From version 4.2 of the Carp Pilot Pro the ability to support boats with no built in autopilot is introduced. You will have to your your remote transmitter to drive the boat and to open bait trays. But you will get great support for managing fishing spots, visual guiding while driving, the great echo sounder integration with live mapping support.
Building in a pixhawk with GPS and Compass is no easy task. I regularly receive questions from anglers having a hard time installing it, configuring all of the options and tuning the auto pilot behaviour. It is a little difficult, that's the honest truth. And I have always had great respect for any angler who is up for the challenge.
As this video will show, you can have a great experience with the Carp Pilot Pro also if you take an easier path. If you already have a NMEA capable echo sounder built into your boat you do not have to prepare anything.
Let's say you have put in a Deeper (Chirp+, Chirp+ 2.0 or Pro+ 2.0) and have added an Antenna (or Booster) and possibly also a router on shore. Then you can use the Carp Pilot Pro straight away by selecting the new GPS connection option.
If you, like many, have built in a Raymarine Dragonfly Pro or the old Wi-fish, these echo sounders do not offer NMEA. But it is actually very easy to build your own wifi GPS. I will make a separate video on how you do it. With just a couple of parts (a GPS and an ESP 8266) and a few wires to solder, the solution is put together. And the software needed for the ESP is not only easy to install, it is also easy to use. All you need to do is to tell it to connect to your Raymarine wifi. And that is all there is to it. Building such a wifi GPS is something most people can handle. And it does not take much time either.
You will miss few of the really cool auto pilot features. But the experience will no matter be a huge lift from just driving the boat with your remote transmitter with no visual support at all.
Enjoy!
