It's incredible to realize that the industry considered them strictly "studio musicians". But when you listen to their live work, they are incredible. Instrumentation? check! Vocals? check! Harmonies (aka That Carpenters sound) check! The Carpenters are one of the most underrated acts of modern music. I love them and never grow tired of listening to their creations. Karen, you are sorely missed. The world has never known a more beautiful voice.

One of the greatest female voices ever showcased on the planet. This wonderful lady sang like an angel from 1969 to 1983. Her brother Richard was also amazing to recognize his sister's vocal talent and to create a world of music which allowed the everyone to enjoy in a timeless style. Thanks !!!

And to think that she was only 23 yrs old during this concert, with the voice of an angel and an endless number of HITS!! Her life may have ended 9 yrs. later, but that beautiful voice will never be silenced. God Bless KC...!! we miss you!!

Karen seems genuinely happy here. She does not seem to be forcing a smile. She radiates happiness and ease.

This whole concert is terrific, but I especially love this performance of "Jambalaya". Karen's enthusiasm is infectious, and her fun-loving spirit and playful delivery are so endearing...I'm 32 and just discovered The Carpenters last year. I am now a huge fan and can't get enough of stuff like this concert. It makes me so sad that Karen is gone...and now we've lost Tony Peluso, too. His solo in "Jambalaya" and also in "Da Do Ron Ron" are excellent examples of his top-notch musicianship.

I've had the luck of seeing more than 400 concerts in person and sadly I never got to see the Carpenters. My concerts day were less than 10 up until Feb 1983, when we lost Karen. The best vocal i can find that matched in any way or sense of the style was and is Trisha Yearwood. I decided I would not allow her voice to pass without me being a part of it. I have met Trisha 9 times in person and have seen 22 concerts from 1992-1998. I even told her once that she reminded me of Karen.

@EmeraldSunshine I agree... She seems in love... Was that a knowing smile between her and the clarinet player during his solo? Whatever the reason, it's so nice to see her that happy, and she really did radiate love to the audience-almost as though she felt more comfortable to Japanese audiences (known for being very respectful) than American crowds??

they prove here that they can do the harmonizing live, just as good as the overdubbing in the studio.

Nay to synthesizers. The Carpenter's band is awesome as well as Karen's voice and Richard's singing and keyboarding.

Richard had to pry her from the drum throne to get her in front for the people to see. She took to fronting like like a total pro. But I'd hate to be the sit-in drummer for her.

modspell she never must abandoned the drums. They used her. She had very low self steem and she was a fragile emotionally person due a issues with her mother (lady dragon).

This isn't a criticism, but an observation: If you listen closely, at the beginning you can hear that Karen sings "'n' just like me, 'n' they long to be / close to you." I don't know why, but she often sang it that way....

Richard is very much rushing this song, I think sometimes you play it so often, you subconciously just like to get through to the next, which cuts against their normally perfectionist professional grain, but you do see that from time to time, theone small weakness in their perfomance MO, and it's once in a while sort of thing, but that forces the singer, sometimes, to squash lyrics like you point out. Play it back on KZitem 75% speed (which is a bit too slow) and see if it doesn't sound better.
