I believe Mazda's stop start system is one of the better ones. Instead of using the starter motor to re engage the engine, putting strain on the starter motor, it injects petrol into the cylinder that has just finished its compression cycle then ignites it using the spark plug which gets the cylinders going and restarts the engine. Apparently they claim a 0.35 second start up and no extra wear on the starter motor.

@elroy elroy I actually tried it on my car one time (2017 Mercedes E-Klass) just to see if there was any increase in fuel economy. While there was a slight decrease in fuel consumption on my second test (we are talking about such a small number it is not even that relevant) that it did not equate to any real world "savings". I tried to have as close to the same standards as the first test, exactly 1 US gallon of fuel for both tests, same distance, speed, outside temperature, same route, checked all 4 tires pressure before both tests, time spent driving was exactly the same per test, etc etc. I wanted all of the factors to be a fair baseline. I can't even say that the "fuel savings" was even related to the auto start/stop (although I did make an effort to drive conservatively during both tests) because for all I know there could have been slightly less traffic/ fewer red lights on my first route compared to my second route during my test. I had my doubts about auto/start stop prior to doing this test as I turn it off every time I drive my car but for the sake of boredom I decided to spend 30 minuets to find that the only reason auto start/stop exists is so auto manufactures can pass emissions.

My car a 2015 Renault Twingo 90 TCE has start/stop & I like it. I average about 50MPG (UK not USA gallons) & works smoothly. It kicks in when you put the gear stick in neutral & take the foot off the clutch pedal, soon as you press the clutch it fires up straight away. It won't work if the engine is cold & will fire the engine up if battery level is low. You can disable it by a switch on the dashboard. Tried it with start/stop off & it made a difference in economy, I do live in city with a lot of traffic lights & it does benefit me.

I don't know what people are complaining about. I drive a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox and it comes with an Auto Start/Stop technology that is standard. In my opinion, General Motors makes the best auto start/stop technology in the business because when I drive the Equinox around, the technology is surprisingly smooth and seamless. In fact, most of the time I have to shift my focus from the road to instrument cluster to know that the technology has activated itself. I have no problems with it and any kind of improvement in fuel economy is good. In fact, it is very useful during rush hour traffic where fuel economy just plummets from sitting in one place for a long time idling. Yes, it does sometimes produce a different sensation but for the most part it is not bothersome. I think the reason why so many Americans don't like the feature is because they're simply not use to it. Overtime, as the technology improves, Americans will be so used to the system that it will be as commonplace and accepted as airbags.

It would require a more a more robust starter, additional sensors etc and possibly other items depending on the mfg's choices. It would either let the oil drain back or another part to retain oil pressure. All these extra or enhanced components and sensors using up resources plastics, metals petroleum products in their production and research and development. Then figure in the cost both in parts and labor of these additional items and possibly diagnostics to find or confirm the failure. What everyone here fails to realise is that automobile manufacturers KNOW that the stop start system is BS. They also don’t do it to ‘kill your engine to make money in the long run’ either, it’s done purely because governments like the ones in Europe press for manufacturers to produce automobiles that are ‘earth friendly’ and manufacturers have realised that stop start is a great way to make cars look incredibly green on paper! Thus Road Tax being cheaper for the consumers also! It’s a win win.. but everyone knows that nobody uses it in the real world.

I was never made aware of this feature before in any of my vehicles. I have always kept up with all the latest technology. I never noticed any difference or problems with any of my previous cars nor my current one. It’s a 2018. It’s a Turbo 2.0 AWD Lincoln MKZ Reserve. The power that I have in the car pins me in my seat. I was in the wrong lane on a road that was new to me. I had to crossover to get to my exit as fast as possible. As soon as the light turned green I punched it. I crossed 4 lanes & made my exit. I was stunned. I couldn’t see any other exits but the one I had taken. I didn’t want to be lost on Country Roads. Later, I discovered it would have taken me an hour & a half before I could have taken the next exit. My previous Lincoln was a 2011 Lincoln V6. I had no idea a 2.0 would ever have that much power at takeoff. I had 2.0 turbo 4’s before. Nothing like this one. If it has the start/stop feature I’m not aware of it. My car is loaded with Safety Features/Equipment. If I thought that I wouldn’t have made the crossover I would’ve done it. My car would’ve alerted me. It also stops me if traffic stops suddenly. When I’m buying a vehicle I’m overwhelmed by all of the numerous safety features & what’s under the hood. I have paddle shifters. I can change my settings from comfort, sport & I forget the 3rd setting is. I will be sure to check out the Start/Stop feature now. I started working at an Auto Parts Warehouse. 2 to be exact. I love to be educated every chance I get. I wish more experts would discuss Hydroplaning. Thanks you.

