Your story is still inspirational, 6 years later. I have bipolar 1 and was on meds from March 2023-present. The only time I truly started to feel like the old me was when I started keto in july 2023. I will be starting to wean off the meds from next week.

I started to detach from my real self in my late teens. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1999. I had an extremely dysfunctional adult life, couple that with ADHD and PTSD from sexual abuse, I fought for years to keep myself between the lines. I also had a baby at 23, weight off the scale. She was, in turn, diagnosed as disabled at age 9. I appeared to have wonder woman skills, but underneath it all I was self-destructive and attracted to equally damaged and imbalanced men. I drifted around in the pharmaceutical world, band aid solutions, but temporary results. My daughter was also diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and had suicidal tendencies. She's a morbidly obese 30 year old on mood stabilizers and an anti depressant. I decided ten years ago to say good bye to anti depressants and mood stabilizers. I tested my DNA and there was bipolar disorder, anxiety and ADHD on both sides of the family. A family of depressed, overweight, workaholics who are high strung and anxious people. I decided I would not be a part of that group anymore. After a hysterectomy, hospitalization for pancreatitis, arthritis, a motorcycle, accident, chronic constipation, eczema, hivey skin, asthma and of course obesity. A recent diagnosis of prolapsed bowel as a result of the hysterectomy, was a HUGE wake up call. I changed my life only a month ago. Keto has completely changed my life, within three days of the plan, I felt happy, enthusiastic, positive and full of light, energy off the scale, clear thoughts, focus and attention. I was not fixated on my weight, I was focused on how completely fantastic and hopeful I had become OVERNIGHT. Keto is nothing short of a miracle. Every day I feel like crying away my years of pain and suffering, but I don't have time for that anymore. I am getting better everyday, much like a rebirth. My life has been saved by the choice of whole, low carbohydrate, high fat diet. Truly SAVED. Thank you Carrie, your story resonated greatly. Enough to make me want to write my story. I was a very vivid dreamer for years, since a young child, very detailed and symbolic dreams. Now with keto brain, my dreams have become pretty mundane, lacking details and colours of my bipolar brain dreams. We are all different.

Keto was instrumental in levelling out my bipolar. I'm on still on medication, but it's one pill as opposed to the 4-5 I was on. I sleep better, my manic phases are manageable, my depression is still a bit bad but a lot of the sting has been taken out, I sleep better, I'm not hallucinating in hypo/manic stages. People can say whatever they like about the diet, but for us bipolar folks I believe it is crucial. Early empirical case studies and links between epilepsy, bipolar and ketogenic benefits are emerging. Consider me an n = 1 case study. My quality of life has improved so much on keto that I'm willing to take whatever long-term risks are involved (we'll see about those in future) to stay this table, functional and content.

She was at a conference last weekend linking gut microbiome with mental illness - especially schizophrenia & gluten - the medical commnunity is definitely becoming more open to the links between food/biochemistry & psychiatric disorders. It's very exciting - imagine how many people's suffering will be alleviated if psychiatrists start prescribing ketogenic diet instead of pharmaceuticals!!!

This is an important story that informs the question of “why are so many people depressed”, I’m starting to think that the answer is that we have evolved to feed our brain ketones and that sugar, carbs, and the insulin response starves our brains, and that our brains respond like any starving creature and become depressed and erratic.

Thank you for sharing this it makes me feel much less strange. I too experience bipolar II, I was unable to tolerate medications, in part due to other health issues. I found keto by accident, I was ill and couldn’t eat much so cut the carbs as they are not very nutritious compared to veg and meat. I noticed symptoms I’d suffered for years related to my other conditions improved so I kept doing it and did some research and found keto . Quite quickly I also started to notice my bipolar symptoms were massively reduced, if I slip for more than a few days they start coming back. Keto, at least for me is 100% more effective than the medication ever was and with the exception of dry eyes/mouth causes only beneficial side-effects!

