Had to pause for a moment to comment, as this is quite a nice tutorial to follow along with and exactly what I needed.. But more so, the little things in between like around the 33 minute mark where your giving quick explanations about what and why your using inline, and the little utility functions that go with it.. Excellent basic knowledge to have right there, well done!

This tutorial is simply excellent. Thank you so much. It was great to see the setup for the makefile, learnt a lot from it.

Great great video! Definitely deserves way more attention. I've done audio programming in JUCE and SDL2 but decided to learn PortAudio for something that's more portable while still low level and this was as really helpful intro to PortAudio!

Awesome tutorial! 🏅 I'd love a follow-up video on how to build this for Windows (not on the WSL). 🚀Waiting for the follow-up, by the way.

Thank you for sharing!! I am about to follow along! Those who don't want to install packages locally. you can also run docker container with ubuntu with run command that installs required packages and volume that to working directory. sh into the container you have the virtural enviroment with docker. Correct me if I am wrong.

awesome vid, I just wanted to ask out of pure curiosity, why are you using c libraries when coding in C++?
@chrisrouck
9 ай бұрын
I guess it’s just out of habit. I learned C before C++, and I’m still learning about the C++ standard libraries myself, so for now I guess it’s a hybrid while I’m still more familiar with some C libraries. But I’m sure they’ll phase out of my workflow over time as I learn more about C++. Great question!

@@chrisrouck you could use the c++ variant of those libraries (cstdlib, cstdio). Not sure what would be the difference though

I use the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). It basically gives me terminal access to a Linux virtual machine that I can mount to my Windows filesystem. There are some good articles online that go over how to set it up

How can I read the single microphone from two independent programs by using PortAudio?

Even though I tried everything, I can't overcome this problem. There is a high probability that there is a problem with the lib file, but I couldn't fix it. portaudio.h: No such file or directory

Hi, I want to save to a mp3 file what comes out of the speakers, can you help?
@chrisrouck
9 ай бұрын
My first thought would be to save all captures in the callback data to a single buffer and, once the recording is finished, using an existing C++ library to convert that buffer to an mp3 file. There may even be a way to append streamed data to the mp3 file in smaller chunks as the audio is being captured to save on memory. Unfortunately I’m not that familiar with mp3 encoding, but hopefully this helps point you in the right direction!

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of that! When I upload the follow-up I'll post links to the code in each video's description.
