They're two different perspectives on the same thing. Jung is concentrating on the integration of the self into the ego (evolving), and Buddha is concentrating on the letting go of what no longer serves you (shedding parts of the ego). I see it as two chefs talking about two different but very necessary ingredients within a recipe. It makes sense to me that you would have to create space in order to integrate.

10 mins and 30 seconds in: The Self isn't the result of individuation. Individuation is the experience of releasing identification with limiting thoughts. Jung was forced to discuss the Self in relative terms because he didn't want to lose his audience, but Jung ultimately understood the Self to be primordial and unchanging in its ultimate state of stillness and simplicity. Jung's Self and the Buddha's Non-Self are the same state or experience of being.

A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to an NDE... Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

the two are not contradictory. Jung, like the buddha, preached bringing subconscious material into awareness in order to achieve a fuller integrated state. The buddha's doctrine of "no self" does not imply such literally, but that what we take to be ourself is based upon an incomplete understanding and misconceptions that become exposed through meditation. As a mathematician I must say that the Buddhist Madhyamaka Middle Way teachings and in particular the concepts of sunyata and dependent arising are more in line with the theories of quantum physics, string theory and mathematics. Buddhism also teaches us about the phallacy of being able to trust our senses. The self is linked intrinsically to consciousness, both of which are subjective and unique to every sentient and conscious being. Causality, perception (of time) , observation of our physical surroundings and science can all be modeled mathematically in such a way that they are in agreement with physical laws and mathematical constraints ( Godel et alii) AND sunyata. The "self" is a subjective term in the semantic realm. The current agitated and hot debate about the hard problem of defining consciousness and thus also self suffers from this mixing of semantics and syntactical form in modeling. Buddhism doesn't do away entirely with the self, but at a closer look with the phallacies of consciousness being able to arrive at truths about our observable universe.

I find this video both helpful and intriguing. It makes much sense to suppose no contradiction between Buddhist and Jungian explanation. That both teachings approach and express the same longing: to find unity and wisdom. Words are tricky and can lead one astray, particularly words like "ego" and "self" which are shorthand forms of expressing areas of vast understanding. They both point to something but do not themselves consist of that something. So it's easy to get confused when Jung and Buddha use the same word like "Self". But if you remove the word and concentrate on the meaning both point to remarkably similar understandings. That is the conclusion that this video is really drawing. Putting this entire question into the pithy opening statement: "the Buddha was Wrong" is simply a teaser. One could equally have used the statement "Buddha and Jung reflect each other" or somesuch.

" Jung had come to India in search of someone, to find out what the East has done to create so many people like Gautam Buddha - not one but hundreds who have gone beyond mind and all its troubles and problems, worries, anxieties. What is the secret? He was going to universities, meeting psychoanalysts, and everywhere he was told, “You are wasting your time. These people are not the right people. These people have gone to the West to learn psychoanalysis and they are teaching psychoanalysis in the universities. You have come to search and seek somebody who is absolutely untouched by the West. And there is a man.” And there was a man - Shri Raman Maharshi. Wherever Jung went - and he was there for three months - everywhere the same name was given to him. “Go to Arunachal in South India and meet this man who is uneducated, who knows nothing of psychoanalysis; he is the man the East has been able to produce. Just go and sit with him and talk with him and listen to him. If you have some questions, ask him.” But you will be surprised: Jung never went there. And later on, feeling that he will be criticized, Jung wrote, “I consideredly did not go to Raman Maharshi because the East has its own way, the West has its own way, and they should not be mixed” - just to protect himself from criticism. Then why did he go to India at all? He was told again and again to go to a man who was available, which is rare, and he did not go there, although he went up to Madras, from where it was only a two hour journey to Arunachal! Jung did not go to the man, whom just by meeting he would have seen how a clear man is, how a man is who has cleaned his mind completely - his eyes, his gestures, his words, his authority. He does not quote scriptures, he knows himself. Jung did not go there, and he himself felt guilty. To defend himself he started writing that the East and the West have different ways. This is nonsense, because man - whether in the East or in the West - is the same. And it is strange that he was teaching Eastern students Western psychology. He should have refused because this is mixing East and West. If he was really honest then he should have said, “You go back to the East.” He was teaching Eastern students Western psychology, but he was not ready to go to an Eastern meditator, just to meet him. What is the fear? The fear is that Jung is as normal a person as you are - just knowledgeable. He has gathered from books, but he has no authentic experience of his own. Western psychoanalysis is just a business. It is cheating people. It is simply exploiting people without any help, and because there is no other alternative people have to go to it. The psychoanalysts themselves go to other psychoanalysts. And psychoanalysts go mad more than any other profession! They commit suicide more than any other profession; they are more perverted in every way than any other profession."

