I notice that, at points, he does some SRR-esque hittin'-em-hard-as-he's-leaving kind of fighting. It's very difficult to throw shots with that kind of power when you're backing up.

59 Kos in 87 fights does not equal 59% KO ratio, more like 70%. And yes, Monzon hit very hard but he was not a pressure fighter, like hagler, Monzon took his time and patiently destroyed his opponents. He was tall and lean and had an incredible control of the distance, he used the jab perfectly to set up the devastating right hand. I see him dominating Hagler mainly because of the height and reach advantage,

I love Marvin Hagler and his heart. I believe both, Monzon & Hagler's heart are among those rarities found in any human.... Marvelous would attempted the inside fight on Monzon, but Monzon's reach would've cut up Hagler, trickling blood into his eyes that would've then left Hagler open for the kill..... The fight get's stopped in the 13th round (yes, I'm taking this fight back to the old school era)..... Monzon victorious over Hagler!!! Monzon wins!!! Monzon continues his reign!!!! ARGENTINA!

I love Hagler and saw him beat Vito A, but Monzon not only had great reach but amazingly accurate punches. Though flat footed, he seemed to avoid being hurt at all. To simply claim that Marvin would beat him as easily as some claim is simply ridiculous. A man does not dominate an era like he did against some excellent competition by accident. Besides, all the comparisons are futile anyway. Just one fan trying to impress others with their "knowledge."

He was a great boxer but he had opponents of lower level than those of Hagler (Benvenuti,Bouttier, , Valdes, Briscoe). In my humble as reasonable opinion I fear that he could not have defeated Mugabi and he would have been defeated by Hearns which was as tall as he but much faster and unpredictable in their movements. He wasn't stronger and more solid than Duran.

But it happens that there are periods in which there are numerous great champions and periods in which there are fewer champions and less strong. It happens in every sport that the undisputed champion in a period would have been one of many if he had lived in another. You should also have the good fortune to be born at the right time. For example Sonny Liston, one of the most frightful, devastating, relentless hitters in the history of boxing would have been champion for at least ten years in a row if he had lived in another period but he had the misfortune to meet Ali ,who with his exceptional speed never seen before would have confused even Hercules.

JC Denton What do you mean, that a lightweight can not, then, become an important middleweight? Many world champions in the middleweight when they were younger were welterweight or super welterweight and were champions in those categories .. Duran turned professional very very young (he was only sixteen years of age) so it is natural that he began as a light weight and then when he became an adult has become a middleweight. Duran was a great middleweight and just observe his way of doing boxing hissapproach so aggressive and tenacious, his strength and physical endurance with those of Monzon to understand immediately and easily that the two were equivalent and I do not know who would have won if the two had met.

+angelo balzano Monzon would have been much to tough and resilient and possessing of too much stamina and heart to have ever been beaten by Hearns .I would pick Monzon to stop Hearns . A fresh Hagler fought an old Benny Briscoe whereas Monzon fought a peak Briscoe; I have heard Marvin Hagler giving Carlos Monzon plenty of respect in several interviews / articles;.particularly Carlos's punch power and his astute ring craftiness .Valdes is still regarded to this day as having been an excellent fighter/ champion among Boxing commentators . Benvenuti was an Olympic gold medallist when it meant something and he was also highly rated by Boxing experts as a fine 2 weight World Champion pro but Monzon destroyed him .I believe that Monzon would have also been far to clever etc for the likes of Mugabi .Of course , all of our opinions will never be put to the test. BTW Hagler and Monzon are probably my two favourite ever fighters .

Hagler not a pressure fighter? Hagler was constantly on the attack, thowing ounches from all angles and cutting the ring to his opponents. If that's not a pressure fighter, well.... Duran was a lightweight turned middleweight. Hearns was a WW turned middleweight. Monzon was a natural middleweight with a murderous, accurate and vicious right hand. Hearns had a suspect jaw, he got caught with a big punch and it was over. Monzon took some trmendous blows in his career, from Briscoe, from Valdes,

Monzon did what no other middleweight has been able to do. He had great timing and threw his punches from harsh angles. Nice reflexes and abitlity to dodge puches. He could moved his entire body out of the way of a punch versus just his head. Now..... with that said... and all respect to him for what he accomplished in the ring... there is no way he would of taken Marvin Hagler. I see Hagler dominating Monzon in every aspect.

Are you really sure? The win of Leonard against Hagler was an infamy almost certainly created to promote a rematch that would earn a lot of money. In truth Monzon never had opponents really strong.I would have liked to see him against Hagler or Hearns. Are you really surre that Monzon would have concluded something aginst them ? For me Monzon would have been in huge, excessive difficulty with the extraordinary able of Hagler of cashing punches and with the exceptional speed of Hearns.

Okay you are completely wrong here man, 1. Hagler was not a pressure fighter he was a boxer-puncher he would slowly work down guys with his jab switching from orthodox to south paw stance watch Hagler vs Sibson 2.Hagler was a better boxer than Monzon and would slowly work Monzon out of there 3.Just pure stupidity Monzon was 5cm taller than Hagler, that's nothing significant that dosen't mean anything if you actually boxed you would know that and a 2cm reach advantage come on seriously....
@IanBillen
13 жыл бұрын
@CLEVELEFS Yes. That would be about the extent of it. Probably an extended version of what he did to Alan Minter. I see Hagler stopping a battered Monzon in 8 or 9. Monzon would not be able to handle Hagler's brawn and solid punching power so he would have no choice but to try and outbox Marvin. As you know... Hagler's boxing skills were just as superb as his solid punching (footwork, speed, timing, combo's...it was all there...especially a Hagler in 82-83). Monzon's universally outmatched.

Marcelo Hardoy- Hagler was NOT a pressure fighter at all! I think you've just watched his fight with Hearns that was not the usual Hagler, Hagler would dominate Monzon in his south paw stance and not be knocked out if Hearns or Mugabi who hit harder than Monzon couldn't do it then Monzon couldn't, and Hagler fought Duran who was alot more technically sound than Monzon was and beat him and this was all when Hagler wasn't in his prime so to your conclusion you would be wrong
@JUHSTIIIIN

No he would not have he could never KO Hagler, he did not hit anywhere near the power of Thomas Hearns and hearns hit him so hard his hand broke on Haglers face, Haglers temporalis muscle was larger than normal a doctor said it was like Hagler having a football helmet on guys like Mugabi, Hearns, ect couldn't get him down no one could, He was never koed or floored and you think Monzon could KO him...please, Your limited knowledge of Hagler makes it obvious you don't really know much about this

And stop talking about the reach 2cm is nothing at all... Do you box?, Hagler had great boxing skills and was a southpaw which Monzon would of had to change and adapt too, Hagler has the greatest chin p4p ever, Monzon got dropped by a damn Welter man c'mon with Haglers power, Monzons lazy jabs will be perfect for Marvin to counter Marvin was one of the best counter punchers ever and would dominate Monzon there aswell
