Steve, good morning. When I became homeless lady year the first 5 weeks of "urban camping" I did was out of my '98 Chevy Suburban. I had researched KZitem's people that live out of their vehicles - by choice - that's how I learned about the RTR in Quartzite.. which I mentioned to you previously. Anyway.. I planned to do what you did, sleeping on the back, w/ my 3rd row folded down for extra room. But when it came to it, because of my bad knees I couldn't climb into the back to live In and sleep. I found sleeping in the driver's seat very comfortable once I reclined it as far back as it would go. And with the help of bungee cords and blackout curtains I had made for great privacy screens to the outside. My only problem was having to pee at night. But I rigged another curtain between where the seat belt is and the door. I could open the door and the curtain would swing out for privacy. During the day I had access to my gym where I could potty, shower, and work out. Until you get a reliable source of power buy your batteries at Big Lots! They sell in branded Duracell for about half of the branded. These ARE actual Duracell batteries, just w/out the name. The Jackery power cells a great investment but pricey. Look into a Harbor Freight generator. I can run power from the home via them our use gas for your power needs. Or, just go to Home Depot and get yourself a 25 or 50 foot run of extension cord and run that from the house. If you'd like more tips I can share YT vids of people I follow that live out of their vehicles (one lady LIVES out of her PRIUS!). GOOD LUCK!

hi terry, thanks for the great tips. i really appreciate it. i've found so many great YT videos on the topic that have been helpful too. doing this in my mom's yard is one thing. doing it on the road is another. not sure i would want to do it for a long time. are you still living full-time in your car? it's so neat that YT is making it so much easier these days for people who have to or just want to. hope all is well!

@@TheGraveyardChannel Steve, thankfully no. I "urban camped" on my Suburban for 5 weeks and the I got into a Veteran's homeless shelter on Long Beach. I was there for roughly 4 months before I got my new apartment. Aside from the late-night potty breaks, I enjoyed living out of my Suburban. I kept w/in a 6-mile radius of where I was living since that was my home turf. I'd hang out on the parking lots of libraries during the day for the free wifi. And same w/ my gym and a couple of Wal*Marts. At night, I'd camp out in the parking lots of a couple of different Wal*Marts, mixing it up every couple of days to avoid being targets for police. At the gym, which was open 24 hours,I could shower, take potty breaks, charge my cell phone when I worked out. Now I didn't eat very healthy, since I didn't have a fridge, eating fast food. But I didn't go crazy. I did keep fresh fruit and bottled water w/ me. I had plans to fix up my Suburban to include a dual battery system so I could run a fridge or fan or laptop w/out w of killing my main battery. But I got into the shelter before I could have up for that. I'm still planning on doing that for future photographic journeys. Overall, I enjoyed camping out in my 'burn. Come and go as I pleased, it was Summer so it wasn't cold at night. I didn't look at it as being homeless but just camping on the city :)

I can relate though, I renovated my dad's home after he moved in. I had to shower in the basement with a hose, and use one of those home port a pottys for months. I enjoyed coming home on the weekends to do laundry and get a shower! Lol. Keep smiling and stay safe. Stacy

My late father would buy used vans, and take the back seats out (if there were any in there), and install a half-couch inside to use as a bed, and installed plywood doors on the open sections underneath the half-couch for storage of camping gear. He would also install large hooks on the upper left corners of the back of the van, and put plastic tubes on them, that contained his fishing poles. Any other camping gear, such as a tent, poles,, pegs, ropes, cookware, plates, cups, utensils, food, a camping stove, and a propane canister for it, (or liquid fuel, if a Coleman Liquid Fuel Stove was used), was stored in the back of the van. Most of the vans my late father owned were big enough to hold two people inside it to sleep; one on the half-couch, and one on the floor, with inflatable mattress. In my father's later years, he slept in the minivan, while I slept in the tent, when we went camping and fishing together. My mother did not go camping with us, due to her disabilities from Polio (she did enjoy daytrips going fishing with the family).

I do this sometimes in the pathfinder. I have a couple of battery powered fans that will last all night long for when it gets hot. There are a couple other things you can get to help aid youa well. Suction cup curtains to block out the windows. Solar power panels for charging the phone and other things such as batteries for the fan. A lot of people will use Starbucks to upload or for internet. They keep it on overnight. There are some other places as well.

When my son was little we used to car camp. It’s one thing in a state park, another at your mom’s. I had set up my 2006 Toyota Highlander for similar “convenience” to be able to stay in it on cross-country trips in my pre-oxygen use days. I ordered 4” thick foam rubber (NOT memory foam-too heavy) and that’s a great base for sleeping. During the day it sits across the back bench seat. Fans that clamp everywhere and can charge off USB from the cig lighter during the day power those as well as electronics.