My story is not exactly the same as yours, some of my issues do stem from emotional abuse, but so much of how you describe your depression and bipolar completely resonates with me. I unfortunately have been on Seroquel for over 10 years. I completely identify with how you describe your depression and suicidality. I have slogged through so much darkness for so long. I've been taken to hospital against my will, and then, years later I got myself to the hospital in a taxi and admitted myself to the psych unit. I've been in and out of therapy for years, and nothing has helped. I am still relatively new to keto, but I am hoping to experience better mental health.

He suggested I research keto n bpd2, your video was the 1st I looked at. I watched the first 5 minutes and decided my 21 year old son (who struggles with depression and anxiety) must continue watching with me. Ok we're game. I have been doing the keto with my husband now a week today (kinda) I've been scared to death of the migraine I'll get if i don't have my 1 vice a 20 oz mountain dew a day. I did cheat Friday night and had some pizza at my parents. But, now that I've seen this I'm jumping all in. My only question is my son is 6'2 and weighs 140 and has always been drastically underweight no matter how hard he's tried to gain weight. He hasn't been on medication in over 6 months (not by his own choice, when he turned 21 he lost his insurance). Is the keto diet the best thing for him to get into. How did you find out that your serotonin and dopamine pathways are broken in 40 ways? Your story is similar to mine although I do not have bipolar as far as I am aware. Severe depression has always been most problematic for me. I also have a pretty severe non-celiac gluten sensitivity which seems to affect my cognitive and mental health, and I am homozygous mutant for the more severe MTHFR mutation. Despite having the mutation my level of b12 is pretty high. Would you still recommend taking methylated b vitamins? I did take them for a while but I don't think I noticed any improvement in mood from them. I also have had a lot of success with low carb diets/keto for resolving my mental health issues. I felt "normal" for the first time in my life on a strict ketogenic diet. But I have had trouble being consistent with it for the past several years and have been back in the throes on mental illness. I finally have gotten to a breaking point and I am making serious changes again. So hearing your story is really inspiring me and motivates me to get back on track with it.

No, I no longer have episodes. I miss the hypo-mania, if I'm honest, I used to get so much done! - but they weren't worth the depressive episodes. I have talked too thousands of people over the years and one thing is clear to me - everyone is different. I can't say what you will experience if you have a cheat meal. You might be fine, it might be awful. But it's generally easier to just stay keto all the time than risk the rollercoaster that might ensue from a bunch of sugar.

For me...and this probably is totally inappropriate and I will recognize that even how horrible this has been it’s still not anywhere close to my metaphor and example. It, felt, like the holocaust going on, in my brain, at the cellular level. Everyday and every second.
@ash20453
4 жыл бұрын
Sadness and feeling blue aren’t descriptives of this... it’s more close to the picture in your head of untreateded disease in any other venue. The sight and feeling states of seeing someone die from AIDS, a type 1 diabetic going off to die before insulin as a medication existed, or a person infected by rabies and had not gotten the vaccine in time. Or a picture of a family in squalor in a 3rd world country. It’s like poverty, clutter, never ending feelings of decay and or suicidal over excitement going on like a picture wheel of feelings that your brain has decided it’s stuck on. It’s not poetic, picturesque, cathartic or moving in the moment for you or your family members seeing it and putting up with you. It just looks like a unsightly mundane embarrassment or everyday tragedy. But it’s just you and eventually lifes gonna move on with or without you in it.
@ash20453

And ultimately the depths and despair and invisible horror of it all which is behind why you haven’t showered in two weeks, or gotten out of bed at all except to maybe eat a bit or go to the bathroom, and you’re in a house completely dirty and cluttered with mess...is something you’re gonna have to accept that you’ll never truly feel the recognition, validation and connection with some certain other people in your life or most especially with some family members. It’s yours to know on that deep level. And yeah validation can be vaguely elusive in a time period where everyone evidently has clinical depression. Not to completely “read” or throw shade on people who do that, it is always way more harmful to not get help, and to doubt someones depression than it is to over sensationalize it..which is just incessantly annoying but as a society we will eventually move on and obsess about something else

If we could rely on police to be rational and not exacerbate the situation I would agree. Unfortunately Police have become more frightened over the years and are seemingly more likely to kill a mentally ill individual than to actually help. Literally: tazering troubled kids in showers causing them to die, for example.
