What a classy gesture by Stan to George. Carl always seemed like the most normal of the Sun Rockabilly icons - a humble man who appreciated his fans and friends. And what a great special the Carl Perkins & Friends TV show was. A real tribute to the man and his music.

Hi Spa Guy, I really loved both parts of this report with Stan Perkins, apart from me being an Elvis fan I like the Beatles too and George Harrison was never really given any credit for his song writing skills until after the Beatles split up in 1970. There are some great songs worth checking out on the 33 and 1/3 album, and Cloud 9 albums/CD's if you get a chance. I love the attention to detail in your videos, thank you again for all that you do, without you these stories would never see the light of day and we as fans would never know of there existence.

Oh wow, Stan really can tell some stories, how did you get to know him? That peavey story is awesome, I mean who in the world could've given George something that mean so much to him, and the fact that the guitar was already in the Hof in 98 or 99, when the show was in 85 tells everything about how special that show is to not only the Beatles lore, but the Perkins lore, and how the idols wall is broken, it's like the third wall in a way, when Stan says full circle, it's the wall between a fan and a star that you realize they are just a fan too of another star, vans so on, and so on. What a magical story, and wonderful vid

Hey, Spa Guy. I want you to do a favor for me, good buddy.. I want you to tell your friend, Stan, his father had no reason to feel left out by not being included in the Wilbury's. Here's the story: The Wilbury's started out as sessions between Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. Jeff was producing Roy. It was just those two. The band wasn't pre-meditated and it was never George Harrison's band. George just showed up at the sessions between Jeff and Roy, and he stayed. Simple as that. Stan's father wasn't invited because they were Roy Orbison sessions. Jeff Lynne was working exclusively with Roy. Carl wasn't called for the same reason Bruce Springsteen wasn't called, or John Fogarty. Little Richard wasn't called. Steve Cropper wasn't called. Dion wasn't called. Johnny Rivers wasn't called. Etc...

I’m not doubting that the Beatles were huge Carl Perkins fans or were members of the fan club... but unfortunately those signatures were not signed by the Beatles themselves. They were likely signed by a secretary or someone else who worked for them. The signatures bear little resemblance to the real thing. I’m not trying to be a downer, but it’s important to realize they were moving constantly during the touring years that they were nearly impossible to track down, so a lot of signatures that went out were signed on their behalf by others. There are also documented cases where one Beatles would sign for all four. The good news is that the signed photo shown in the previous video does appear to be authentic from what little is visible of the signatures.

@@SpaGuy I had watched the video several times to try to get the story straight. Stan tells the story of the Beatles meeting Carl during his tour of England, when they threw the party for him. Stan (at 1:03 in the video) then says "Later that year there was a fan club started in England by two gentleman..." So that puts the creation of the fan club at a time when Carl apparently wasn't in England. Later in the video you asked (at 2:50) "What was the time frame of this, when did they join this?" But Stan apparently misunderstood your question and talked about the time frame of when the Beatles met Carl, not when the fan club was started. Memories of events like these are easily jumbled over the years. For example, Carl (as told through Stan) said he was present at the session for the recording of Matchbox, Honey Don't, and Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby. Carl's tour of England ran from May 8 to May 31. Matchbox was recorded on June 1, which appears to line up with Carl's telling of the story, as there is evidence from other sources that Carl was in the studio that day. But Honey Don't and Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby were recorded on October 26 and October 18, respectively. That puts the three songs at three different recording sessions. I don't think Carl or Stan were trying to make up any stories or present any falsehoods, but I think memories of certain specifics get a little fuzzy after several decades. (It's possible that Carl and the Beatles jammed those other two songs in the studio, but they weren't recorded on that day.) I truly wanted those autographs to be the real deal, but the physical evidence shows they bear no resemblance to the real thing. And ultimately, research must rest upon physical evidence whenever possible, as memories can (and do) change over time, especially when they are second-hand memories told through someone else... in this case, Carl's memories told through Stan. The one undeniable fact that we should come away with is that the Beatles were huge fans of Carl Perkins. They recorded six of his songs, three songs for record and three more songs for BBC radio sessions. The only person they covered more was Chuck Berry, who they covered nine times total. That's saying something!

@mjanovec Funny you should have pointed that out, as the same conclusions were drawn by me about the signatures upon viewing the Beatles photo and the fan club display; all said, you did a very sensitive, thorough job clarifying this to SpaGuy, who I hope, now fully-understands that you are merely pointing out an apparent fact to those who are familiar with authentic Beatles signatures, and not disrespecting or disputing Stan’s integrity...
