Good for you, be sure to have some streamlined J Class 4-8-4’s, K2’s which supplemented the J Class in passenger service, also have the A’s, Y6A,Y6B,Y6C & the Jawn Henry steam turbine in the locomotive fleet.

Alvin Widjaja the Norfolk & Western Railway was the king of steam locomotives. They built & designed their own locomotives I. Their Roanoke, VA shops. My favorite streamlined steam locomotive is the J Class 4-8-4 number 611 which is the most beautiful of all streamlined steam locomotives. A must have & need book is The Last Steam Railroad in America, it’s about the Norfolk & Western and all photos were taken by O.Winston Link. I have that book, it’s also for the steam locomotive fans as well.

actually, near the late 40's they had diesels. and steam was still used. they actually used steam more than the diesels

@@nickel_plate765ftyfilms2 it’s because during World War Two Diesel was expensive because it was for the war effort where as Coal was not. The US Navy modernized all of its Battleships to fuel Oil instead of using Coal.
The saddest thing is that all the locomotives except 2156 was scrapped.

Ya know, the song used here strikes me as having been written by someone who doesn't really know much about the railroad industry and its vocabulary. The word "Cargo" was used in the ocean shipping and air freight industries, not for railroad traffic. On the railroads and in the trucking industry, the things hauled were (and still are) referred to as "Freight." If you wanted to know the status of business in general, you would never ask a railroader or a trucker, "How's Cargo?" You would ask him, "How's Freight?" And his answer would be, "Freight is up" or "Freight is down." Before you romp on me for being a hyper-purist, talk to your neighborhood trucker, or better yet, go read the historical documents from the ICC (Interstate Commmerce Commission,) which regulated all haulage by rail, truck, air and water. The general public is now entirely out-of-touch with everything railroad, and they only know us as the guys who block crossings. So it is only natural that the talking heads on the television screen should refer to railroads as "train companies," and to rail freight as "cargo" and make suchlike blunders. They just don't know any better... How do I know this stuff...? Well, for starters, I worked in the business for 46 years.

It's William Dale Fries, Jr - also known as C.W. McCall. The accompaniment and backup vocals were arranged by a (then) little-known arranger and musician named Louis F Davis Jr - "Chip" Davis to his friends. Chip Davis did the arrangements to another little CW McCall tune called "Convoy" - and he and his dad (Louis Sr.) used the money to start a little recording firm called American Gramaphone...and a musical group called Mannheim Steamroller. How's that for trivia?....
