Carolyn Holmberg was an early director of Boulder County Parks and Open Space. She was instrumental in creating the open space program.
Carolyn was the chair of the Parks & Open Space Advisory Committee when she was appointed to be director in 1983 and she served until her death in 1998. During her tenure, Boulder County passed its first open space sales tax (1993) and the county made 200 open space acquisitions totaling over 40,000 acres of land, which speaks to Carolyn’s prodigious work ethic. But her true legacy lies in the relationships she built with farmers and ranchers. These relationships created the foundation of trust that enabled Boulder County to partner with the agricultural community to preserve the county’s agricultural character.
After Carolyn’s death, Boulder County rededicated Rock Creek Farm as the Carolyn Holmberg Preserve at Rock Creek Farm. We hope that this video will help people appreciate the person behind the name.
