I think none of these cards are inherently super good or bad, it's all about being critical on how your decks is built, what your strategy is and how your commander plays. For example I play chromatic lantern in my Magnus the Red deck, a two coloured spell slinger deck and it always perform amazing because in this deck being able to have acces to right color pip at any time is SUPER important to be able to chain my spells and storm away or just to play instant speed cantrips, it's never failed me. Good episode guys!

Lightning greaves is played too much but it deserves it. Protection is widely needed and haste. Not just for commanders by the way. Mana dorks. Big creatures. I mean it's the sol ring of equipments. You can move the boots freely. Idk how that card sees less play. It deserves it's place

Worn Powerstone is good in 5+ cost commanders. If you drop it turn 3 on curve you can play your 5 cost commander turn 4 and have mana up for interaction/protection.

Farewell is a card you play when you want to hose every deck and not make any friends. In other words: Hose before Bros.

Awesome episode. I will for sure be trying more impulse draw effects in my mono red decks. I do run chromatic lantern and heralds horn in my sliver deck because its 5 colors and runs 44 slivers so it hits VERY often, though I can see that deck being the outlier 😂.

Greaves is a funny little card. It is the gold standard for what it does, but people do treat what it does as far more broad than how it actually functions in game. If you cannot utilize both halves well, it is going to feel very underwhelming. I play in a superbudget league on the side and it really opened my eyes to just how overrated Greaves is. When you're scraping for every penny you can you start to notice just how little it contributes to the average deck, even as a protection piece. Artifacts get hit incidentally much more than they used to, so it often doesn't offer the consistent security you expect. Farewell is a common example, but I'm seeing symmetrical bounces that hit all nonlands or can select for artifacts in my local metagame. When you have to rebuild and you're holding your rocks, Greaves drops precipitously in value in the scramble to rebuild. I need to get my engines back up and I can't spare the 2 mana. However, when its good its SO good. It can feel like the best card in your deck when it works.

I’m probably not the only one (although I might be), but I play Temple of the False God in my green decks because I love the art from Scourge. Generally, green ramps so fast it pretty quickly becomes just another Ancient Tomb. If I get it in my opening hand it can be rough, but there’s Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth or I A.) free mulligan or B.) I just play around it.

Commander's Sphere was one of the better choices for a while for sort of mindless color fixing and ramp, especially in big mana commanders that are sans green. However there have been so many 3 mana rocks that etb untapped, tap for any color, and have a secondary utility effect printed on them that I have to be down bad for rocks to play sphere. Patriar's Seal, Relic of Legends, Bandit's Haul, Bounty Board, Network Terminal, Patchwork Banner, Progenitor's Icon, Lantern of Revealing... If you need the fixing and the ramp that a 3cmc rock gives you, you've got options now that can offer something extra for your particular deck.

Yeah, I think Sphere has 2 advantages - if your deck can take advantage of artifacts getting sac'd or recur artifacts, and if you need something that costs 8 cents.

I'm sorry but you guys didn't really explain why swiftfoot boots/lightning greaves wouldn't be run. "They take up space in your deck" isn't really a reason, every card takes up space in your deck. If you have a commander that tends to eat removal you are going to want ways to protect it and a lot of commander's tend to be removal magnets.

I could say I’m sorry for correcting you but I’d be lying( like you were when you said it to them)…14 minutes in they go over the situation you would use it-> high priority target; thus, if your commander isn’t -> the greaves aren’t needed. 16:30 in to the bid they go over the haste thing. Idk people just crap on people without cause. This post I’m commenting on.. is an example

Sorry if this didn’t come through very well in the video. We see a lot of people treating Boots and Greaves as auto-includes in commander decks when they shouldn’t. Boots and Greaves are at their best when your commander is a high-priority target for removal and you need the repeatability of equipping, or when giving your commander haste matters. If you don’t need Boots or Greaves for those two reasons, then there are other protection spells that can be much more flexible and effective in your deck. Heroic Intervention protects all your creatures. Feign Death can protect you against a board wipe. Are Boots and Greaves powerful in commander? Absolutely! Do they belong in every commander deck? We don’t think so.

@@danielprivate8038 I mostly play with randoms, I could play the same deck in two games where I go from playing the most threatening commander to the least. Maybe from their point of view they play in pods with friends and everyone knows what everyone else is playing, I mostly play on spell table. Every, and I mean EVERY commander deck I own I have heard people say "that can easily get out of hand, we need to keep him under control" at some point and most of my decks are mid power, I mostly don't play hyper meta commander decks.

"It costs a card slot" is another way of saying "The cost of including a card that doesn't advance your game plan isn't worth omitting a different card that *does* help you." Obviously if you have a Kill on Sight commander and it's critical for your deck to function, they're auto-includes. But a lot of players don't really consider the relative threat level of their commander before windmill slamming Boots in their list. If no one at my table cares enough to Swords my Insect commander, then I've wasted three mana to get zero value. Boots are only good if it *prevents* removal, but until it does exactly that, they're dud cards.

I haven’t been able to watch this just yet (will tonight) but from the comments I can see Greaves is on your list for discussing. I’m going to agree in advance 😂. I run Boots/Greaves in 5 out of 21 commander decks, and much prefer other protection spells. Tbh I also don’t run Sol Ring in every deck (18 out of 21)…Looking forward to watching this!

I just removed two Diamonds in favor of Coalition Relic and Worn Powerstone (both 3 mana rocks). Previously, my curve dipped on 3 with peaks at 2 and 4, and my commander costs 5, so I thought this made sense. But is that thinking flawed, what do you think?

Commander's Sphere is one of the better mana rocks in my Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero deck. The deck is mostly colorless, and wants as many things that sacrifice themselves for value to recur with gerrards ability.

I'll die defending Chromatic Lantern for 4 and 5 color decks. I would rather run IT, than 2 mana rocks that will possibly leave me screwed. Being a turn slower is a small price to pay for mana fixing.

Hey! This is a really good question. Let's do Boros as an example. Where we usually start is: - Sol Ring - Arcane Signet - Talisman of Conviction - Boros Signet - Fellwar Stone - Marble diamond - Fire diamond You could then jump into some of the things we recommended: - Mind Stone - Liquimetal Torque - Ornithopter of Paradise - Planar Atlas - Coldsteel Heart That puts you at 12 with just 1-2 mana "rocks". Plus, you have access to those in every color pair! But, not everything needs to be a rock: Spencer just built a Boros deck and ran things like: - Professional Face-Breaker - Archaeomancer's Map - Cursed Mirror (which is a rock... but it's SO good) Anyway, the point is, you actually have a TON of options that you can switch around depending on the play-pattern of your deck.
@kartenspieler0863
