I’m 51 year old Japanese woman, working as an English- Japanese interpreter ( now on the freelance basis )in the automobile industry in Japan. This video was very interesting and I could relate to every word Aya-san said. I was impressed by Aya-san’s excellent English proficiency. I wish I could speak English that naturally… With that English, Aya-san can get interpreting jobs in Japan as well easily. ❤

In many cultures, speakers do not close the sentences they start. They start a reasoning and then embed another statement, make a side comment, tell a story, remind something, finish the second left-open sentence and completely forget the very first one. The English language is more square. But in high-context languages, meaning has to be retrieved from a number of loosely connected statements and rephrased into the rational format of the English language. Not to mention the pragmatic meaning of words. Example: Absolutely in Portuguese means "Absolutely not!". The pragmatic meaning overweighs the original meaning.

She's so chill, I'm looking forward to hearing more from her! I've been working as a medical interpreter for some months now and I like her honesty about her career. Her background and situation pushed her forward into this career and she's just embraced it. Everything sounds challenging but doable.

Translating from Japanese into English simultaneously is very hard because the source sentence in Japanese is arranged like this "I a house in Mountain View will buy not".
