I'd like to see this guy's top solo games, as he clearly is extremely knowledgeable and knows a well executed solo mode/variant.

I will do this. I am well overdue for something like this. What has always held me back is that there are so many different types of solo games, do a top list is very tough depending on what people like to play. Right now, I am leaning on doing a recommendation list per category of solo, giving my favorite and then some “if you like this, you should also check out these”.

Very glad it helped. Been doing these for about 3 years now and will keep doing them to help solo gamers make informed decisions. Thanks!

Grear review as always. Thank you kindly, Sir😇🙏 Was a bit hesitant about this one as it didn't look that appealing but... your review convinced me.

I actually hesitated too at first but after 5 games, I am satisfied with the purchase.

Seeing this for a decent price at retail now and am very tempted to buy given how smooth the solo mode seems to be.

Rulebook, page 5, step 11: Starting with the first player and going in clockwise order, each player may move their employees up to a total of 6 steps on their own Company boards; each movement must be made to an orthogonally (not diagonally) adjacent space. After an employee moves, it must be laid down. Employees may be moved onto empty building spaces on the player board. In this setup diagram, the yellow player’s Company board (page 4) shows one possible arrangement of employees after these 6 moves have been made. Rulebook, page 5, step 12: Finally, once these movements are completed, each player may activate employees (see page 13). So now the game can start with the first player choosing their action...

Then you pay to stand them up where needed. I think I missed that part.

Awesome review! I’m a bit confused with the Solo scoring. E.g the AI placed a disk on the “pay 1 cube in exchange for 2 VPs up to 6 times”, does that mean I have to pretend as if I would “return” them to the supply but the cubes actually stay in my supply in order to use them if I need them??

It has been a long time since I have played this so I don’t remember, but I bet their is a clarification on BGG about what to do. Sorry I cannot be of greater help.

13:07 You chose the Management action, so you cannot use the Construction department (14:13). Can only use management tile actions (like you did 15:16 and 15:40). I saw you corrected it later, just to make a note in case anyone wants to skip to the moment of the video.

Unfortunately, I have decided to sell this one off. I never even finished the first game. Last time this happened to me was with Spirit Island. I didn't feel as disgusted with Carnegie as I did with Spirit Island, however. It's just that Carnegie isn't the type of Euro experience I want in a game, and here's why: It really felt too sandboxy for a Euro, which created a lot of AP for me. That's the bottom line, and I feel that Euros shouldn't be so widely open ended like this. Decision making takes too long. There needs to be a tighter restrictive element to it. The fact that you need to pay attention to the AI's action in order to help pick your strategy, plus all the different strategies that you can do, is just a disaster. Sold, with rhe expansion unopened.

Sorry to hear this one struck out for you. It’s funny you should say it’s sandboxy. I can see where you are coming from but lots of folks say the opposite as a slight against it since you have to take the same type and number of actions in each game.

@@JohnLaRuffa That's true also. It just doesn't jive with me like other Euros made by Feld, Pfister, and Turczi.

I also really enjoy this game. My top games are terraforming mars like and this provides a much better strategy without the cards. I’m not a worker placement guy but this scratches that itch definitely.

I like Carnegie a lot more than Terraforming Mars, simply due to the increased variety in what you can do.

One criticism I've been seeing about Carnegie's solo mode is that you pretty much adopt the same strategy each game with some minor tweaks. Is that true?

I don’t know. I have not played it enough to feel that way. You can try it out for free on board game arena to see how you feel about it. I just like being able to play such an interesting game solo more than anything else!