Steve , I just converted my O 2 COOL this week to 12 volt . If you add the voltage of the batteries together , you will notice it adds up to 12 volts . Take back off fan , you will have a red and black wires . Take a 12 volt male plug and wire from another 12 volt appliance and make sure red wire goes to positive side of male plug and black to negative . On male plug negative will always be on outside edge of male plug . Mine is running right now off my solar to a A G M 12 volt battery inside my trailer . It will run all day and night ! I'm sure you have a female plug in in the backseat of your Ford . Glad to help you good friend ! Your good friend Vinny in good old Fla.

Howdy Steve! In January I bought my dream SUV from Toyota of Orange here near Disneyland...- a beautiful red 2020 Toyota Highlander XLE with front wheel drive. As a realtor I need the extra space for clients, open house signs, etc. BUT my main underlying gut feeling reason for spending $38,600 on a car was that if anything happened: emergency, civil unrest, apartment burned down, had to move back to NJ in case of terminal illness, etc my cat Valentine & I would have a vehicle that would be a workable refuge on wheels. Since I buy my cars new & drive them till they croak, this was a satisfying purchase towards having some reasonable security. Now that we're under lockdown...no regrets!! Sadly there will be alot more folks living out of their cars trying to get back on their feet after this virus crap. There is sleeping bag & ground pad/ camping pillow that all are compacted into an emergency bag in the cargo area. My nephew in NJ has a Highlander with over 300,000 miles in it...still runs great! We love your creative solutions! Give Mom a virtual hug for us!

I use a $90 jumper battery battery I bought from Costco and a $3 USB fan I bought from the dollar store. Get a low volt inverter for the cigarette lighter port of the car and plug it into the lighter port when driving and the jumper battery into the inverter, so that you'd be charging the jumper battery while driving. The jumper battery will also charge from regular household electric, so you can also charge it while visiting your mom. Jumper battery will last several days of charging cell phones, cameras and computers and still provide a lite fan.

I love this car. I have a 2009 Ford Escape. I dropped down the back seats and made a nice little bed in the back. I tinted out all the windows to limo tint. Now when I go on a road trip with my girlfriend we just move our backpacks up to the front seats and head back for some cozy sleep. It’s a new adventure I never imagined car camping is so much fun. Driving listening to music. Great times.

Nice! I guess I have been car camping once albeit reluctantly. We camped a lot when I was growing up and one night our family of 6 ended up spending the night in the station wagon after a storm blew our tent down around us. Not fun! Dad bought a camper eventually but that wasn't always the best port in a storm either! 😂

Sleeping in your car is definitely better than sleeping on the ground. Glad it’s working out so far. I remember that there were times when my family and I were going on long trips that my mom would fix the back of the station wagon so when my parents took turns driving the one not driving could lie down and take a nap. Worked out pretty well.

Hey, you might want to check with a camping store or even the make of your vehicle. They make little tents that connects to your hatch in the back. It extends out the back of your vehicle and gives you a lot more room. Then you could set up a table and do your editing. Maybe run a. Extension cord from your moms house out there. It would be a lot easier for dressing and such. It looks like fun tho! Hope you enjoy it for now.

You'll put the motels out of business ha ha ... I car camped in my small compact car with a hatchback.. was comfy and I taped newspapers inside for "curtains" ... in the am I'd walk to the beach and clean up in the ocean (Highway 1 at Big Sur).. long ago but it was memorable and I was much younger.. TODAY? Maybe not. Your vehicle looks much more luxurious. You might also add a transistor radio and radio surf if not able to sleep .....

If you needed a bigger space you could getting a cargo van( s )are Ford Transit or Ford Transit Connect for your next trips. Also, if you getting the Ford Transit or Ford Transit Connect, you could doing no build build your next vehicle. You could never stopping any motels again because you having a van. The van it's easy to park anywhere in the standard parking lots in the states. The van it's preferred for your trips.

I ... Am ... the defining answer to RV Camping in a pick-up truck. 1976 Ford, F-150, Had a mattress made to fit the interior of the 8' bed of the truck. Used a blue tarp to insulate the metal bed from the mattress. regular sheets for both top and bottom bedding, three large pillows, and a choice of U.S. Army, O.D. green wool blanket, and/or medium weight cotton blanket. Also a sleeping bag go to 60- zero in case of cold weather. Assorted lighting with batteries, propane catalytic heater, custom built-in pantry with ice box. Curtains inside of the topper, home made electrical system for any 120 VAC power needs. and of course, a handgun to greet intruders. Always parked in high traffic area under lights with lots of people and cars passing. Food was stocked before retiring and the TV had an outside antenna. It worked!

Allergies are a bummer, I know. I don't have hay fever, but am allergic to tomatoes. Stinks when you are Italian. Trust me, I eat them. They just give me a headache and act like a sedative. I hope your brother arrives soon so you can get some well-earned respite. Thanks for sharing.
