I came back from a memorial today, and one of the last people who spoke about the dearly departed, said a few words, before pulling out a recreation of that god damn flute. I have more fingers on both hands than the number of times I've cried in the last 10 years. (This is not something I am proud of, it's just how I am.) When the that second note of that song reverberated of my ear drums, the people in my immediate area heard me uncontrollablely mutter "Oh, fucking no, not this song". Instantaneously after those words tripped and tumbled out of my mouth, my eyes exploded. I've never cried so fast in my life and it has been decades since I cried that hard. I completely crumpled... It was rough...so very, very rough... However, it was also the perfect send-off and tribute to an amazing person. This episode will always be remembered by any and all Star Trek fans that watch it. It leaves an impact that stays with us, our entire lives. I'll miss you, Dan, the world is less without you in it.

Well, if you want to go through the entire emotional spectrum in just over an hour, I can recommend the animated shorts from _Honkai Impact 3rd_ , assuming you aren't averse to the anime style. While the shorts are from pivotal moments in the game, and lack a lot of context, it's still quite possible to have an emotional connection, the characters are just that well-written.

So many episodes of that series were pretty eh to say the least. Tbh, I rushed my way through TNG just to watch the Borg episodes. Man, when I watched this episode, I was stunned at how good it was and actually cried when I saw this final scene. Picard lived an entire life; found a wife and had a child. Only for him to be ripped from it and brought back to the Enterprise. You can see the pain and the memories we'll up in him when he grasps that flute. When he plays it, you know the meaning it has for him and the fact that his memories and that flute are now all the remains of that civilisation. The song beautiful and sad but filled with wonder at the same time. This is definitely the best Star Trek episodes I've ever watched and even possibly one of the best episodes of any TV series I've seen. I loved the idea that this civilisation, in an attempt to make their civilisation known forevermore didn't make a golden record like we did. They didn't try to contact other species or try and make it easy for people to find their homework. All they wanted was to show any aliens they encountered was a life. A life with joy, happiness, and sorrow. And to be known for one solitary, beautiful song played on a single flute. I'm tearing up writing this just thinking about the countless lives and cultures that have disappeared even on our planet that haven't even had that. But to have at least one work of art to survive means more than anything.

This was an exceptional episode in the Next Generation series. However, what a tragic burden Picard would have to carry, the rest of his life. Almost like torture. This similar theme was carried over in a few of the other Star Trek series, as well. In Deep Space Nine, Miles O'Brien gets sentenced to live out a prison term with a cell mate named Echar, where he and his cell mate receive so little food over their years of incarceration that they have to stash food during longer periods of food shortage. At one point, Miles in a fit of rage over food, takes Echar's life, and immediately regrets it. The entire event is lived out in 30 minutes to an hour, but Miles experienced something like 30 years of prison time. This plot was again revisited in Voyager, when Tom Paris is wrongly accused and convicted of murder, in a visit to another planets society. His punishment winds up being experiencing and reliving the horrific murder through the victim's eyes, once daily, like an unending nightmare. Pretty messed up. But engrossing, none the less.
