The first new trees were planted in Carrifran Wildwood on the 1st January 2000. They have now been joined by a further 750,000, mostly of local provenance. This talk covers the history of the project, the development of the planting plan, and how the re-created forest, non-planted areas, and general biodiversity have changed over the last 23 years. It also takes a look at two other major projects run by the Borders Forest Trust, Corehead near Moffat, and Talla & Gameshope adjoining Carrifran to the north.
The talk is by Dr Crinan Alexander. After an Edinburgh PhD in experimental taxonomy followed by a fellowship in cotton breeding in Nigeria, Crinan returned to RBGE in 1979 to work on the European Garden Flora, a project that lasted for well over 20 years. He was involved in setting up the MSc in The Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants and was its first RBGE director. He was drawn into the incipient Wildwood Group in the mid-1990s, before the site itself had been found, and has been an active member of the Steering Group ever since.
