Coach bolt a good idea, could have used that a few times on our trips. Had all the anti flap stuff, and sloped the awning in rain. But in my opinion, if you know theres a strong wind, storm warning coming, roll up the awning. At the end of the day they are sun shades at best, not designed like a building.

Yep a good tip. No point reinforcing and then sitting in bed waiting for a crash! When it's crazy we undo the loop over the barrel and roll it in for the night. Nice and simple and ratchets and bolts are waiting to go again in the morning.

After many years of tying down awnings I now just roll it up and go inside when a storm is coming 😂

With the tilted awning use a bucket or something to collect the water, fresh as.

That is an A1 tip Drew! We caught it once to wash the car when low on water too.

Cool. I’ve been noting your awning bracing in previous KZitem posts for a while. I like your idea of using two straps at either end. I’ve got the metal clips that clip over the barrel. Im I right in saying you guys are into Scouts?

Yup, we're a scouting family. The boys got into it, as we did as kids. So we enrolled as leaders too. Basically camping and adventure in great places. Kinda like now! :)

Cool. Yeah I went through Cubs, Sea Scouts & Venturers many years ago. Priceless experience but sadly my 3 kids missed out because of the decline in interest.

I have been using ratchet straps and coach bolts for a while (started using them in rock hard ground at Mt Panorama) but I use the ratchet straps as a kind of secondary anchor point. I use rope and springs (also fastened with coach bolts) and the ratchet straps are left a bit slack but would stop the awning taking off in higher wind. I can never stop the rattling in the awning though, even in just stiff breezy conditions. How tight do you have your ratchet straps and is the tightness of the ratchet straps putting any stress on other parts of the awning?

never use a ratchet strap, use a long ground steak with a cam buckle strap and a lump hammer to drive in the steak at a 45 angle, coach bolt screws will not hold in a proper storm.
