Caroline Garcia is into the quarter-finals in San Diego after overcoming Sloane Stephens in three sets.
Garcia lost to Stephens recently in Cincinnati and has struggled for form through parts of 2023, in contrast to the height of 2022 that saw her win the end of year WTA Tour Finals.
The Frenchwoman admitted her serve has not always been consistent this year, while against Stephens in the deciding set, she won 11 from 14 first serves. “Serve is a huge weapon of mine,” she said in response to Vansh asking how important this part of the game was for her, particularly as she led the tour in aces last year.
“When my serve is not working, it is always tricky for me to manage.”
“We are working on my serve, getting first serves in, it’s very important for me,” she told reporters.
Of the match, Garcia was full of praise for her opponent.
“Sloane is always a tricky player,” she told journalists after the match. “I was very happy with my level today. Sloane is a big fighter so it’s not done until it’s over.”
Vansh asked Caroline about the origins of her flying celebration, on which she told him it “started a long time ago at the Fed Cup with Team France. And it was just an inside joke. But then it stuck and some fans created a hashtag on Twitter with #flywithcaro and I thought it was fun. It was different and I liked it.”
Garcia will play Danielle Collins in the next round after the American beat Jelena Ostapenko.
But Garcia is aware of her next opponent’s “big hitting.”
“I just have to be focused on myself. She can be very loud on the other side of the net.”
Regarding the Simona Halep four year ban for doping irregularities, Garcia had this to say: “In the past we had some cheaters so it’s good we have doping monitored.”
