The carpenters were categorized on easy listening genre. When this single first came out, fans got mad. Because it was not yet a thing before for a ballad to have a guitar riff. Fans went crazy. But they fought for it. And now it is a masterpiece.

The first "power ballad." Guitar solo by the late great Tony Peluso.

Most perceptive and awesome reaction. Richard has been credited with creating what is now referred to as a “Power Ballad.” He got guitarist Tony Peluso to do it. After getting on to the same idea of what Richard wanted, Tony got it done in one take! There’s a side story about Tony. He worked a little for them earlier but not a lot. But both Karen and Richard were impressed. She called him to offer the gig, he didn’t believe it was Karen as he was a now a big fan but couldn’t believe it was her. Fast forward and he became their guitarist for most of the rest of their run to 1981, I think. You should see his name on a lot of their songs but the fuzzy solo is only on this masterpiece. There are live versions of this song where you can see Tony at work. Written by Richard and his writing partner John Bettis, that’s a lot of story time with these two. So much history. I don’t have your whole list in front of me so let me suggest the Leon Russell trifecta, I think you did at least one, if memory serves. Superstar, A Song For You and This Masquerade.

Man, Karen, one in a million! its so easy straight to her voice, and stay locked in, but we got to give kudos to her brother Richard composing, and has awesome voice himself together they were magic:)

I'd call that guitar distortion "fuzz".

Richard and his genius. First ballad with a kick ass guitar solo (Tony Peluso) in rock history. And Karen nothing else to say about her talent. Just special. Requests would be Song For You, Ticket To Ride, Desperado, You're The One". Anything by Carpenters is great.

Seems as great as the guitar solo is, and I love it, decades later it seems to take away from the whole meaning and mood of the song, and all the guitar jocks forget what the song was about and end up peeing their pants over the guitar solo, which is basically the last half of the whole song.. Shift into testosterone gear, and "now we're talkin' " "oh wow man" attitude shift about the song comes in as if the ballad itself and Karen's singing was no good, which is total B.S. The "power" guitar solo was a new idea with a ballad back then, and very unusual for the Carpenters trademark sound and was done to help sell the new ballad IMO. How many guitar jocks would actually listen to this song without the guitar solo [or their girlfriend insisting they listen to it lol?] Probably none...

Long-time D.J. Richard Gossett on KSAN evening show used to air his "edit" of Goodbye To Love on his fully rock-and-roll/new wave/punk program by cuing it right at the beginning of the second solo --- this KSAN/R.G. fan has never forgotten that. Thank You All KSAN Forever (and KFOG too!) ---- San Francisco Radio was the Best!
