This was the theme music for a RTE radio show when I was a kid. I never knew the name. One day I came across the sheet music and played it on the whistle. Tear-jerker moment for me. Talk about memories!

It is indeed the Lark in the clear air--i sang it as a choral piece and now sing it occasionally in folk sessions if I feel the mood is right. Sung it once about 12 years ago and had giggling from the guys in the room so i stopped singing only to be told off by my ex--the fiddler. So reluctant unless the atmosphere is right to sing it.

I'm a penny whistler from New England. This tune is a great way to conclude any music jam. I have used it oftentimes. Long live the Gaels, their music, and culture.

Dear thoughts are in my mind And my soul soars enchanted, As I hear the sweet lark sing In the clear air of the day. For a tender beaming smile To my hope has been granted, And tomorrow she will hear All my fond heart has to say. I will tell her of my love And my soul's pure adoration, And I know she will hear my voice And she will not answer me nay. It is this that gives my soul All its joyous elation, As I hear the sweet lark sing In the clear air of the day.

Just discovered this amazing singer (after hearing Ed Sheeren singing The Parting Glass) and this song, as well as Black Is The Colour ,has brought me to tears. I held my dear dad in May as he died and her haunting voice just wells up soo... much emotion in me and is helping me actually give vent to my grief. BEAUTIFUL VOICE x Thank you Cara

The opening verses of the song are celebrated by the philosopher John Cottingham, In Search of the Soul, 2019: "The idea of the soul soaring upwards like the lark in the 'clear air' expresses a peculiar upwelling of joyful exaltation, and it is important for conveying this meaning that the term soul is employed. For what is suggested by putting it in terms of soul, as opposed to, say, the mind or the feelings, is that the event has a spiritual significance for the life of the subject: it involves his whole sense of self, of who he is, of the meaning of his existence."

If you have not heard the recording posted with Aled Jones singing this beautiful song, go to it after you finish this performance. I would highlight the differences in soprano voices, arrangements and production. Also consider 'Skylark' by Mercer/Carmichael in the context of this traditional song.

It's a lovely song, beautifully sung here by Cara Dillon. I'd only add that it was slightly spoiled by pop phrasing, in order to sound "contemporary". A mistake. It's reminiscent of the abuse of the US National Anthem, often mangled by ugly pop ornament at football games.
@philipsnow9401

To compare Cara's version of 'the Lark' to some of the recent manglings of' The Star-Spangled Banner' is fantasy indeed.....( 'The Land of the Free'?! yeah, sure.....not that I have time for our 'British' fantasy of a Nat Ant, either!)
@Syndie702

While you're certainly entitled to your smile, as a musician I have no idea what you mean by "pop phrasing" and don't see any similarities between this rendition and pop renditions of the Star Spangled Banner.
