Rain makes August weather more risky than any other month from January through July. August is part of the annual hurricane season, which officially goes from June 1st to Nov. 30.
Historically, August has an average of three tropical storms. Of those three, two usually develop into hurricanes, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
WETTEST DESTINATIONS
Some destinations normally have a lot of rain, so it’s not a surprise to see them jump in August. They include Costa Rica, Martinque, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Belize.
Other major destinations average four to six inches of rain or more in August, including Bahamas, Barbados, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, San Juan and St. Lucia. These major destinations have a medium to high risk for rain.
DRIEST LOCATIONS
A small number of destinations average four inches of rain or less in August. They include Punta Cana, Antigua, St. Maarten, Montego Bay and St. Thomas.
Aruba and Curacao beat them all with the lowest risk of rain for any major Caribbean destination.
EASTERN TEMPERATURES
In the eastern Caribbean, temperatures for some destinations break into the low 90s Fahrenheit and low 30s Celsius, including the Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands.
All of the other destinations have average daytime temperatures in the upper 80s Fahrenheit.
SOUTHERN TEMPERATURES
The southern and western Caribbean are even hotter. Destinations that reach into the low 90s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius include Aruba, Cancun, Cozumel, Curacao and Grand Cayman.
Keep in mind that these are historical averages and will vary somewhat from year to year.
