I'm so glad the younger generations are discovering The Carpenters. Richard was a master arranger and Karen was the voice of a generation. They were mocked in the 70's for being too "white bread" in the midst of the rock set, but they have endured and are now recognized as one of the greatest groups ever.

i was in California visiting my cousin , about 30 min drive from where she died at home. She was my favorite singer growing up. i had all her albums. it was sadly ironic that i just happened to be in California at the time,. When i heard on the radio that she had passed away, i broke down and cried all afternoon. I thought i could never cry over a celebrity, but i did!. I found out where her funeral was and took the bus to be there. It was so sad!. They allowed the public to be there!. and i was grateful. I still have the pamphlet that they gave out to us in the church. What a loss!!..There will never be another Karen Carpenter!

In May of '82, when she returned from her hospital stay in NYC, & weighing less than 100lbs, Rich & Karen went into the studio at A & M , & recorded a " work lead " , for " Now ". A work-lead was Karen at the mic., Rich at piano, & Karen singing the song, so Rich could then figure out how to arrange & orchestrate, if needed. it was only after Karen's passing that Richard went back to the studio, arranged & orchestrated, adding the ' OK Chorale " , a 10 person vocal chorale from Long Beach State U., to add backgrounds. " Now " is on the B side of " Voice Of The Heart", & yes, it was the last time Karen stepped up to the mic., & sang ; ever. --------------MJL< 76 y/o

Those people, who never gave Richard the credit he deserved, need to listen to this song. When he combined his incredible arrangements with her angelic voice, they created magic. If you don't believe how important Richard's contributions were to the Carpenters, listen to Karen's solo album. While it's good (because it's Karen), it doesn't measure up to the work she did with Richard.

You don't have to apologize for not being a musician. No one would hold that against you except a snob. I think that Karen Carpenter would've been touched knowing how much her music has moved you. For all intents and purposes, I've been listening to the Carpenters my whole life. I'm 57 these days and I still love listening to Karen Carpenter. And this song still brings me to tears, even though I first heard it shortly after she died - so getting close to 40 years now. It's a shame that it wasn't until after she died that it became "cool" to listen to her. I listened to her long before that and I didn't care what anyone else thought. Her voice was angelic and Richard Carpenter knew how to get the most out of it. This music will live on for many, many years to come. And I'm glad that people like you are getting to enjoy the music that we discovered so many years ago. Just keep being honest with your reviews and don't worry about what others think.

Hello fellow Carpenterphile, I would love to see your reaction to "One More Time (for the good times)" enjoy your honest heartfelt reactions. I have been a fan of Karen and Richard since 1970. Yes, I am old! I was driving home from work in Feb. 1983 when I heard on the radio that Karen had passed away. I never really got over it. I am a musician and I pulled apart Richard's arrangements in College wrote down all the parts. Their overdubbing of their own voices, and Richard's use is multiple layered voices was genius. But it is wonderful to see your delightful reactions and to revisit how I felt the first time I heard Karen sing. One for the ages.

Karen always recorded an initial track. Then after the instruments were arranged and recorded, she would come back in and record a final track for the recording. Karen's voice was amazing. I've read that Karen voice in this recording was a "work lead' done in one take, so that they could make all the music arrangements. Then, Karen was supposed to come back after all the arrangements were finished and sing another take in the studio for the Final Recording. Even singing in a "work lead recording," her voice touches my soul.

Hi Angela, It’s took me many years to listen to Now. It took me many months to watch your reaction to Now. I knew what it would do to you and it did. It’s a beautiful, stunning and haunting song. It’s her last professional studio recording, she did something for a church or school or something. It was her last “One Take Karen” song also. Hugs to you a couple of years later. You mentioned liking to discover new artists. That’s what I want to do with you but it’s difficult. I can request someone and I’ll be the one, even though she has a following, it’s much bigger on TT. All the same, I’m going to link below a Short where she covered Now and explained the song’s significance. She is a Carpenters super-fan and she’s 20. If you play this and I hope you see old comments. You will notice something very very special. So special I’ve seen her accused of lip-syncing Karen. Even in the comments under this video. She only uses lip-sync to herself as did Karen on some performances. This was all one big clue. You know that mug you sell, “That Voice!” IMHO Tori Holub qualifies to be considered a recipient of the honor. I’ve wanted to introduce her to you, as I already know what your reaction will be. So in preview of a future official reaction I’ll leave her Short of Now below and hope you take a minute to watch it. Then tell me how I can do an official request/donation or what? To do it correctly. As an OG Carpenters fan, she is bookending my musical life. I started with Karen and Tori has me for my older years and I hope for a very long time. Did I over hype? Nope, under hyped. I love your reactions, they are from the heart, especially ones to Karen and Richard. Joe kzitem.info/news/bejne/tLCD0aecbmNpkqAsi=Mxb621SzUG-XiEiF . Edit: 3/4/24 I came back to update this. Angela, if you do see this and watch the above video. Then, here is a full length video that Tori, Jim Wilkas and a bunch of musicians released on 3/2/24 Karen’s birthday in heaven. In her honor they recreated We’ve Only Just Begun. It’s in the style of Leonid & Friends but is way better. As an OG Carpenters fan I know you will absolutely adore this video and Her Voice will have a second reference. Maybe others reading this will click the link and tell you to see this. It would be nice. Yes have some tissues at the ready, it may bring forth a tear. Thanks for reading. Here’s the link. kzitem.info/news/bejne/q29r0pqAqqFqiY4si=7a5G0FvuZR2OMsud .

I’d just mention this. I am a trained musician. Classical music, in fact. And I’ve had so many people say they can’t listen to classical music because they haven’t studied it, etc. I usually tell them the same thing that applies to any genre of music: you don’t have to have studied it. That’s not what it is about. Whether it’s rock, pop, jazz, classical, whatever….you just listen to it. If it reaches you emotionally somehow, then it has served its purpose. So you are spot on with your approach! For me, I’ve not yet heard a song that Karen recorded that didn’t find a way through all the clutter to get straight to my heart and mind. It’s really remarkable, her ability to give whatever she sang a life of its own that knows no bounds and that speaks so honestly to us that, as so many have said before, you have no choice but to stop and give her your full attention. There have been so many great artists in every genre across generations , but Karen is truly in a special class all her own. Thank you for your pure, unrestrained reactions to her music, Angela!
