Thanks Paul glad you got it fixed. My understanding is it’s caused by over tightening of the wheel nuts. My caravan wheel nuts are 120NM. Not psi 😂

Alloy rims and the longer collared wheel nuts can look and feel fine as the wheel doesn't vibrate as the nuts loosen till it snaps the wheel studs a torque wrench is a good investment and its foot pounds not PSI regards Mike

I can recommend John Walker Smash Repairs in Adelaide for repairs to caravans. I've had similar problem with wheel nuts working loose after I changed the wheel and apparently not tightened properly, so studs sheared off.

Having traveled thousands of kilometres on outback roads during your wonderful travels, obviously parts will wear out and things will break. You’re using your equipment. If you sat at home in front of the TV, your caravan would not have lost the wheel. I know which I’d rather do:) As you pointed out, there’s two sides to every story and you have a half glass full attitude. There was a lot of positive energy between you and Peter. That’s what makes a good trip great. I love watching your content. Thanks for sharing your adventures. The good, and the bad.

Have seen this happen before on trucks and trailers. Caused by over torquing the wheel nuts. Don't underestimate the importance of using a torque wrench. A flying wheel can easily cause a fatality.

On average, your level of luckiness is on the high side Paul...on the one hand you lost a wheel, but it didn't hit anything or anyone, then found someone with the bits, skills and tools to fix it. Yay! I was considering getting some spare studs and nuts, but split pin and cover I hadn't considered, so yes I will get all the spares you recommended!

IMO the main reason the studs break is because the wheel nuts have loosened. when the nut is loose which seems to happen a lot on vans and campers, massive loads are put on the stud. instead of the wheel being clamped solidly to the hub it moves up and down as it rotates. It's like bending a piece of wire back and forth! something in the design of the alloy wheels makes them prone to loosening, especially when they have been refitted that's why whenever the wheels have been removed they should be retorqued after 50 - 100km. Therefore I check my nuts often some times i even get my wife to check them for me..

Ensure hub to rim mating surface is totally clean or the dirt/sand grains could shake out and wheel nuts are loose again. Its a common issue with alloy rims and aftermarket thicker steel rims with no 'coining' in the rim to act as a huge spring washer and keep the rim tight on the hub.

I can't believe you didn't notice tha van not level during 9 hours of sitting in it....... Also, I recommend you check the tension on all your other wheel nuts. With a dual axle van I would be carrying at least one spare hub, and a spare stub axle - if they are bolt on, makes replacement easier, but old mate could have welded one on if needed.

They say rattle guns at tyre shops can sometimes contribute to the wheel nuts weakening, or maybe they came a bit loose and broke off. Glad you got it fixed out there Paul, safe travels mate.

Hi Paul. I have found the wheel nuts come loose regularly on the drivers side rear wheel of my Jayco. I always check and retighten every 1000km. I am not sure what causes the nuts to loosen on this wheel only???

Bad luck and good luck the same time Paul, glad to see a major accident didn’t occur from that. I’ve seen professional trades get basic wheel bearing servicing wrong, which is quite a worry. Hard lesson learnt for you, but now you’re better prepared. Thanks for the entertaining vids and safe travels mate. www.csadirect.com.au/pdf/TechInfo/ProductBulletin-144-WheelNut-Torque-Procedures-&-Settings.pdf
