It's so hard to believe these characters aren't real people, they are so brilliantly acted and the writing so superb. I see my family in them, and I'm sure many other people do, too. I remember watching these skits when they were originally on. We didn't realize the talent that was right before us. Today's shows can't hold a candle to this one.

Carol embodies the craziness that is Eunice! From her walk, to her wild facial expressions, like at 10:07! It floors me every time I click on these episodes and see her with that hairdo and damn outfit. And then she talks and the accent spews out lol. I often keep my playlist of The Family on repeat. I even prepare meals in preparation for back to back episodes, just as if this were a modern day show. Carol, I truly thank YOU for Eunice! 💚

I think Mama, Ed, Philip, and Eunice are tragic characters in their own way. I think Mama had a terrible husband and it caused her to bring up her children in the overbearing manner. Ellen had it good because she was the favorite, but Philip was constantly shut down and, of course, Eunice got it the worst because she was Mama's primary caregiver.

I always felt sorry for the Ed character, played so brilliantly by Harvey. He was constantly humiliated and taken for granted by both of those high-strung (a nice way to say it) women, and was always shot down. I think he would have risen to the challenge if he had been given any respect or consideration. He gravitated toward Mickey Hart (another stellar characterization) because he was given respect by his employee. He was probably very effective at the hardware store. The worst insult was when Eunice told her sister Ellen that "Duke Reeves" was the only man she ever loved! And that she ended up "stuck with" Ed!

Money in that case could’ve solved a few and couple closer. I hate to admit it but it is money sometimes that buys happiness. It upset me lots when Eunuce counted her lost hopes of getting a better living but to use that emergency money they keot fir the family was unwise even if Micky deserved a dream breather and Ed could benefit from that trip wider by having an assistant with him. Money and a bit of consideration was to solve that issue but they don’t have much. 🤷🏻♀️

i've often thought the same thing. but remember in the 70s we were in the midst of corporate fever as stores like Kmart, Sears and JcPenney exploded into huge department stores in suburban shopping centers all across America. The struggling small business owners were looked on as folks who were holding onto an old fashioned way of doing business in their decades-old downtown little store who didn't have as a good a selection or prices and who were unwilling or unable to grow. No longer did you have to order what you wanted from the small store, you could go get it at Sears that same day! Out with the old in the new was what excited people. Then in the 80s/90s we began appreciating, respecting and understanding the small business and its uniqueness once again.

Dat don't matter to Eunice. She wants a beeutiful home, nice clothes, trips to London, Paris, and Rome, and a husband to sweep her off her feet and take her dere, and if dat Ed don't give all dose things to her, then he don't love her at all, and she's gonna keep remindin' him of dat until he gets off his duff and do all dose things for her. The "Family" sketches are the best gallows humor I've ever seen. Unfortunately, those people who are like Eunice and Mama will laugh at it, not realizing that pointing to THEM as being a big part of the problem.

Carol Burnett is a legend for a good reason. The Family episodes were great, very Chaplinesque. Oops, little mistake by Harvey at 7:53, Carol and Tim almost laughed, but they just continued like pros.

Dave Glo the mistakes are what make the show tho, to me at least. It shows that they’re only human, just like the rest of us! Like you said, it also reveals what pros the other cast members are, for being able to keep poker faces so well!

That was no mistake.... its said that Tim Conway, would always try to make them laugh during the scene. If its serious or not 😜

I always felt sorry for the Ed character. He was constantly humiliated and taken for granted by both of those high-strung (a nice way to say it) women, and was always shot down. I think he would have risen to the challenge if he had been given any respect or consideration. The worst was when Eunice told her sister Ellen that "Duke Reeves" was the only man she ever loved!

swtv1754 Oh, sure! I absolutely saw that as a kid. But, I was thinking about a motion picture that’s released in the theaters. Mama’s mouth would probably be funny as hell, since she would not be censored as much! 😂😂😂