Many sweeping and misleading generalities in this highly dichotomous comment, but there is a germ of truth as well. Put simply, Jhng was afraid of losing his own path if he allowed himself to sink too deeply into the Eastern mindset. We now have more decades of cultural mixing, better translations, and easier access to far away perspectives. Kn these times, only those who seek metaphysical certainties need to fear the influence of new ideas.

Buddha especially teaches the concept of non-self to monks who have pledged to free themselves from the cycle of rebirth and death (Lokuttaradaya). Buddha explains that if one performs actions with a sense of ego or self, it will result in continuing the cycle of birth and death. In Buddhism, the concept of anatta (non-self) is central to the Buddha's teachings, especially regarding liberation from samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Here’s a deeper explanation: Non-Self (Anatta) Buddha taught that what we consider as “self” is an illusion. This "self" is not permanent, but rather an ever-changing collection of physical and mental phenomena. These components are the five aggregates (skandhas): form, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Clinging to these aggregates as "self" creates attachment, which leads to suffering and binds one to the cycle of rebirth (samsara). Pledge of Monks (Lokuttaradaya) Monks who aim to achieve nibbana (liberation) strive to go beyond the ordinary world of desire and attachment. The term Lokuttaradaya (translated as "supreme transcendence") reflects this goal of freeing themselves from worldly existence and the cycle of birth and death. Their practice centers on eradicating attachment to the notion of self. The Role of Ego and Self Buddha taught that actions performed with a sense of ego-clinging to the idea of "I" or "mine"-produce kamma (karma), the moral law of cause and effect. Karmic actions driven by ego lead to future rebirths because they keep one trapped in the illusion of self and desire. As long as there’s attachment to this false sense of identity, one will continue to be reborn. In contrast, actions performed without attachment or the sense of self are considered "selfless" and don't create karma that results in future rebirth. This detachment leads one toward enlightenment (nibbana), the cessation of the cycle of birth and death. In Summary: Anatta (non-self) means there’s no permanent, unchanging self. Actions driven by ego/self create karma and lead to rebirth. Monks who pledge to transcend (Lokuttaradaya) focus on eliminating the attachment to self to escape samsara. When attachment and ignorance are uprooted, one reaches nibbana, where the cycle of birth and death ceases.

Moderns have no idea what the Buddha meant by anātman. It refers to the illusory body consisting of five aggregates namely appearance (rūpa), sensation, ideation, choice, and bifurcated consciousness (vijnana). Even in plain Sanskrit anātman means, 1. Destitute of spirit or mind. 2. Not spiritual, corporeal. 3. Not self, another, something different from आत्मन् (spirit or soul) i.e. the perishable body. Putting it simply, the Buddha is trying to tell people that the carnal body they cling to has no soul. Ātman is transcendent.

For Buddhists, Zen Buddhists, it's not that the self doesn't exist, it's just that the self is more than just the ego, the me, which is seen as a construct, a representation created by the mind, if I recall correctly, Dogen said the true self, the true body is the entire universe.

Carl Jung was a Analytical psychologist who wrote a few books a basic ant in the great scheme of things, where as the Buddha was an enlightened being who after his death left an unlimited and to this date an undying religion or philosophy that has spread across continents and generations going back 2700 years becoming one of the worlds largest religions. Whole nations followed his teachings and it still grows. In my mind Jung was no more than a fleeting leaf dying in the autumn of his own dreams. The Buddha in comparison is a burning star giving light and enlightenment to all that follow.

Jung was an Opium addict which is why dreams were really important to Jung, Jung thought that dreams expressed an aspect of reality whereas the Buddha said that what we hold to be real is just an illusion like a dream, a magic show, or a movie. The teachings of the five aggregates point to the fact that there's no independent, ongoing, unitary self. The Buddha says that the apparent reality is an illusion like a dream and that a dream is double delusion.

