I'm about 39 minutes into watching this video and I can't help but comment--it's a damn shame Carl Sagan didn't live long enough to enjoy the discovery of thousands of extra-solar planets. We are in great need of voices of clarity such as his. He died way too young.

@Paul Merritt Instead of smug, I think you can view Carl Sagan as comfortable with his knowledge. And comfortable in this setting. He knows it is not a fight, but a quest we are all on. The question you refer to is at 1:32:21. The beeping you hear is the “end of tape” warning. Mr Sagan was answering the relatively common question when the videotape ran out. I’m sure he has calmly speculated on your other big bang question as well. Seek and ye shall find.

My friend went into labor that same day, and I told her she had a time limit and I wasn't missing the chance to hear my space dad speak. I missed the birth, but wouldn't change a thing. When he was answering the "how you will be remembered" question and he jokingly mentioned "I hope this will not come for many years".... I cried. It had come just 2 years later. Man how I wish we could have seen more of this amazing scholar. There are no better philosophers than scientists. And what amazes me is how well synched they all become the smarter they are. As if they grasp there is one fundamental truth about reality which is just too difficult to comprehend for the majority of the population.

This may sound strange to most, but to a few it will make perfect sense. I have the original COSMOS series on my phone (downloaded KZitem videos), and I listen to it perhaps every other day as I fall asleep, or as I take my exercise walks in a local nature reserve. Doing this has helped me in my discussions with other people about many topics. It helps me stay focused, level-headed, and (more often than not) happy in dealings with other adults. Perhaps most importantly, it has given me patience to help children explore the world around them, to answer their questions in ways that promotes their thinking, and to work towards a better world I hope they inherit.

Thank you Carl Segan for the legacy! Carl knowledge combined with compassion are the true manifestation of our objective reality. Today, our generation and the younger ones, can hopefully become the first one to eliminate world hunger, poverty and homeliness. What Carl thought us is that scientifically we are all the same and even more than this we are one. Our generation is now ready for the next stage of our evolution. Soon we will be free and our ecosystem will finally reach its equilibrium.

Such a smart human’s human being. Such hope for humanity, in an era of chaos. So outspoken, with a soft, stern, and professional, always recognizable voice. Wrong. Carl Sagan and his mood are already forgotten. The university is in ruins along with that whole middle class delusion of society and comfort and security we were then still holding onto. The computer age has shown us that wonders and monsters will be engineered and grown here. We were always lying to ourselves about the timelines of space transport and how it crushes, not builds, our sense of meaning. We tried to pretend that we are that one chimp who stays revisiting the mirror placed in the jungle for days in awe but really we walked away after an hour with the others. And big color TVs had gotten really cheap just before Cosmos came out. In some ways the best time of my life.

"What further humiliations can you see for us in the near future?" Sagan: "You see, the idea that our sense of self-worth comes not from anything that we've done, not from anything worthy but by an accident of birth, is where the crux of the humiliation is, in my opinion. I would say those of us worried about being demoted, those of us who wish for us to be important should do something important. We should make an easily understandable, achievable, and inspiring goal for the human species and then set out and do it. That would give us the confidence that we sorely lack by being dependent on our self-esteem being based on nothing we do. We want to have self-esteem? Let's make a planet in which nobody is starving. Let's make a planet in which men and women have equal access to power. Let's make a planet in which no ethnic group has it over another ethnic group. Let's have a planet in which science and engineering are used for the benefit of everybody on the planet. And, my personal idiosyncrasy, let's have a world in which we go to other worlds."

When I listen to Sagan, the first thing I think is "why does he talk with so many pauses in his speaking, why doesn't he get on with it?" Then I realize that this is the way he really gets through to his listeners- make a point, then give it a second to really sink in, then continue. No only was he brilliant, but he was truly a patient man; a man who loved humanity and wanted to serve it the very best way he could.
