Can't get enough of this one song, for some reason her facial expressions and mannerisms add so much emotion to this song.

When people say they don't understand what is being sung, this is an example to demonstrate you don't need to know the words. Just enjoy the music, Jessye Norman's magnificent voice, the acting, the inflection and drama, the flirtatious melody.

Jessye Norman bringing on the sexy with that little dance and wink right at the beginning. I wish I could have been lucky enough to hear her in person. 🎶❤️🎶

She *invests* herself into playing the role of Carmen, just for the benefit of this one aria. What a sublime actress as well as singer!

So true. She was also in a movie. I think back in the 80's. I've got to see if I can find it.

This is just incredible because it is probably the only recording - EVER - of her using chest voice! And it is so exciting to see her getting so into character and having so much fun! I think that anyone who is a true fan of great singers and of great singing will spit their drink out over this video, it must be literally be one of the rarest musical moments ever captured on video. This is why the audience is going so crazy throughout the piece! If I am not mistaken, the ONLY other time she used chest voice EVER was for a split second in her Spirituals Concert with Kathleen Battle from 1990, in the song "You Can Tell The World", for the words "...you can tell the nations about that" - and there, too, a wave of commotion swept over the audience right in the middle of the song! I never heard her sing live but I was SO CLOSE; I was in the audience for opening night of The Makropulos Case at the Met on January 6, 1996, but the tenor actually DIED onstage before Norman's first entrance, and the performance was canceled! This video is a rare treasure in the history of music.

If you listen to the first part of the aria from Ariadne auf Naxos she goes very low with her chest voice ( Es gibt ein Reich)