Both Buddha and Jung made metaphysical claims, albeit tacitly. Buddha's impulse towards relational metaphysics was a way to identify or equate subjectless-objectivity and objectless-subjectivity. Both emanates from No-Thing, a cosmos that is causally contained and immanent. Jung frequently ventured into transcendent ideas of a God and provided a framework to justify his Christian impulses and bourgeois-individualistic calculus typical of "the West". Buddha became a man who changed the course of human history precisely because his motivations were anti-individualistic. Jung became a cult-figure because of a culture that desperately wants the individual to endure and survive death in some form, like the Christ.

Buddha retreated in the mountains and his fans followed him so he had to tell them to believe in his teachings to not believe in him. Simple. Also, if buddhists claim that it’s not a religion, they have no room then speaking on spirituality. If they pray, “meditate” is the codeword, and believe in demons or spirits or any type of spirituality, it’s a religion that’s claiming falsehoods of not being a religion. Just have accountability when wrong and learn to have healthy balance in life, no religion needed.

Jung got it wrong. Jung's 'Self' or'ego' are artifacts of the mind which provide a unique identity not only for self reflection but also for outward projection when interacting with others. The Buddha saw through this charade and pointed out that the Self is mutable over time, constantly evolving according to new experiences and worldly understanding. The Buddha's fundamental insight was the universal principle of impermanence, which impinges greatly on the human condition. We long for stability and security, but life is not like that, because impermanence is a fundamental phenomenon. We delude ourselves when we assume our Self is unchanging. The Self of an infant is clearly vastly different to the Self of a senior citizen. It is the central human issue of not being able to achieve lasting security, happiness, etc that the human condition is seen as a problem; 'unsatisfactory' as the Buddha describes it. The whole gist of the Buddha's teaching was about coming to terms with impermanence through wise reflection.

Jung was obsessed with the racial archetypes. He spoke about the western psyche as opposed to the asian psyche, and believed that westerners could harm themselves by adopting asian practices that were not in alignment with the western psyche. In recent times there has been discussion in Buddhism about the difference between the Dharma and the cultures that have adapted it. Most teachers usually point out that although the cultures that hold the Dharma are to be respected, they are not the same as the Dharma. Therefore it is possible to practice the Dharma without trying to change your culture, or adopting another culture. Jung would go beyond that and say that asian practices like Buddhism are harmful to the western psyche because they can cause mental illness or mental imbalance in europeans. He provided examples of people who became mentally unbalanced after taking up asian practices, in one book he pointed out his friend who had translated the I Ching and had taken up Taoism, and had a mental break down.

The psychologist has picked up only one section of Budha's idea about self. He refers to ego and self with his understanding of psychology. And what the psychologist is referring to here is the most debated issue in four different Buddhist schools. And this is the basic element where different Buddhist classes have debated for thousands of years. There are two different self explained in Buddhist text. The animate and inanimate self. When the conception, emotion and cognition comes in. That is an inanimate self. Non self doesn't imply exclusively for mind and consciousness. It implies to entire phenomenon of entity. Both animated and inanimate.

So, comparison between people who are almost perfect, but still have bugs is foolish. Remember, Jesus fe expressed his doubt at the very last moment of his life. It was not God who forsake him, it was his believe that failed eventually. The Buddha claim no God, It is absurd to think the universe was created. Time create everything and solve everything. Time created our Self, and Time will solve it. The existence of the Self is only a flashing transition from the illusion past to the illusion future. That’s why buddhism indoctrinate little monks with the thought that ego is an non existing illusion. It’s a perfect start for reaching a high level in insights, in which the Buddha was not wrong.

I think that to say that the Buddha didn't believe in a self is wrong. I think that idea just arises from a confusion over the definition of self. If the Buddha did not believe in self, then who or what was experiencing Liberation/Nirvana? I think we need to go back and look again at definitions. Jung was contemporary to it is easier to understand what his terms mean. But Buddha used terms that are not familiar to us and which much more easily lost in translation.

Buddha rejects the self and the soul as well - he thinks we are particles of consciousness who travel from one incarnation to another ! As such we evolve and progress ... That' s the spirit perspective too : Naître, mourir, renaître encore et progresser sans cesse, telle est la Loi ! (Allan Kardec) The Stoïcs called this "Demon of the self" : - as man can see on the tombstone of Jim Morrison, in Paris ...: ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ. The Greeks called the happy man ευδαίμονα ( wenn his self - demon was good) and the unhappy man κακοδαίμονα (wenn his self - demon was bad) : both cases were the consequence of the activity of each "particle of consciousness" in his previous incarnations ... (I am Greek myself and tried very hard, in the past, to realise what was the true meaning of Spiritus Familiaris ! At the end i understood that this "familiar spirit" was not an angel of God but what we called "Demon of the self" and the Egyptians called "Ba" !).

