"...using the enemy pawn as a shield..." Magnus is like one of the action movie heroes that uses a bad guy as a body shield when getting shot at by other bad guys. When you're down material sometimes it works to use your opponent's pieces.
@RafaelSang-tq8ur

That is one of the defensive tools: using the opponent's pawn as a shield because it can not move to attack in this case.

Already playing a dubious defense as black, Magnus gives a 2600 player two more tempi AND sacs his queen and still draws the game. It's almost like an anti-chess: how much risk can he take without losing?

Magnus seems to be doing a lot of home cooking with an opening book from the 70s, there are a lot of obscure recipes in the old and odd openings. On the other hand, maybe Magnus is taking a lesson from the old GM Lajos Portisch who had his openings work in a black briefcase that he carried everywhere. Magnus has all the openings in his memory.

Phalanx, plow, you're all getting us hooked on lost words :). Carlsen there, perhaps offered one tempo too much in the first couple of moves, later not holding on to his rook after the queen sac, to set up the exact right amount of resistance from his opponent. Wow. It's a personal laboratory he's in, that he runs to keep his heart rate above 80. Let's all be glad he's a chess player, not working in science.

funny that some opening moves are considered bad moves but Carlsen plays them anyway. Disrespecting his opponents and insulting their intelligence. hehe I've been binge-watching these Carsen vs vids. This stuff makes one wonder at what point if any do you not have choices anymore but only a predetermined set of moves. Maybe that's part of Carlsen's method. Shake up the norm and see what happens.
