Wife’s family visiting from Barcelona (we live an hour west of Washington DC…and about 25 miles from Dulles Intl Airport). Our great nephew, asked if I had Licor 43 tonight and I confirmed that I did…still unopened. I purchased it several months ago. He gave me a cocktail recipe I’ve never heard of….(I’m not a bar tender, but I do like to drink, so there are a lot of cocktails I’m not familiar with). The cocktail is simple with only 2 ingredients: Licor 43 and Lemon Fanta on the rocks. I’ve never seen or heard of Lemon Fanta here in the US, so it must be a European variety (just like the Pineapple Fanta I showed them, they’ve never seen in Spain). So, we improvised: Licor 43, lemonade, 7-Up, and a squeeze of fresh lime (didn’t have any lemons on hand). The drink was tart and a bit too sweet for me but it wasn’t made with the correct ingredients and it was rainy night where I live (not hot afternoon). Adding a half to 3/4 ounce of light rum or a good quality vodka…and maybe maybe even a half an ounce of a dry orange liqueur would probably improve the version of the cocktail I made.

Sounds great. I have Licor 43, but no espresso machine. But I have tried Licor 43 in a hot cup of coffee, and it slaps.

What ratios did you use?

@@boozeontherocks 3 or 4 to 1, coffee:licor 43. Basically, a normal sized cup of coffee, 1.5oz licor 43, and a splash of half-and-half.

U can do it with stumptown 2x concentrated cold brew. (2 licor 43 + 3 cold brew - shake the hell out of it so the dilution tones down the sweetness)

Carajillo is a great drink. I really like it. However in Spain the Carajillo is not exclusively reserved to brandy or licor 43. Especially the older generation tend to have it with orujo (usually grapes-based spirit) or with an anis flavoured liqueur. Awesome video. Cheers!

I'm from Spain and I would say it's more common to order it with brandy instead of 43, but I'm not exactly sure. That drink it's losing popularity nowadays since it's considered an "old man" drink. Anyway, that must be the most popular spanish cocktail along with the Sol y Sombra (half and half of anise liqueur and brandy), so Im glad you brought it here!

@Adrian totally agree. Last month I saw the Carajillo in a bar's menu at a hotel in Spain and I was quite surprised. But since it's a part of the Spanish culture, even if getting unpopular I hope it will remain at float. Salud!

I loved your immediate reaction "Whoa, that's a bit sweet. Let's add some more coffee." 1.5 oz is a lot of Licor 43! One argument for shaking is that (depending on the quality of folks' glassware) people are less likely to break their glass by adding the hot espresso to the chilled glass.

Thank you. Your right about the amount of Licor 43. and that's a great tip about shaking and glassware.

I am sorry to have to tell you that if one day you come to Spain and ask for a carajillo in a bar, you should not expect that recipe to be served. That may be the Mexican style, but here it is very different. First of all, Licor 43 is not used (try it with chocolate shake and you will be amazed), but brandy. Anise can also be used. Pour the hot brandy into a cup, add the sugar, stir, and set on fire. It is stirred carefully while it burns so that while part of the alcohol is burned, the sugar caramelizes and then it is extinguished by adding hot black coffee. Ice is never added to it, since it is something that is taken as a digestive (you can also find people who take it for breakfast, but I do not recommend it)

I’m wondering if replacing the espresso with Mr Black and adding in a half ounce of Don Q/Bacardi Silver/White might cut down on the sweetness of this cocktail…it’ll certainly boost the ABV….😂

Guys. Do what you want. But popular science places major sleep issues with drinking caffeine late in the day. Drink this for brunch when you want coffee, and can. Other than that I wouldn’t drink this in the afternoon unless we partying hard and want the energy

@@boozeontherocks It’s a deeper neurological problem with caffeine. It inhibits the receptors that allow for deep sleep. Sleep does a lot for the body which coffee inhibits the more you drink and depending on what time you’re drinking it. Matt Walker is the guy on this particular subject if anyone is interested.