@@mayawisdom888 after you verify things, can you please pin my original comment above? People need to know how much was taken from India without proper credits. There are so many stuff like this. Even a scholar with a very strong following here in KZitem (Let's Talk Religion is the name of his channel) is doing the same thing with Yoga. That KZitemr Filip posed questions like "who has authority over yoga and who does is belong" on his intro video on Yoga then suddenly made a follow up video on it about "Islamic Yoga". He even discussed breathing techniques on Islamic Yoga when in original video about Yoga from India, he didn't even mention details like that. Not even a single mention of Shiva and or the terms citta, manas, ahankar which are crucial in understanding how the mind is seen in Yoga. It's ridiculous cuz he is supposed to be a scholar on comparative religion and he is subtly brainwashing people into thinking that the Islams also have authority over Yoga.. I am not a Hindu but I hate seeing knowledge from great philosophical schools not being revered. It's not right and people have to be aware it's happening cuz the integrity of the wisdom passed down by the great sages must be protected for the future generations.

Putting Jung and the Buddha on the same plane is a blatant mistake. You cannot compare Jung to the Buddha however much you adore him in your school of thinking. Jung's psychology is good for organising one's earthly existence whereas the Buddha's discovery is to stop existence which is the origin of all forms of suffering.

First I wish to thank you for your tolerance of the objection I made in good faith. I am not opposed to Jung. I respect him in matters of behavioural psychology. But the domain he concentrates on is totally different from that the Buddha did. While Jung addresses a supreme level of the mundane, the Buddha, a supreme level of the supermundane. While surveying the areas subject areas either of them concentrates on, we perceive that Jung's domain does not embrace what goes on with the samsara, the repetitive cycle of birth, existence, and death, in which all living beings are meant to suffer for millions of years for no reason. Here, rebirth appears as part of the mechanism in which all beings are tortured for their attachment to existence. The four noble truths in Buddhism - DUKKHA - suffering, SAMUDAYA - the cause of suffering, NIRODHA - the cessation of suffering, and MAGGA - the path to the cessation of suffering. The minute complications Jung identifies in the human mind as a scientist do not address fully, the massive processes of existence all beings are caught in due to their intellectual, moral, and spiritual limitations that the Buddha identified. So, Jungian psychology and Buddhism are two different pursuits although there are things to benefit from each while pursuing the other. All the best!

Ego (false self) and self (true self) are often used interchangeably, which is where the confusion arises. By 'non-self,' the Buddha was referring to the false self, or the ego.

I have always been almost obsessively drawn to psychology, philosophy, and religion. Whenever I'd read about it, my intuition always pushed me to find flaws in it, and try to build theories around the flaws. At 46, I still will not subscribe to any specific religion because I still find flaws. What I can do is live by the models and parts that resonate with me. Around my neck right now, I have a Christian cross, the Tree of Life, and a death skull made out of Yooperlite (If you're going to honor the life, you should honor the death), and I'm studying Jungian theory. I'm sure many would say I'm non-committal and that may be so 😂. For so long, we've had religions which we pass down to our families, telling them this is what they should worship, and these are the values they should live by. I feel like there should be more individual freedom involved in it. A "choose your own adventure" in finding your own values. My parents were 16 when they had me, I was never taught any strict morals, which made me who I am. The Universe taught me, through lessons and experiences, and how those experiences made me feel inside. I've always had a sense of right and wrong as far as I can remember but if I strayed, I'd learn the hard way. I first read the Bible on my own and there was so much I didn't agree with, but the archetype of Jesus really resonated with me. Do unto others, was how I was already living my life. Then it just branched out from there. I think that's how you acknowledge and get around the biases, you offer the knowledge, and it becomes a personal choice. If you lead by example and people respect and resonate with the message, they'll come along to it, when they're ready.

