@@davidknowles2491 While the captain ultimately bears full responsibility and should've seen to it that everything possible was done to prevent this accident from even happening, the officers on watch with him and the helmsman were all just straight garbage. You have the first officer who can't repeat the exact compass coordinates that Schettino gave to the helmsman for some reason, you have the third officer who isn't saying a word about the ship's position every time Schettino gave a new heading for the sail-by salute, and speaking of the helmsman, the guy can't even speak English or Italian. He doesn't know what the hell anyone is saying, and yet for some reason Costa Cruises hired him. Mind you, while I don't and can't completely blame him for everything, I haven't even said anything about Schettino yet. Do I really need to? If I had to pick anyone to blame at the end of the day, I'd probably say Costa themselves. They should've known better than to hire guys who either wouldn't or couldn't do their job properly.

I've pondered the question for a long time now and it's the only thing that makes sense at this point. Ignorance at this repetitive level simply does not exist.

What ultimately doomed the SS Opulence was the failure of its bulkhead watertight doors. As water poured from one compartment into the next it eventually found itself in the still pressurized boiler room 3 which resulted in a pressurized explosion which ruptured the oil tanks below it and ignited the fuel. The resulting secondary explosion and fire destroyed much of remaining bulkheads forward of the ship's engines which caused the center of gravity to make the stricken ocean liner to go vertical before finally filling with water and plunging down into the dark depths. The resulting death toll was catastrophic as the ship's crew had little to no time to mount an evacuation. Those who did survive were those who were on deck at the time of the sinking or those in the stern who managed to escape before its final plunge.
@meme9492
2 жыл бұрын
In the ensuing investigation, they also discovered that basic seamanship was ignored as the Opulence was maneuvered too close to a very erratic underwater shoreline. As there were no crew among the survivors to validate or refute the theory, the Cardboardian Transportation Safety Board, Maritime Division, believes that an underwater outcropping removed significant sections of bottom plating and destroyed the keel structure forward of compartment 5 as Opulence ran it over. This is consistent with several survivor accounts of a moderate lurch and grinding. Compartment 4 contained the main secondary generator (an optional upgrade after the Cardboardtanic incident some years ago). This generator, at full capacity shorted the main generator causing the complete and total failure of the primary generator and ship's electrical grid. Opulence did not have manual failsafes for the watertight doors resulting in flooding of the ship as though there were no bulkheads installed. Opulence currently rests at the bottom of a 2500 foot gorge.
