Toni Tennille wrote this song to express her feelings for Daryl "The Captain" Dragon. When she asked him what he thought of it he told her he doesn't even listen to the lyrics. Apparently , he was emotionally distant. Toni said he had a very domineering father which may have attributed to his aloofness. She tried to reach him emotionally throughout their 40 year marriage, but could never really break through. Eventually, they divorced, but remained friends, She was by his side when he died.

"Getting nasty" in those days had to happen in the listener's mind and imagination. Good songwriters and singers knew how to say it without saying it. They teased, flirted, and used "double entendres" to engage listeners...and then left it to us to finish painting the picture! Comparing this song with the gutter lyrics in too much of today's "music" explains why we "older" music lovers are so disappointed with the stuff that's being shoveled out of the stalls today.
@WashashoreProd

Counterpoint: "Miracles", Jefferson Starship, 1975 is basically a Penthouse letter set to music; "Half The Way", Crystal Gayle, 1979 is an ode to creampies.

@@WashashoreProd There are exceptions to everything. But in general "Corker x" is right. Grown ups "got" the lyrics, kids didn't. Now the lyrics' meanings are thrown in your face. And speaking of the gutter, your comment about "Half the Way" shows your mind is in the gutter. I went and watched a video of the song, with the lyrics, and you're just being nasty. The song is about being filled with true love (and loving), and is not about the sexual act.

I dont know if you know but Daryl Dragon (aka The Captain) passed away in January of 2019. Yes they divorced in 2014 but if you read her book Toni Tennille: A Memoir you realize how much she did love him and that she had to leave and try and get some happiness for herself in whatever time she has left. She wrote Do That To Me for Daryl about how she felt after the first time he kissed her. She always said “ It wasn’t do IT to me one more time, it was do THAT to me!!” Simply one of the best voices ever!! She is now 80 years old but still making music and involved in the arts in her community where she resides in Prescott Arizona. She was with Daryl when he passed away and in the end Love really did keep them together because she returned and was by his side the last year of his life. Their music was the soundtrack of my life..I’ve been a huge fan since 75 and will be forever. Thank you so much for introducing their music to a new generation!! My favorite C&T song is The Way I Want To Touch You...written again by Toni for Daryl way back when they first met. Love your videos!

My crush was Freddie Prince. We knew no race back then and I know people don’t believe that but it was a beautiful moment in time after civil rights where we all loved each other so much until they figured out we were powerful and then “they”It just makes me sad for this generation, I am so thankful for having this a mountainous husband of 22 years and four kids before the world lost its mind.