Buddhism is a bootcamp for the mind in my opinion, at least in the beginning. It reaches far beyond that, but its goal is to lead you to an experience. In this way it is more then a philosophy. IF you follow the path the Buddha has given to us, you will see for yourself. That is his promise. I am far from that, but if I have to choose from any philosophy or the buddhist path, I don't have to think about it. As the Buddha said - it is a path that is wholesome in the beginning, in the middle and at the end. Also I don't see, where Jung and Buddha collide? Jung explains, how the mind works. The Buddha explains, why we suffer and how to end it.

Buddha's teaching encompasses multiple intelligence, and intellectuality is just a limited framework. The experience of "Self" is an operational framework of everyday life, and gets naturally dissolved when one's experience gets connected through multiple channels of experience in terms of existence body, in terms of framework of sensation, in terms of framework of mind, and in terms of framework of the nature of events. Some stuff seems contradictory because the very state of framework we assigned as first hand is termed contradictory. That's why Buddha's teaching always emphasize on what's happening outside (what is being measured) only in reference to how it is interacting inside (what is the tool and measuring unit). When they are cinsidered together, every contradiction dissolves with Wisdom as background.

How can Carl Jung who was a psychoanalyst and a monotheist have the unmitigated gall to comment on the Buddha, when he was only a shrink ? He should get his own psychoanalysis to be accurate, before he throws stones at the moon. He certainly would never have said anything derogatory about the Buddha. He may have spoken about other religions but definitely not about the Buddha. He knew nothing about the Buddha Doctrine, because the Doctrine was way above him. The Doctrine was mainly at a “ sub-atomic level” and Quantum physics, when explaining the concept of Anicca, Dukkha, Anatta, Yamakaya and Akaliko. These aspects were well above the monotheistic theories believed by the likes of Jung. Even Einstein did not fully understand the concept that “ we and the surroundings are actually an illusion and not reality. It was Neils Bohr who had to explain to Einstein that the surroundings in fact 1:15 did not represent reality.

Jung's idea of "self" is limited to the perspective of the intellect focusing on name and form. Buddhism teaches this temporal "self" is a limited perspective and falsehood as it's incomplete. We have an eternal formless "self" ...the soul which is the true "self". It was before we were born and is after we die.

Listen to this content, again and again. A well written article, arranged the facts and findings in a sequential order, which will be a Bridge to cross the vast sea of "delusion" or "Illusion" which surrounds us to the "Island of Understanding" where we will be free from all interactions and resulted suffering, which we today describe as happy and sad experiences. A job Well Done! From this narration, it appears that Jung has done a lot by trying to understand the existence of "self" and the interaction it has with the outside conscious beings and unconscious physical objects, which is complex. Buddha has also done a lot to separate the "Self" centered observing of the world with the "non-self" approach to understand the impermanence which is the base of this world. The final state Buddha suggested is to train the consciousness to understand the reality composed of a lot of ingredients which is again not a "self" find anywhere. Are they different perspectives? One may run away with the impression that Jung's definition is differ from the Buddha's elaboration on understanding the world as it is. As far as I (mu self) understand Jung tried to analyse the Self and its interactions and to measure consciousness from observations made by five senses (six senses including the Mind) theoretically using scientific postulates. In contrast, the Buddha made the understanding of "Self" and its interactions with others (including his own self) through self realization (through the Mind). Anyway, it was a great piece of fact presentation where the flow is well maintained and finally one (self) viewing this video could consciously arrive at a decision that Jung, after around 2500 years has tried to getting closer to an understanding of the "world" ( which Buddha said it is within yourself), by an extended scientific approach might have gone somewhere there but not exactly to the point of realization of "self" as taught by Buddha. For sure Jung must have studied the core of the Buddhist way of practically realizing the operation of "self" in this world, without referring to the Mind which is so subtle and cannot be seen but the main reason of illusion and also for the "self-realization". I (myself) personally feel the Jung must have realized the truth even at the last moment of his life, resulting he himself not attached to a next birth after death. Sorry, I am not an expert but was prompted by this presentation and hence wrote this little. Let there be Peace in Mind! Let there be Wisdom to understand Mind! Let there be deep consciousness while reading this valuable and superbly done article.

Crazy comparison! Perhaps people fail to see that the Buddha was concerned with the inner journey. The Buddha was concerned with the broader aspect of human suffering and inner struggles related to everything that Jung discussed and more. Jung's terminology is different and compatible with Western developments in the field. Hence, it is not logical to place Jung and Buddha on the same pedestal. Jung perhaps picked up from Buddhism and put some of its aspects with different jargon. It's a bit of plagiarism with a twist.

