Hello. I have just now spent 2 hours installing my Packtalk Slim into my Bell Star helmet (found the control interface a bit fiddly to install). Initially I thought I had just replaced my single wired earbud with something that sounded terrible and cost a comparative fortune. Turns out: positioning the JBL speakers so they're actually over your ears turns this setup into a FULL ON "RAVE" inside your helmet! I have to have this below 50% volume (there's a separate music volume slider in the app). The overall sound (including bass) is amazing! I turned the JBL sound mode back to "standard" because the "Bass mode" is genuinely overwhelming. Typing this with the biggest grin on my face (helmet on listening to my tunes) xD. Positioning the speakers over you ears sound obvious - but here's the thing: One automatically Velcro's them into the helmets ear-well (as I did). Stuck my finger into my helmet to feel my ears position in relation to the speaker - it was WAY off.. My speakers are both now mounted partially on the velcro in the ear-well, and pushed up rather snugly into my cheek and jaw padding. Mates! The SOUND! Holy sh*t - going to get into trouble. Legit like I'm wearing my Audiotechnica M50X's inside my lid!

@@sixthisoverdriveThat is mighty unfortunate my man - my condolences. I watched both your review videos, a couple others too, and did a fair amount of my own research/comparisons. Thanks for the review. I am curious about a comparison between the slim and the bold. You’re the only person I’ve seen that uses both. Also Go Canada!!!
@sixthisoverdrive

Jason Barnett I would do the bold. Same basic functionality, but with the bold it’s easier to install and the unit charges without being attached to the helmet. I don’t think that the aerodynamics and wind noise come into play, which would be the only reason to get the slim.

@sixthisoverdrive

Its hard to put on, but once its on properly it isn't moving. The bold is the one I would recomended, as it's an easier install, and you can charge it without the helmet.

How is the cardo slim unit holding up? Any problems with it? I've read some reviews and some are complaining about the charging port breaking off while disconnecting charging cable
@sixthisoverdrive

Rod G I had a buddy with an older model that had that happen, but it wasn’t the slim. I’ve probably charged it 50 times or so. That being said I would recommend the bold any day over the slim.

Since you seem to be an audio engineer type guy, have you thought about simply getting replacement speakers from a high end set of headphones and replacing the JBL's? I don't even own a system yet and I'm already thinking about it...Now, bottom line is that it's not so much about the speaker but it's about wind noise and maybe we should focus on that. Great review, thank you!
@sixthisoverdrive

Yeah, the wind is basically the culprit. There are other channels that have tried buds, noise cancelling or sealed speakers, none of which seemed much better or any better I hope you find a solution.

Was anyone able to install the Cardo Packtalk Slim communicator on the HJC F70 helmet ? What about this special Sena compartment at the rear of the helmet, can Cardo somehow fit over/in it? The helmet is not listed on the Cardo site under helmets comparability, but I wonder if anyone in the real world did it...

So I'm thinking about something like this for my electric scooter. It's got a top speed of 40mph. I'm not sure how much wind noise I should be expecting but my scorpion helmet seems to dampen sound quite well. I do listen to a lot of podcasts and audio-books so I need to be able to make out monologues for narrators. The Amazon kit has the JBL at a decent price. Question is, should I get the slim or the full sized version?

Mike Kojoori full size. You can take it off your helmet to charge it. The slim you can’t.

I always ride with earplugs. I started because my helmet was a really loud cheap helmet, then I bought a Shoei GT Air, which is super silent in comparison. I don't need the earplugs for the wind noice anymore, but I use them anyway to be able to keep my music as loud as possible. Still I wouldn't mind being able to play it even louder. I use a cheap intercom with god awful sound, but since I have earplugs they cut out the ear piercing highs of the crappy speakers. I have been eyeing the Cardo Slim. But ultimately, since I primarily wanna get a louder unit; I don't know if I would get what I was hoping for. I'm able to hear music in 110km/h but speaking with my wife through our intercoms is really hard above 80 km/h

I started using earplugs because I had a cheap noisy helmet, then I bought a gt air because it promised quiet. It wasn’t, at marginaly quieter I still get ear ringing on long fast rides. All helmets are noisy... On a side note, the gt air is a super stable helmet, fist perfectly, looks great and is built well. Glad I got it but it's not quiet.

I’ve had two issues the packtalk bold slim. 1. The controls do not fit well into my helmets Shoei 1200 and HJC. The battery piece stays in but the control portion has to be constantly adjusted. 2) the system is frequently connecting and disconnecting my phone. I use it with both my garmin gps and my iPhone. I get tired of the voice telling me phone 1 disconnected and then 5 seconds later it reconnects.
@sixthisoverdrive

Charlie Barry if I had to do it again, I would buy the bold. I haven’t had the disconnect issues on this but did have those problems with my sena. The difference might be that I haven’t had my gps connected. I also didn’t drop connectivity after I disconnected my garmin .

Just want i have been looking for. A review that a helmet communicator newbie can appreciate. The 70 MPH (very technical wind noise simulator) confirmed what i thought. I thin i will be sticking to my in ear, noise cancelling, ear plugs. Granted no comms but to be honest my 80% use case is music and noise cancelling.

The JBL’s may be a bit better than the others but to me they aren’t anything to write home about. Good video telling it like it is 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 I’ve tried a bunch of speakers and even ones that are way better than JBL don’t amount to much if the speaker placement is off by a few millimeters. Do either of the Packtalk’s have an external jack to accept the speakers of your own choosing? I surely hope so. The next move for me is to get a great pair of custom made in ear monitor speakers made that will produce audiophile sound quality and virtually eliminates the wind noise.

I own a Sena 20S and ride with earplugs. On my ST1300 at 70mph, I couldn't hear anything coming over my Sena. If the JBL speakers fixed that so I could hear the sound, it would be an improvement. I'm just not sure that I want to throw more money at another system that will disappoint.

Any speaker that doesn’t go directly into your ear canal will have a poor sound at 70mph and up speeds. No brand will, expensive or cheap. I think you better off buying a nice quiet helmet rather than trying to find a speaker that sounds good at 70mph. You’ll get a better result that way.
