Palmer was an incredible athlete and very good defensive midfielder. He wasn't the most skilful and not that useful going forward, but the same applies to loads of highly rated defensive midfielders. Because Palmer was such an athlete he could get up and down the pitch, where lesser athletes can't, and just sit in front of the back 4. He could of done that and just passed sideways like so many do, but instead he utilised his incredible athleticism to get around the pitch.

@tomrogers7110

Speaking as a Leeds fan, I must agree that he was a very good player and is somewhat underrated, but I am of the view that he was better as a centre-back than in midfield. Whenever Wilkinson played him at centre-back, he was a force to be reckoned with. I once saw him in that position against Man Utd in the 1995/96 home game at Elland Road: he made several great Man Utd players look very ordinary that day. It must be said he was still a good midfielder and could even get you the odd goal, but he was nowhere near as good in that position as he was in defence. I never understood why successive managers played him out of position, but I suspect his own wishes may have had something to do with it. A strong manager could have turned him into a truly excellent player. As an aside, it's funny how perceptions about players, no matter how wrong or unfair, take root as facts that everybody believes, even though they fly in the face of what actually occurred. I regard opinions about Carlton Palmer as a sort of 'acid test' for whether somebody really knows his football. People who are full of it will dismiss him as 'crap' or offer some other similarly unnuanced negative opinion about his abilities.

@@theprodigyowl4660 I would concede that he wasn't of international class and in my opinion he probably shouldn't have been selected for England, but that's a world away from saying he was the worst player ever for England, which is absurd. People who think Palmer is one of the worst players to play for England clearly never watched him in his prime. For a start, he was Man Of The Match in the 0-0 against France in Euro 92. And after that, there is the simple fact that in that era only Paul Ince was a better English defensive midfielder - Palmer was superb between 91-94 at SWFC, often absolute dominating matches and setting the stage for Waddle and Sheridan, who took the plaudits as more creative players. They could never have done what they did without Palmer though.

***** One thing that England has failed to produce over many years is players who can truly take hold of a game. People say Gerrard and Lampard, but for me, they don't do it often enough. Beckham had his moments but again didn't do it consistently. Scholes England career was shoe-horned and Nicky Butt didn't remain injury free for long enough to really show it. In a lot of ways, it's what we lack now, to this day. Wilshere can't hack it and Cleverley is useless. The last truly great player England produced who could literally grab a game by the scruff of the neck and run the show was Paul Gascoigne. Since then, only one has come close, and that's Joey Barton. You can sub him on with 25 minutes to go and know for a fact that if you score, he will probably be involved, whether it's putting the cross, starting the move, or even scoring it himself. Look at the Newcastle 4-4 Arsenal game. He was literally involved in every Newcastle goal. He's not gifted in the way Gazza was. He doesn't have the flair of Gascoigne, but to take control of a game is a skill in itself and Barton has that. He also has exceptional passing ability and it's something we've lacked for a long time in England.
@InvisibleYetVisible
8 жыл бұрын
***** Mark Sesum, sounds like a very common British name that, but I'll take you to task.... exactly what is it that you disagree with? The fact that England don't produce players you can take hold of the game..... yeah of course we do, just like we did against Iceland..... oh wait. People like yourself who lack a footballing brain, probably equate 'taking hold of a game' to a commentators phrase, but the reality is, a player who takes hold of a game is simply a player who you can give the ball and they'll know what to do at the right time. Scholes was probably the best in recent times but he was also shoe horned in the England team. Gazza was probably the best in my lifetime. When Gazza was on the ball, you knew something would happen. Joey Barton may not have the skill of Gazza, but he is one of those players who used to try and put a shift in when others weren't and would always try and lift the game either with some good passing or free kicks etc. To be honest, I get the impression you're an Arsenal fan, and that explains a lot, because he mugged off that muppet Gervinho lol. He's had your knickers down a few times actually.

Not at all. Not the most cultured footballer, but a phenomenal athlete who'd run all day long and was a nightmare to play against. Ahead of his time, really. Every pressing team has a Carlton, these days.

He's never international class, that's for sure. There were much better holding midfielders around at the time, Ince, Batty etc, even older players like McMahon or Kevin Richardson would have been better, but he did the best he could with his limited ability. He was a decent pro and had a fair record. 3 League Cup finals and one FA Cup final with Weds and Leeds. I think Geoff Thomas was a worse England cap by far...

@@jasonwilletts559 True, many are capped but few become regulars...unless there's a serious lack of competition. That's why it's strange that Carlton had such a run in the team, when there were clearly better players available. You give Taylor a pass on Euro '92 Right back situation as there were horrendous injuries. Literally EVERY right back was injured from 1st choice Rob Jones, then 2nd choice Lee Dixon, Paul Parker and Gary Stevens, through to even serviceable outsiders like Mel Sterland etc (who got injured at the end of Leeds title run in). Keith Curle my have sounded a crazy option, but I gather there wasn't a huge amount of choice there. But Carlton playing so many games for England when there were clearly better players available is only something Taylor could have answered. Tony Daley was another one. Outstanding for Villa..anonymous for England. Even people like Barnes struggled to make a regular impact for England. Apart from the Brazil wonder goal, the 15 minute cameo against Argentina and the freekick against Holland in '93, he didn't have too many memorable games for England. But then he wasn't playing in the same system that Liverpool used. He said himself in an interview, that at Liverpool he'd get say 15 or 20 touches of the ball and maybe go on 5-6 runs with it and maybe get one goal or assist. But with England, sometimes he'd be lucky to get 4-5 touches. And then he's playing with people like Keith Curle and Carlton Palmer, rather than Alan Hansen and Steve McMahon...also those players know you and your habits better because they play with you day in day out. For England you only meet up once every few months and often with a totally different group of players...

No, he was a phenomenal player, purely cus of his fitness, effort and physicality. England managers just didn't know what to do with him and played him wrongly.