Thank you for an excellent video. It may be helpful to keep in mind that the Buddha's non-self concept does not deny the self. What is denied is a separate, permanent and non changing self. A direct understanding of the Non-Self and by extension Emptiness concepts can be profound.

Trying to comprehend or interpret the 'no-self' by Buddha, which is thought to be concept mistakenly, through the intrinsic limitation of the intellectual perception, is like trying to define the Sun by a born blind. Mind requires reference point to make sense of any concept. How mind can comprehend something which is indicative of a realisation where mind and all the reference points get dissolved in pure but paradoxical consciousness.

I think both worked as doctors, or healers. Neither was trying to found a religion, but those who seek comforting stories will turn anything into a religion. The common “eternalist error” of believing that some fixed chunk of yourself can reincarnate or live in Heaven forever is an obvious example of Buddhist “clinging” and Western wishful thinking.

Life is not reducible without introducing error. Projection seems to be the default when faced with unknowns that create anxiety. To be aware of my limits, of the contingency of being as well as its necessity - simple by the fact that I am - is utile and opens doors into spaces that are intriguing, sometimes perplexing, and definitely not boring. So, the "i" is a construct - probably an epiphenomena laying on top of the physical substrate. The subjective centre nevertheless feels real and outside of dreams and other non-conscious states has persistence. Being aware that "i" is not real feels threatening to the ego which can run away in a whirl and eat itself like Ouroboros. This is pretty much the definition of a hell state, as the "i" in terror tries to avoid the knowledge that it is a fiction. On the other side, an ego-less state provides awareness of how nothing is in fact separate from the universe. Each is - in a manner of speaking - a mode or nodal point whereby the universe experiences itself. This complexity is expansive and some forms of music induce this awareness,. (In particular, I am thinking of the last movements of Mahler's 2nd and 3rd symphonies where in the 2nd one whirls upwards towards an infinity framed within Mahler's take on Christianity, and in the last movement of the 3rd it is the collapse of duality after cycles of expansion and collapse. Both provide an ecstatic completion, with the second being expansive, and the 3rd being a profound silence. They are in a sense opposite and completely complementary - much like Jung and Buddha.) The narrator / creator of this video is well aware of how dangerous our species has become with the fragmentation and alienation of being human and its violent projections upon the world in the service of the "i". We are in profoundly dangerous times, and it is far from certain that we will pass through this great filter to grow out and up from our adolescence. We have the problems that the power of our sociability and neo-cortex together enables us to be very effective at extending our power. It is as though we have been granted a djinni's wish, and as all such tales go, the wishmaker experiences terrible unexpected consequences. We use science and create technologies, and we keep generating bigger and more existentially dangerous affects upon the biosphere. A sixth mass extinction is in the midst of occurring at our own hands because we have not taken the time to address the problems of being human, and grappled with that enough, and the problem is that power grows exponentially over time and our brains change / evolve at a far slower rate. It appears that we are approaching an unavoidable centre that has the mass of a singularity that keeps drawing us in ... faster and faster. (Oh, that we would slow down, drop back, and stop being addicted to the lust for power. Hubris breeds Nemesis, and that Nemesis is looking a lot like Shelley's Ozmandias or Yeats' Second Coming.)

Very insightful... and helpful hints for not getting stuck in terminology, nor attached to any one doctrine. Even in ordinary conversations, the communication can break down when we fail to recognize the variety of perspectives which can be intended and hinted at by a word or term. Speaking the same language, using the same terms (but with different senses) doesn't necessarily mean a shared perspective and is thus much tedious and useless controversy can ensue, basically misunderstandings... What matters is a focus, on which aspect of reality we're addressing. If we don't hold onto doctrinal terms too rigidly, then different perspectives on experience can become mutually compatible facets and enriching insights.

The Buddha dealt with the conscious mind and how to live from that perspective. He did not go into the subconscious or superconscious minds so much; although being enlightened he certainly would have been aware of them. Carl Jung, in contrast to Freud, went into the subconscious mind; literally, going into his own subconscious mind, he dealt with the dark side that could lead to loss of ego; being unmoored; and even insanity. Jung did not consider the superconscious mind except to mention the transcendent function It appears we have three forms of consciousness; Superconsciousness; Consciousness; and SubConsciousness. Carl Jung would never have said the Buddha was wrong. Being enlightened how could the Buddha be wrong; that concept is ridiculous. Carl Jung once had the chance to meet a Yogi. He passed on the opportunity as he thought it would unsettle him too much. It would not have as Yoga although seeking the light acknowledges all the states of human consciousness: Subconscious; Conscious; Superconscious.

