Great video. Wish I had this information in college. I just graduated and landed job in a municipality's Engineering department. My math minor definitely helped me get the job!

Great advice! Could you entertain another video about options for those of us that may already posses an unrelated or interdisciplinary B.S., and want to get into these fields? Would professional and Master's certifications be a good route, and which would you recommend? For example, my employer offers funding for a "Remote Sensing Technologist" certificate via ASPRS - would this be an industry relevant certification? From this video, I am beginning to understand that one needs to find a focus of interest, particularly those who are mid-career or changing careers. Thanks again for your content.

Cdub I will work on something focused toward those with experience but looking to transition. That's a great idea! I think a master's program can be great if it is going to get you to the job you want. But certificates and experience can show what you know and land you a great job. If you want to go over your specific situation please reach out at katiescheurer.com or LinkedIn.

Is it old-fashioned to join a portfolio in PDF with a cv for a job application? I've just finished my first GIS course and so don't have much to show yet about 3-4 maps max. I dread a bit the time it takes to build a portfolio on line.

Can i get a GIS Tech position with only pipeline construction experience? No degree.
@melr1720

Most GIS Tech jobs require a degree or experience. With your background, if you get at least and AS or certificate in GIS with AutoCAD, you can definitely get hired as Engineering Technician for the city. That’s what I did with my background as a commercial diver

I'm doing Economics and Business Analytics at undergrad and think GIS would be a useful tool to learn for this. Do you think there are roles out there, and would I need a Master's or just a community college certificate to get into them?
@KatieScheurer
4 жыл бұрын
Yes there are roles out there. Look for positions in retail, insurance, or healthcare. They may be advertising as any kind of analytics positions but having geospatial knowledge will give you an added skill to promote yourself.

I will be doing a video on this soon. But get started by looking for positions in the area you would like to work in. Then you can see if you meet most of the requirements and go from there.

Would you consider a GIS certificate alongside a my environmental management/environmental science double major degree enough for GIS work in the public sector or any governmental jobs? or would you recommend pursuing a masters to increase my knowledge?
@KatieScheurer
4 жыл бұрын
Don’t get the masters degree if your goal is to get into a traditional position because you will have enough to apply. If you still want to pursue a masters after you get a position, they may help pay for it. But if you want to land the position in GIS sign up for my newsletter at www.katiescheurer.com so you don’t miss what I have coming up!

Maddy Patil you will need to have experiance to make up for not having a degree. Look for positions in a field you are interested in but are not completly GIS to find something that is entry level.

Gunik Sharma congrats! You can do many things. If you are struggling with a direction I would start by looking for job postings for GIS and geography. See what is interesting to you and apply if you meet the requirements. Getting into the workplace will grow your skills exponentially. Also it will help you figure out what you like.
