Thanks for the video. I love the collection and I'm very inspired by your setup. In using this self watering method, one drawback for me would be to change all of the pots my nepenthes plants are currently using to have more bottom surface area connecting the felt. I wonder if it would work to cut felt strips that you could stick into any pot and somehow connect them to the wet felt layer at the bottom? Just an idea :)

Yeah something like that could definitely work. For a large collection though, it might not be practical, especially when it comes time to repotting. The roots will also grow into the felt

That’s a nice set up. I was actually worried about having my pinguicula in the same tent with my Nepenthes because of the humidity. How much is the humidity in your setup usually ruining at?
@pings_n_things

Humidity usually isn't an issue with Pings as long as you have good air flow (hence the fans). My humidity is around 70%

@@pings_n_things I wanted to ask you, are pinguiculas turning color under the Yescom 225? I’ve had mine under them but the red leaf version of my aganatas are not turning color even 6 inches away.

@@tattooedchick24 yes, mine are about 8" away from the Yescoms. How long have yours been that close? It can take time and keep in mind they won't express those colors if they're in their succulent stage

@@pings_n_things they are dewy so they aren’t in the succulent stage. I’ve had them for a month. Started out at 16 inches away, they switched to 10 inches away now they are about 7 1/2 inches away. They’ve been that close about 3 days. They’ve been growing like crazy just that the newest growth has never changed color. When I got the plant it was a very dark red. The growth since I’ve had it had stayed green.

@@tattooedchick24 the old leaves won't usually change color much (if at all). You'll only really see a color change on new growth once the plant has been under intense enough light long enough to produce those stress pigments. I'd give it at least a month under new lighting conditions to see a noticeable difference

Wow that water tray is genius. How long have you been using it? I’m surprised there’s not moss growing all over it. Any problems with algae?
@pings_n_things
2 жыл бұрын
I've been using the trays for about 5 months now. I started using self-watering pots of different designs for my Nepenthes about a year ago. There are actually some areas starting to be colonized by star moss. I've thought about growing love sphagnum in-between the pots. I might do that for the bottom shelf but the top shelf is too crowded and pots get shuffled around all the time. There haven't been any problems with algae. That's the benefit to using the black trays with the mat on top- no light gets in so it's really hard for algae to grow. I was using a lot of clear pots for my previous self-watering set-up and had a lot of algae growth.

I’m trying a capillary mat for my Nepenthes. Have you figured out which pots work best? I mainly use net pots but I’m not sure how well they wick up the water.
@pings_n_things
2 жыл бұрын
Net pots are my favorite to use. I've also used fabric pots but I'm leaning away from those since it's easy for the roots to grow into the sides. That's one thing you'll have to keep an eye on even with net pots. The roots will have a tendency to grow into the capillary matting. It's not a huge issue as long as you keep an eye on your plants, give them big enough pots to keep the roots from growing out and pick the pots up from time to time
