Here in the UK, the astrology pages, or more often enough half or quarter page, is the last one before the sports pages. I remember as a child when they were near the front. It almost seems these newspapers are embarassed by them nowadays. This is probably due to large increase in amateur astronomy. That, and the increasing knowledge obtained by telescopes, probes and rovers. When I listen to people, they hardly ever talk about 'the stars', their fortunes excetera, today new discoveries are capturing the imagination. Carl Sagan may have started this change with this programme. Let's hope this trend continues.

While I applaud your interest in and acceptance of the subject, please be mindful not to associate shallow "pop astrology", as found in newspapers and other mass-media marketable goods, with the proper science that bears mention. It's that very misconception that has led to the widespread zealotry that consistently ignores the subject's validity. It's a deep and complicated subject -- my mother's a PhD-grade psychologist; I've finally given her pause to question her convictions and allow me to present the subject to her in it's entirety, but despite her advanced education, it is still taking her longer than I'd have expected to pick up. Part of that may be attributed to a lesser interest in cracking the myth than I'd experienced when first I delved the topic, but two other components are, of course, her age and the thorough rigidity of her education. Luckily, she is familiar with many precepts of astrological study, since it follows the same lines of reasoning as psychology, so it could be much worse. But back to my original point: if you appreciate what the subject has to offer, please do it justice by deepening your understanding of it. Otherwise, keep up the enthusiasm. ;) EDIT: Typo involving the term "astrological science".

I studied natal astrology for years, and after many years I am highly skeptical of it. Astrologers often determined my personality correctly, and I was able to learn how they did it, but there were also a lot of things they said that had nothing to do with me. It seemed all like an elaborate guessing game at the end. Most scientists who dissect astrology often base their criticism off horoscopes, however, which I don't like because horoscopes don't represent what astrology really is.

I am well educated in math and astronomy. What force of nature is responsible for this influence?
@gaexavier2644
9 жыл бұрын
Astrology has nothing to do with 'a force of nature' causing things. It's basically just a symbolic language written in the sky. The ancients found that there was a correlation between pictures in the sky (placements of astral bodies) and events on earth. Astrology is the handwriting on the wall of heaven. Early astrologers were mathematicians, astronomers and researchers and the science disciplines were created primarily for the purpose of casting horoscopes. They recorded positions of fixed stars and visible planets rising when the king's son was born and unusual events occurred. Compilation of data over many years allowed them to develop a lexicon of meaning connected to personalities that developed after birth and planets and fixed stars rising. They also found that when wars began there were configurations of Mars and Saturn. Their symbology lexicon got so good that the knowledge became threatening to those in power. The best book on how the language of astrology developed and then was subsequently buried by religion is "The Fated Sky" by Benson Bobrick.

Horoscopes are complete bs, imo. But astrological charts have been accurate for so many people, and each chart is EXTREMELY personal and individualized. I don't think its right for so many people to call astrology stupid or BS when all they freaking know is their sun sign. It's frustrating because without a real understanding of what an astrological chart really is and how it's interpreted, people just dismiss it all as stupid. But that example with the twins in this video is just an entirely new version of stupid to me. Twins in astrological charts have barely been studied, there aren't nearly enough examples to say for sure what happens. There's so many layers to astrology it's utterly ridiculous for someone who knows nothing to call ALL of it bs (other than horoscopes, because that is imo stupid) It's complicated and there's not enough to go on about it. In the end the charts aren't there to control you, everyone must take responsibility for their own actions, it's just there for you to learn about yourself and to help you become the best version of yourself.

Are you interested in topics such as depth psychology? Astrology is just a different way of analysis which uses symbols.

e) Most popular type of astrology is natal astrology, in which astrological forces supposedly leap into action at the moment of an individual’s birth, imprinting her or him with certain characteristics. But the choice of the time of birth as the moment of supposed astrological imprinting makes no sense at all. They might argue that a mother’s body shields her baby from astrological "radiation" until birth, but that argument ignores the fact that almost all babies are born indoors.

(Saturn in first house) 9. I live my independence in the area of work. I have a imaginative, witty style of work. I need al ot of free space at work.

I did a search on that quote, and found no source. I wasn't remotely surprised that you had made it up.

Again, I did not enter this debate as an Astrologer or Scientist, I was simply stating a fact mentioned by our beloved scientist in this video: "our species is young and curious and brave"....I couldn't agree with that more.

@LiamXaoh a) Lot of astrologers dont believe in an physical affecton of the luminaries. The foundation for their astrological comprehension is based on a certain comsos - earth analogy.

That's exactly it. Venus in sextile to your Sun won't help you if you have a hard Uranus Mars aspect on the same day. Also with transits of some planets such as Neptune it is important to see their aspects in natal chart as it shows whether you are sensitive to those areas of life. You won't notice something that you don't care about. A chart is like a dish, if you put too much salt in it you won't taste the basil or all the other flavors though they may still there.

Thank you. That is what I have been saying for a very long time. I can find no evidence or facts that validates astrology. At long last you agree with me. But seeing it is not me who claims it works I could be accused of bias. However a person like you who claims it works will no doubt be able to supply the missing facts and evidence with no trouble at all. Go for it.

"The single fact that astrologers contradict each other at about every point, and the firm convictions of their own correctness supported by their experience, must call up doubts about the reliability of [their] methods. ... Not a single classical astrological element is shown to be able to resist statistical research." (Ronnie Martens and Tim Trachet, Making Sense of Astrology 1998, a review of astrological claims.)

@constructivecritism - the reason I never talk about astrology on a "contentual level" level is quite simple: a) there is no such word as contentual b) I can't discuss things about made up words c) I only like to discuss things where there is a common language

As Dr. Sagan pointed out in a later segment of Cosmos, in 1521 a comet appeared over the skies of the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan and the response of the Emperor Montezuma was to promptly execute his astrologers. They had not predicted the comet and they could not explain what it meant. As a result, Montezuma fell into a deep depression so that he was unable to lead any resistance against Cortez and the Spaniards when they came to destroy his nation. So much for astrology.

"synchronicities prove that a content perceived by an observer can, at the same time, be represented by an outside event, without any causal connection. From this it follows either that the psyche cannot be localized in space, or that space is relative to the psyche. (Jung, 1976, p. 518)" The main and fundamental thing is that astrology is not about facts and what is going to happen (which is more of your interest), it is about what the individual is going to experience.

It's like someone saying "I don't like salmon because salmon from the can tastes terrible"... probably they never tried a professional chef's main course based on salmon... sometimes our negative experiences about something come from reduced samples of what actually is out there.

My views on the doctrine of Astrology serve as a guide to me. I have never used astrology against science, or vice-versa. Astrology I believe is more closely knit towards the sciences of psychology and sociology. And with both of these sciences, there is a HUGE book waiting to be printed. Astronomy is the science of knowing the anatomy of our planets...easy to understand. The human brain and thoughts, motives, emotions, fears, shames and...we're dealing with a much more complex matter here.

PS Liam...I'll leave you with some words from Albert Einstein. He was a scientist..."The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."
