I'm pretty sure Carmine invented drums, every drummer that came after him just copied him, and they were all more revered and successful than him.

Good interview, well done! Carmine was certainly an early pioneer of rock drumming, and his influence on others is undeniable. Of course there will be those Zep fanboys who will get their knickers in a knot about any assertion that their champion Bonham might have learned a trick or two from Carmine.

Well every rock drummer was influenced by contemporaries and drummers before them. Do you think Carmine Appice learned nothing from anybody else, do you think he invented rock drumming? The specific Bonham - Appice technique influence is well documented and I've read/heard it many times before. There's nothing to get knickers in a twist about - it does not diminish Bonham's skills whatsoever, despite what you may believe. There is also no need for such a sneering comment as well about 'Zep fanboys'.

@@jimmycampbell78 No, obviously not. Obviously Carmine also learned from his predecessors as well. That is normal evolution in the development of one's own signature technique. Everybody does it, whatever their instrument. Agreed, there is nothing to get all worked up about, but somehow there are those of a certain persuasion, especially the Bonham acolytes, who cannot countenance any suggestion that their mythical hero, annointed as he was by the gods, somehow might have been influenced by some other mere mortal such as Carmine. You only need to check out some of the snide comments made on this page as well as other videos pertaining to the Carmine - Bonham subject.

@@jimmycampbell78 I have listened to Carmine in those interviews and he is not overtly claiming credit. He is suggesting that he was an influence in certain degrees, to others' styles / techniques. And I don't see where he is being egocentric as is being suggested by others who opine on this subject. As for the issue of fanboys....indeed there are many of them out there who get worked up about any suggestion that Bonham was not the ultimate originator and master of all that is rock drumming. Any suggestion to the contrary is to them, considered sacrilege. And oftentimes, any person who dares suggest something which isn't part of the Zeppelin gospel is himself pilloried.

@@garyh.238 I think you're massively overestimating the LZ 'gospel' and LZ 'fanboys'. May I suggest it's because you're not a major fan of them yourself, so it's irritating to you when other people praise them to the skies. Rock drumming? Personally I would give lots of credit to the likes of Ginger Baker, Carmine, Ian Paice, Mitch Mitchell, Carl Palmer, Bill Ward and perhaps even the idiosyncratic Keith Moon as well.

It’s hilarious. In his Modern Drummer interview back in the early 80s, Appice said “I don’t listen to (Deep) Purple at all because Ian Paice used to listen to me a lot; it would be taking my own licks. I listen to Zeppelin, I listen to Queen.” Meanwhile, Paice had better technique…. now Appice is claiming that Bonham copied him? Sorry Carmine, you clearly forget your own words. You admitted with the above that you were learning stuff from Bonham. Nothing wrong with that btw; they all learned from listening to each other! Just don’t be so egotistical (insecure) that you have to knock a guy who is dead for decades.

I wanted to vomit when he mentioned Trump. I went to high school with Carmine’s cousin Steve. We used to talk about his famous cousin all the time in the 70’s. North Bellmore, N.Y.
