more narratively satisfying version. As the audience, we're privy to an inglorious inside look... of a character giving up on his goals, losing, and settling for a tiny scrap of personal happiness where he could find it (a theme that's raised repeatedly in season 4, especially with regards to Madi and Silver but also by other characters: there's a conversation between Eleanor and Madi about whether it's possible to walk away from it all and live a life of "isolation and uncertainty, as long as it is lived with someone you love, and who loves you back". Very much a foreshadowing of what Flint ends up doing.) So, in my opinion, whatever ambiguity there is supposed to be, it is a richer, better story when read as the scene having actually happened. Maybe it's the fact that I only finished this show in 2021, but in light of how much the success of certain "gritty" shows has poisoned the prime drama genre as a whole, an ending such as this feels more refreshing and revolutionary than the old ambiguity (as much as I appreciate the artistic intent behind the ambiguity). It's not a happy ending by any means.. so many deaths turn out to be for nothing, characters ultimately fail in the goals they gave so much to achieve, but there's a sliver of personal happiness to be found even amidst the darkness and violence, and maybe, that's good enough, even if you cannot significantly turn the world upside down and for the better.

The only difference is that in the book, flint died alone (wasn't killed) and was always bitter to the very end of his days, here, we see him happy... so we don't know if we see him happy just to get him destroyed again, but so broken that he just doesn't fight anymore and he just waits to his death, or this is a final route, and there won't be any continuation of the saga, and this is just a closing chapter to everyone.

I'm sorry, but I was disappointed with the ending of Black Sails, at least in regards to Treasure Island characters. Flint, a prisoner at a work camp with his gay lover, Billy Bones marooned on Skeleton Island, this is all wrong. And it leaves so much left not done. 1) The treasure. Captain Flint sailed to the island with a handful of men to bury a vast fortune in treasure. He came back alone (obviously having killed the men ashore, leaving one to become a skeleton that would point the way to the treasure). In Black Sails, all that was buried was a single chest of gems. The rest of the Urca gold was returned to the Spanish. 2) Captain Flint. It's not said how Flint died before Treasure Island, only that he died in Savannah and his last words were "Darby McGraw! Darby McGraw! Fetch me the rum!" (Ben Gunn could have overheard him or tended to Flint, so that would explain him knowing Flint's words) It leads us to suspect that Flint might have been dying from wounds he received in battle. 3) The map. One of the key items to the story of Treasure Island, and Black Sails never showed how the map was made, or how it wound up in Billy Bones possession. We all knew Flint was sneaky and didn't trust his crew, so I wouldn't put it past him to make a map in secret. 4) Long John Silver: In Treasure Island, Silver recounted how he lost his leg in battle, the same battle 'Ol Pew lost his eyes.' In Black Sails, he lost the leg as a result of torture from one of Charles Vane's lieutenants. 5) The crew of the Walrus: In the end, the majority of the Walrus crew was killed in battle. But certain crew members were left out of this story completely, such as Blind Pew and Black Dog. At first, I thought Dufresne would become Pew, as he was the only crew member to be seen with spectacles. But that changed after Silver caved in his skull with his peg leg. 6) Billy Bones: The last we saw of Billy, he was marooned on Skeleton Island instead of Ben Gunn (whom we never saw again after the battle) It would have made more sense to have seen him pull into a harbor requesting an inn, and one citizen points him in the way of the Admiral Benbow Inn.

@@lorenzogiorgi6455 I believe they were gonna make billy and flint lovers. but the backlash was so huge against flint they scrapped it and ended it like this. they hinted billy's sexuality in early s1: somebody asked him why he didn't get laid even though they were on land for some time now. he evaded the question. he didn't want a f*** tent etc. these are basic hints all writers give to make you say oh okey that's the gay one. not to mention how he outright ran away from abigail. I already thought in the pilot he was half in love with flint and that's why he kept doing as he asked. (I had no idea about flint) there are also the awkward flirty moments in s1-2. like the almost jealous mrs. barlow conversation in 1x05 at the end of which flint literally winks at billy and the weird charged talk in 2x07 before the crew vote. there are more but I can't remember now. but especially in s1-2; whenever they talk flint just crowds billy or vice versa. they interact with plenty of other characters too but don't act like that.

@@sinjinadams2862 with the deepest respect, the “gay storyline” *is* the show. It’s about a man’s rage due to societal homophobia. @fungusmoon I completely agree with you. The "gay storyline" is the show. All I'm saying is that the creators of the show are f*cking cowards! They tricked and deceived everyone into thinking they were watching a normal pirate show. They wait until they have sucked everyone in and got everyone invested into the show to wait until well into season 2 to say surprise, we're actually making a queer show about gay pirates. They're a bunch of cowards. If they had revealed this fact early in season 1, viewership would probably have plummeted and the show would have been cancelled. Without the gay storyline, the show would have been just as good. The creators had a gay agenda and that's why it's in the show. It may sound strange after me saying all this but I absolutely love this show. The gay storyline has no interest to me but everything else about the show is fantastic.

@@fungusmoon It's been quite a while since I saw the show but despite the intentions of the writers, the gay angle felt very out-of-nowhere. This is the same thing as How I Met Your Mother. 9 seasons, they were talking about Ted meeting the mother of his kids, only to have her show up in the absolute final season, then randomly having her die from god knows what, and then Ted just ends up with Robin. Even if there were hints, they were very obscure and it made the ending feel weird and unfulfilling. I get they wanted to keep it a surprise but they did too good a job at it and the same applies here. Too obscure which made it feel very random and from what I remember, Flint just gave up to be with that dude. I felt so incredibly underwhelmed and as such, I've not rewatched the show and have forgotten most things about it, except that random ending. It's the same with Game of Thrones. Their relationship (and Flint’s sexuality) is the motivation behind literally everything that Flint does, the show makes this very explicit. What an embarrassing way to publicly admit that you didn’t actually pay attention to what you were watching lmao

So Flint was just homosexual who gave up piracy for his one true love? Truly a woke B.S. ending.

He was... He was gay the entire time. Flint was just a character he created out of sadness and anger to get revenge because he thought Thomas was dead. But he isn't dead. He doesn't need to life a shitty and terrible life of a pirate which he didn't even want in the first place if the man who he wanted to avenge was alive the entire time. Did you even watch the show? Because I have a hard time believing that ANYONE who watched it started to finish could miss the fucking point so hard.

@@James-vy5jg the greatest pirate ends up with his BoYfRiEnD? This is rediculous and disgusting. They could've used his relationship with Miranda to creat deepness in his character which they did; after Miranda's death he became cruel, unforgivable and not a chance he could surrender or look for peace with Britain... Before they ruined it in the end.

Frankly, after all the terrible things Flint did over the course of this series, I don't think he deserved this bit of happiness. A guy who lied to his own crew, murdered his loyal right-man, tried to murder one of his other most loyal followers, and devastated an entire city doesn't deserve to be made happy again by reuniting with the love of his life. I think it would have been a more fitting end to the series and punishment for Flint's crimes as a pirate if Thomas had really been dead and he'd been forced to spend the rest of his in the penal colony all alone.
