I spent my final semester in Carbondale during the summer of '87. Was a great way to end my four years there. Spent a lot of time at the American Tap with their $2.00 pitchers that summer.

this was a treat to watch. I grew up in Carbondale from 1973-1991. I graduated high school in 1991. This was right in my prime time in Carbondale and you hit all the highlights. A few places missed were Sidetracks, Pinch Penny, University Mall, Mississippi Flyway just name a few. A lot of memories seen in this video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. This is from the summer before my second year at Southern, and oh, Lord, does this bring back so many memories. Sudsy Dudsy... who'd think that a little hole-in-the-wall laundromat would hit the feels like that? Pags, Gatsby's, the hospital (thank God, I never needed see the inside)... that was a Leap back into the past that makes me smile. Once again from Allen 1, '87-88... thanks.

Thanks for sharing! I was too born in Carbondale, but moved north in 1984-85. Still have family there, but I sure do miss the slower pace of life compared to the hustle and bustle of northern Illinois "move it or lose it attitude". I miss sitting outside of Dairy Queen eating ice cream on a summer night with friends just watching cars drive by...and looking for girls too in our youth.

I attended SIUC from the mid to late 1980's. IMO you could get a good education there, as well as have a good time. The tuition was reasonable too. I knew people that attended supposedly more prestigious schools where they partied just as much, making me think that any college can be a party school if that is what you want. I hear that enrollment is down now, and money is tight. Hope they can turn things around. Thanks for taking me back in time.
@nicholasdean3467

Money isn't really tight anymore. It was during 2016/2017? when Illinois government had a impass for funding for over 2 years. Which halted funding for Illinois public colleges.

Enrollment has went up for this year for the first time since the early 2010s! Lots of good new clubs and bars opening up, but the campus and the people have stayed relatively the same, it has the history and It feels like a second home to me

BTW I was in Carbondale a few years ago. The ABC liquor store is still there but T Birds is gone. The old Hangar 9 collapsed from snow some time ago and is replaced by a new building. Sidetracks was still there, Gatsbys was open minus the billiards side but has closed since. PKs was still PKs. The little fat kid from Kahala gardens now owns the place. The clothes pin laundry mat and arcade is a tourist bureau place.

When I was young and foolish, I thought that Merlin's, the Rat Hole, and Bonaparte's (70's watering holes) were the town's life-blood. By the time I left, I understood that DQ was in fact Carbondale's throbbing heart. Woe to Southern Illinois, and the nation, if it ever goes!
