Directed by Renato Castellani in 1963, MARE MATTO is set in the port of Genoa. Here, a group of sailors from all walks of life meet at Margherita's boarding house. Their ship is about to set sail for Sicily to deliver their precious cargo - hundreds of liters of wine - on time. But between the captain's arrest and the vagaries of the weather, the voyage promises to be a bumpy one...
Starring Gina Lollobrigida and Jean-Paul Belmondo, MARE MATTO was presented in competition at the 24th Venice International Film Festival.
Firmly rooted (since the 1940s) in the music of Italian films of all kinds, Carlo Rustichelli composed the soundtrack. True to the maestro's tradition, his score is imbued with a sound reminiscent of the Franco-Italian comedies and dramas of the period.
