10th of May, the celebrations of the day:
The day of the 10th of May, for the Romanians, has 3 celebrations. All of them have something to do with King Carol I of Romania of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, who had the longest reign in Romanian history: 48 years (1866 - 1914).
The first celebration is tied to the arrival of Carol I to Bucharest. The Prince leaves the Sigmaringen Castle which was by Dusseldorf and travels across Switzerland and Austria, to Romania, at tne end of April, 1866, with the recognition of French Emperor Napoleon III and the Prussian King, Willhelm I. On 7th of May, he arrives by ferry to Turnu Severin, and on the 10th of May arrives, after 3 days of travelling by chariot or horse, in Bucharest.
The second celebration is the Declaration of Independence of 1877. On the 9th of May, 1877, The Parliament of Romania voted to declare independence from the Ottoman Empire, unanimously. On the 10th of May, the parliament members all headed to the Royal Palace, and Carol I signed the Declaration of Independence. The celebration of the 10th of May was first prohibited in 1917, by the German occupation, and the second time by the communist regime in 1947 after King Michael I's forced abdication.
The third celebration is that, on the 10th of May, 1881, Romania declared Kingdomship and Carol I was crowned King of Romania.
