I was just learning guitar in 1957 and now after all these years I can tell the world that Carl Perkins was one of the finest guitarists during that era in rock-a-billy music. To this day guitarists can listen and learn his innovative style and licks thanks to you tube. I still marvel at his skills.

If I'm not mistaken, Harrison's version of Your True Love at Carl Perkins 1998 funeral gathering was the last time he played before the public. So appropriate, if so. I can see George listening to this as a 14 year old and it lighting a fire that led to his brilliant career. Then George paying his respects and thanking Carl for his music.

Carl was in a severe car crash just before he was scheduled to make his big appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Both Carl and his brother were badly injured, and it was several weeks before they could play again. Their first show turned out to be the Perry Como Show. Carl always blamed that missed chance for not giving him the boost that would have really made him the star [he deserved to be] (not Carl's words). He was probably right. My mom still has her original of this 45 rpm with Matchbox on the A side.

motorcop,you are absolutely right.Even Jerry Lee said as much in an interview back in the 70's.Jerry Lee said Elvis jumped out in front of Carl with his version of Blue Suede Shoes on tv before Carl could recover.I'm sorry to say this but it's the truth.I'm glad Elvis the prick died first.One of the best shows I ever saw was Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee on POP GOES The COUNTRY.

Nice job mutleybird! Great song and recording by the wonderful and talented Carl Perkins. Thank you for posting the original master and not the edited sped up recording that Sam released with hope of attaining more appeal for Carl among the young teen-age record buyers. That recording makes Carl's great voice sound like one of the Chipmonks and is painful to listen to. The edited sped up version of "Your True Love", backed with "Matchbox", was released as both a 45 and a 78 on SUN Records in Feb., 1957, reaching #13 on the Billboard C&W chart and #67 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. Some interesting history: "Your True Love" was was recorded on Tues., Dec. 4, 1956, the day Elvis made a surprise visit to Sun Studios at 706 Union in Memphis, Tennessee. Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis also participated in the impromptu jam session along with Carl and Elvis that day. This rare one-time gathering became known as Million Dollar Quartet. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o3iE3H6LiaKrdqw

On this day in 1957 {March 31st} Carl Perkins , along with other Sun Records’ stars, appeared in concert in Little Rock, Arkansas... At the time his “Your True Love” was at #94 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart… Johnny Cash was also on the bill, and his "There You Go" was at #1 on Billboard's Most Played Country & Western Songs on Juke Boxes chart and #3 on Best Sellers in Stores chart... And one of the opening acts was Jerry Lee Lewis; three months later in June his "Whole Lot of Shakin' Gone On" would enter the Top 100...

@mutleybird Yes, I have enjoyed it live on Ytube before, and I'm glad that you put it here with HQ. I've known the record for a long time, and also enjoyed the alternate version the Bear Family provided. I guess my problem is that the live version -- a real treasure -- was dismissed as "crappy." But I guess that's what makes horse races.

I, of course, was talking about the sound quality/fidelity being crappy. Not the performance. Every word and vocal sound matches the released version exactly, so he was lip synching.

I always loved this song.alot of people forget that the Killer played on quite a few of Carl's cuts at Sun.They were really good friends back then and going forward.They both had a lot more talent than Elvis musically but as we know even today,it's marketing not talent that sells commercially.

The question is, was the original broadcast mimed from the record or was it live? If the latter, I could live with the crappy sound.
@mutleybird

Well, the answer is, it was "mimed" or lipsynched. Its why it matches up perfectly. But even if not, there are hundreds of other people who post the crappy sound with the video. No need to look at my videos if you're just looking for the usual, typical stuff.
