I am in AL about just a bit north latitude of DSH and live in a subdivision. I have to use raised beds because the AL red clay is like concrete. I sprinkle the cosmic purple in with the danver's half long. The wife and the neighborhood kids just love to pick the carrots and if someone gets a purple one you would think they hit the lottery. Thank you Danny and Wanda for all the informative videos. The more I learn about how it is done the more I can show these kids that carrots, tomatoes and peppers are not made in the produce section of the local grocery store. It works for what I am trying to do and I am enjoying all the videos on "putting stuff up" . Thank you and May God bless DSH.

I've grown cosmic purple a few times and its a tasty carrot with cool colors. But they were not as sweet as the little finger carrot or the danvers half long until, they got left behind one year. I missed about half a row till after a good hard frost. Then i noticed the tops of the carrots where the squash had kinda grown over them. We pulled them and boy after frost they were sweet like candy so now when i grow them I use them as a late planting for fall harvest. Only pull after the hard cold sets in. I might try over wintering in place too. Put a bale on them and just dig when i need a few in the winter. Happy gardening.

Great video. If you have clay soil do not water after planting. Water the row, then plant the seeds on the watered row and cover. Clay soil will crust over and the carrots will not come up if watered after planting. Other than this one change for clay soils, Danny’s planting method is absolutely the best.

I have begun planting pelleted carrots because I simply cannot see those seeds. I can space the carrots very easily as the pellets are white and easy to see against the dark soil. They grow very well. I wet the soil so that it turns color and plant the carrot pellets. No more thinning. Will remember to add the wood ash from the two wood stoves we have.

Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! One piece of advice, if you're close enough to the Gulf to harvest kelp or have a source to get it, please try adding it fresh or dried to your soil, you'll be shocked at the results. Yes, carrots love potassium, which is why carrots and so many other plants love kelp, packed with minerals. Just remember if you harvest fresh kelp to rinse well with fresh water. If you use worm tea, try adding kelp and or comfrey to your soaking bag ... amazing results!!!

Just watched a video on whether to use kelp or kelp fertilizer,and opinions of others say its just as good to use leaves and worm castings instead ! Your opinion would be great on this.
@sfetterly6200
6 жыл бұрын
Wanda, I'm a huge fan of using nearly all types of natural waste to fertilize our soil. You can't go wrong with worm castings or worm tea, but when using leaves, wood chips, saw dust and other yard waste it's important to compost these things for at least 1 full year and if possible to inoculate with fungus, but most important is testing PH, many woods and leaves breakdown highly acidic. Kelp requires only drying or aging wet 7 to 10 days before tilling into the soil and is nearly PH neutral. Best of luck in your growing.

A good way to thin out carrots some is to first mix them with sand, mix well, then spread. It not only spreads the seed but shows you exactly where you are tossing them because of the light colored sand. You will still need to thin some later but it makes your seeds go further.