No one’s. There is no one to have it. It is merely an arising in consciousness, with no true “I” to observe it. There is merely a flow of arising and passing phenomena in awareness.

@@willmosse3684 so, there is no illusion ...
@willmosse3684
25 күн бұрын
@@bronsonmcnulty1110 Ha! Well, in a way I guess. I am still coming to terms with the concept of Shunyata, or Emptiness, myself. Ultimately, nothing has any solid reality, so even the concept of illusion is illusory. But, taking that aside, we can say that there is an illusion of self, but there is no being that is actually having the illusion. There is perception without a perceiver. In English, we form verbs such that there is a subject who is carrying out the action of the verb: ‘I’ am seeing this, ‘you’ are seeing that. But what the Buddha is saying, is that the subject is illusory. There is only seeing, there is no subject of the experience, no subject that is doing the seeing. One way of thinking about it is that there is a field of consciousness, and then things arising and passing away in that field of consciousness. But there is no central “you” in that field of consciousness. There is not a “you” here observing or interacting with “that” there. So, what we would normally experience as something like “I am seeing the ice cream truck so I will walk over there and get an ice cream, I am now walking there” is actually just an open field of awareness, an ice cream truck arises in that field of awareness, then a desire for ice cream arises in awareness, then the contents of the field of consciousness shifts until the ice cream truck is bigger and more central (this is what you think of in mundane terms as you walking to the ice cream van), then the form of a person hands out the form of an ice cream, and a volition to receive the ice cream arises, and the form of a hand arises and takes the ice cream from the person and moves it, and then a sense of coldness and sweetness arises (you eating the ice cream), etc.” This is of course only a fraction of all the things that are arising and passing away in the field of consciousness all the time - the feelings of pressure that we identify as footsteps for example. So this is all arising and passing away, but to enable us to function in the world, it is necessary to tie it all together into what we perceive as a self. “I will go over there and I will get an ice cream.” But that is only an illusion, and it is believing that illusion to be real that causes psychological suffering, because we think “I want this, I don’t want that”, and this causes us stress. So when we realise there is no self in an ultimate sense (though there is in a pragmatic day to day sense), then we realise that “I” can’t be stressed out about what “I” do or don’t have or want, because there is no I to have it anyway. And this is how we escape mental suffering in this world (and in classical Buddhism, how we escape endless rebirth in a physical body, because it is physical cravings that cause this physical rebirth - though I personally don’t subscribe to this part of it). I probably didn’t explain that very well 😂. It’s hard to convey. But with meditative practice, you can really begin to see profound truth of this. And it really does help to dissolve stress and anxiety etc. Though it takes a lot of work, and if you are very stressed or anxious or depressed or whatever, it becomes harder, because in those states you are more deeply entwined in the illusion (or I guess I should say, when those states arise the entwining of the illusion grows stronger…).

@@bronsonmcnulty1110 Ah man, I just spend ages writing a long nuanced reply to your post, and then KZitem deleted it… I will write a much shorter version. There is an illusion, but there is no person having the illusion. It arises in conscious experience, but there is no “you” at the centre having that experience. That “you” at the centre is the illusion. There is just a wide field of consciousness, and things arising and passing away in that field, including the illusion of self (though ultimately, everything is empty of solid existence, including the concept of illusion, so in that sense, no, there is no illusion either - that also is only illusory).

Bravo, very well done (other than the click-bait/misguiding title and somewhat irritating/distracting background music)! Having been a lifelong student of both Buddha and Jung (45+ years at this point) I find your discussion relevant (to us as humans regardless of who we follow) as well as insightful and beautifully presented. What we're left with - both in this video and our individual lives - is something ineffable and thus mysterious (unfolding/expanding/clarifying) despite what we may think or want. Jung called this the endless process of Individuation and as such it's universal and inescapable. In Buddhism that idea eventually got expressed as our "Buddha Nature" - or true nature; an always pure presence, changeless, and uncorruptible. What I'm left with here is the wonderful appreciation that neither (Buddha or Jung) are the Masters and both just the messengers.
