The old gentlemen on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe joke that today they no longer know which came first: the island or the rum. No wonder: rum still forms the basis for the entire island life and is deeply rooted in the philosophy of life of its inhabitants. Connoisseurs worldwide consider the rum from Guadeloupe to be the best of its kind, as it has nothing to do with the classic rum, which was purely a residual product of sugar production. Guadeloupe's "Rhum Agricole" is distilled from pure, freshly pressed juice from sugar cane, as it was once harvested by the slaves in the fields.