I'm willing to bet any fuel cost savings will be eaten up by the cost of one of these "upgraded" parts, come time for replacement, which I guarantee will come. Even if it's built stronger, you're using it way more often than you would normally. The harder you are on something basically multiplies the likelihood of it breaking.

What if your battery is weak and you need a jump you will have to get a jump every time you come to a traffic light, also what happens to the ac if your stuck in heavy traffic on a 90 degree day.

It puts a lot more wear on the engine. Car companies get the benefit of getting to list better mileage while also increasing repair bills and maintenance costs for consumers, many who will go to dealer shops. Win-win for them, lose for us.

I don't care how much fuel economy it gets. I'll never drive a car with stop start technology, at least not one that doesn't let you disable it. Nothing is harder on a car engine than when you first start it up. Imagine starting a car engine several times every time you go somewhere. That's stop start technology.

I am interested in the cost of installing it on an older vehicle. Idling in large city traffic jams is irritating and causes huge smog issues. You can go for miles without even starting a car if you are on a downhill section. A more expensive battery is a minor cost. What is the cost of purchasing and installation? Maybe we can avoid recycling huge numbers of dead electric cars with a small modification to our gasoline cars.

This puts a lot of extra wear and tear on the starter motor and electrical system for sure. I don't feel like it really helps that much in fuel economy to make up for the additional costs in systems needed. On top of that, it becomes less reliable as the vehicle ages. in 10 years these vehicles will probably take a lot longer to start. I know my 2006 takes a little longer now to start up than it did back in 2006. The same is probably going to be true for most newer vehicles in 10 years after parts wear out and the drive train ages. I don't buy vehicles to turn around and sell it or trade it in in 5 years. I hang on to my cars until the wheels pretty much fall off. I still have an 88 Bronco 2 with 574K miles on it, and of course my 2006 Chevy Cobalt with 153k miles on it. We just bought a newer 2017 Chrysler Pacifica but I have my doubts about its longevity. We shall see what maintenance costs are going to be like to keep these vehicles on the road long term. German vehicles are notoriously expensive to maintain well in to their life span.

@@RobertLeBlancPhoto what facts? I can tell you as a someone with an automotive background that starting you engine is more stressful to the engine than just idling. Bad on bearings and crank. Starters wear out quicker doing this. You need different batteries which are generally more expensive to handle the frequent start ups and running other systems while stopped. Water pumps need to be electric due to engine cooling system not working normally. Increased labor prices due to longer repair times. System is just not worth it at the present time. Before someone says well European cars have been doing this for quite some time. As an owner of an European car, at about the 5-6 year mark, they become expensive to maintain and aren't that reliable. If you want to save gas try turning off the AC more often at lower speeds, performing routine maintenance and drive a little less aggressively.

Does auto Start-Stop increase maintenance cost in the long run? To be more specific, does it amplify the wear-and-tear to the engine components?
@SketchRC
8 жыл бұрын
Automakers beef up a lot of components to prepare a car for auto start/stop tech, including the starter motor and starter battery. Since they're larger and more capable, they're smoother and don't jolt the engine as badly as older starter motors do, which means there's less wear and tear on the engine per startup. Since there are more startups, it evens out to about the same amount of wear and tear as a regular, non auto start/stop car.

Cars with Start/Stop must have AGM batteries because the regular acide-lead flooded batteries don't stand such power demand. AGM batteries are more expensive and sensitive to high heat - such as inside engine bay area: when located near the engine, they may last quite shorter than a good acid-lead battery

I don't believe the 3-10 percent savings. I drive on the highway 100 miles a day and the engine some days never turns off. When it does turn off, it's for 10 seconds waiting for a light to change. That is when my 2022 Civic actually turns off. Most the time it has some reason to not turn itself off. It's overall annoying and I hope it doesn't have a hiccup some time I'm pulling into traffic that is coming down the road. Rolling into a semi isn't the way I'd like to go out.
