Thanks for the post! Here we see a song with no auto-tune, no embellishments at all, just a pure "note perfect" voice by a young lady who was very special. She left the world way too soon, tragically. The Carpenters rendition of "Rainy Days and Mondays" is really worth a listen to. TC.

the song reached #2 on the charts in 1971... Karen Carpenter was only 21 years old and recorded this song in 1 take reading the lyrics off a napkin! OTHERWORLDLY INCREDIBLE! The song has been recorded by many many singers, both male and female, but according to the writers of the song, the Carpenters version was the best in their opinion... This song "Superstar" followed closely their hits "close to you", "we've only just begun", etc...

There is a huge rabbit hole to go down with their music. They were the top selling group of the 70's in the US. Have sold over 150 million records worldwide. Karens's voice is considered on of the greatest of all times. She and her brother Richard (on the piano) were extremely talented. Richard played piano and did background vocals and all the arrangements while Karen was a world class drummer and lead vocalist. They shot to fame with A Burt Bacharach song called Close to You in 1070. There is a great concert video of their concert in Australia in 1972 that you might want to check out. Sadly we lost Karen in 1983 from the effects of years of anorexia Nervosa. The world was in shock at her passing as she was loved worldwide. There will never be a voice like hers again. So smooth, rich, and pitch perfect. '

The carpenters cut their first album when they signed with A&M records in 1969 and recorded until Karen died in 1983 at 32 years old from complications from anorexia. Karen was a drummer who sang (their are many vids of her singing and drumming). Her brother Richard chose the songs they were going to do or wrote many of them (but not this one it was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell and was originally called "Groupie (Superstar)" played piano and keyboards produced their records and did the arrayments on all their music on all their album all backup singing was done by Karen and Richard and this one has them doing the background. If on tour they did not have the correct instruments (almost all of their songs had a featured instrument some place in it sometimes a trumpet or sax or flute or fuzzy guitar) they played a tape that did and the background sing by them was also on the tape. the only thing live on this vid is Karen. The band tracks on this were overlaid in 2019 by Richard directing the Philharmonic Orchestra. I have been a fan of theirs since I was 25 (55years) I am almost as big a fan of Linda Ronstadt but just almost. Try "Reason To Believe" good demo of her singing and drumming. kzitem.info/news/bejne/zIqNy3ybhmiejX4&ab_channel=awhwong

Luther Vandross did a version of this as well in tribute to the Carpenters as he was like so many a big fan of their music and Karen's incomparable voice. She was known as one take Karen because she could literally hear the song and then just go. She viewed herself as a drummer who could sing though, amazing drumming skills besides that beautiful voice, and it took her brother Richards song choices, arrangements, keyboard and harmony skills to really make it all shine.

Carpenters are Richard Carpenter and sister Karen Carpenter who has the best voice ever IMHO. Also a great drummer. On some lists rated number one singer/drummer. #1 selling american band in the 70's. Have sold at least 150 million records and still counting. Over the years, numerous other artists--as varied as Michael Jackson, Axl Rose, Luther Vandross, k. d. Lang, Lennon, McCartney, Alice Cooper, Shania Twain and many many others have spoken fondly of (Karen Carpenter) and the Carpenters. I was one who personally ignored them in the 70's until about 5 years ago. I can now say best duo ever. Nobody sounds like Karen Carpenter.

Welcome to the Carpenters rabbit hole. They were the #1 act of the 70’s. The sad part is Karen passed in 1983 from the effects of Anorexia Nervosa. She and brother Richard left behind a fairly large collection of amazing songs. Karen was THE VOICE of the decade, maybe ever. Not hyperbole. She had a Contralto voice with a 3.5 octave range. She also sounded unique. Once she starts you know it’s her. Some recommendations are: Rainy Days and Mondays (the official video), Close To You (their first #1), We’ve Only Just Begun, and A Song For You. If Superstar was familiar, are you familiar with Luther Vandross? He covered it about 10 years after, in a more Soulful arrangement. I also have a link to a concert they did in Australia in the early 1970’s. That has a lot of their early hits so it may not be appropriate if you’ll be reacting to more songs individually. Still, a great show. It’s in black and white, I’m not sure when color TV came to Australia. kzitem.info/news/bejne/z2d3rmp3oZdzhqw

I'm from Brazil, my childhood and adolescence were marked by the music of the Carpenters. To this day, Karen's voice makes me feel an indescribable emotion! A "speck" always falls into my eye. It's a unique voice, strong and at the same time smooth and soft as silk, clear as water from a spring! Burt Bacharach said she had the voice of an angel, and I agree!

Strongly suggest delving deeper into this very talented brother and sister duo. Particularly some of Karens drum solos. A wealth of Carpenters music out there I'm sure you both will like, including their Christmas collection. I feel fortunate to have grown up with this wonderful duo and Karen's ANGELIC and emotionally heart gripping voice. 50 years later and she still brings a tear to my eye! Unless she is on the drums, then she brings a smile to my face! So sad to unnecessarily lose her at such a young age. RIP KAREN. WE LOVE YOU!

The Carpenters were a huge part of my teen years back in the 1970s. You need to listen to more of their songs to really appreciate Karen's voice. She has been said to have one of the best of the modern era. I would suggest I Know I Need To Be In Love, Goodbye To Love, For All We Know, Only Yesterday, A Song For You among others. You can't go wrong with a Carpenter's song.
