How important are smooth pans and tilts to your video creations? How much is it worth?

Unfortunately, I've read some bad things about Cartoni quality, particularly with continuous drag, on Reddit's cinematography forum.

You compare the pans and tilts of a Cartoni pro video system to those of a mainly photo head from Manfrotto!? What a bait-and-switch? Your title says "Cartoni Tripod Beats Out Sachtler". Show us a side-by-side of the Cartoni and *Sachtler* pro video systems!

Strange title. You compare photo non fluid Manfrotto head with fluid much more expensive Cartoni video head and said cartoni beats Sachtler... And yes, I've watched your video from start to the end.

First, the Manfrotto is a fluid head. For the rest, the humour went over your head.

Being completely honest, comparing an old Sachtler photo head to a new Cartoni video head is not a fair comparison. It would be like comparing a Ford Fiesta to a brand new Mercedes. A more fair comparison would be to test the Sachtler Active 8T and the Cartoni video head. While both Sachtler and Cartoni are respected brands in the industry, technology and design have evolved over the years, and newer models often incorporate advancements that older models lack. Therefore, it's essential to compare similar models that are designed for the same purpose to make a fair assessment of their performance. It's important to make an apples-to-apples comparison to ensure that you're evaluating the equipment's features and capabilities accurately. Otherwise, you may end up with skewed results that don't reflect the true performance of each piece of equipment.

First, I didn't compare "an old Sachtler photo head to a new Cartoni video head;" I compared an old Manfrotto head to an old Cartoni head. Second, I specifically made the point that I decided against the new Activ 8 -- it's referred to obliquely via the tongue-in-cheek title. All of these decisions were predicated to a large degree on budget, all covered over the course of the video, which I doubt you watched.

Conclusion… used Gear can still be great especially when ya consider what you’re paying. I direct comparison the Cartoni holds up pretty well but being honest the new aktiv 8 has a weightrange of 1-12 kg. Matching your 100mm Cartoni with 75mm bowl and a huge benefit when it comes to weight. I own both a flowtech 75 with fsb 8 and a O’Connor 1040 Flowtech and have to say those pieces of kit are some of my best investments that I’ve ever made. But if you don’t have that kind of budget the used market will offer you some awesome alternatives with great pricing. Nice Video. See ya

If money were no object, I'd buy the Sachtler acktiv 8, for sure. Aside from its weight, the Cartoni is a joy to use, as I was reminded using it yesterday. Used can definitely be the way to go.

@@creativegreats6924 From just looking a the specs of both tripods I’d say yes because your getting the same performance at a much lighter and smaller package (and the new features that come with an active/flowtech system). How the head compares next to the cartoni is impossible for me to say because I’ve only used the sachtler.

Well, Cartoni is not exactly a ''leading manufacturer''. Although Cartoni are decent tripods, but they don't come close to Sachtler. The legs don't extend really smooth if the clamps are tensioned enough to really hold weight and there is some flex in them if you pan with maximum friction. It is partly due to my style, I like to work with quite high friction, but still, the recomended legs are not stiff enough. I also found alu legs to be easier to extend, they slide out quite nicely, carbon legs can have unnecessary friction, probably the precision of carbon tubes is not at the highest level. I also found an issue with the head. For normal operation it is pretty decent, but when you need to make just minor corrections during shot on telephoto lens, you notice a bit of tackiness. Sachtler wins hands down.

Certainly Cartoni continues to be a leading manufacturer of tripods and heads chosen by many filmmakers. Speaking for myself and the tripod shown in this video, there is *no* flex. I also like lots of tension. You say you prefer "alu" (aluminum?) legs. These are aluminum legs. The Sachtler I compared is carbon fibre. I suspect you didn't watch the video and are reacting to the title, which was meant to be humorous but went over your head.

@@RaymondParkerPhoto I did watch in entirety, that wasn't a direct comment to your video, just my observation and experience with both, alu and carbon models. Leading company? Absolutely not in Europe. Strange since they are Italian, and by default, European company. Leading companies would be Sachtler, Vinten, O'Connor, then, maybe, Cartoni, probably nechk and neck with Matthews. I didn't even mention Manfrotto, which is, by volume, in front of Cartoni, but is not the same class. And one interesting detail. I worked for a company which bought several tripods from Cartoni, a few models, each in , at least a few examples. When I encountered a ''sticky'' head, I thought it was just a new head, not yet worked out, I tried other tripods. After a few weeks, there was only one head that didn't stick, all the rest did stick, but to a very different degree, two of them were critical. We sent them back to be serviced, but came back a bit better. So, no, Cartoni is not a leading manufacturer. And trust me, I've tried pretty much products of all relevant manufacturers and then some. They are one of the most important manufacturers, but not a leading one.

I just got an older Cartoni head (Focus HD) and it is much better at panning and tilting than my Manfrotto or my Really Right Stuff BH-55 (BH-55 only pans). Fluid head for video for sure. The one I got was cheap because it the adjustments were out, so I re-adjusted back into spec, and I have a new lock lever coming in for the broken one. I was considering a Sachtler but it wouldn't adjust to as low a weight, and I'd like to be able to put my binoculars on them when birdwatching too. I'm going back to Yellowstone, hope to capture nice video this time. I got some of a couple baby bears playing, the video would be much better if the pans were smooth.

I love your presentation. You're a natural! The manfrotto pan should be much smoother, unless you are using something under $100. The 502AH may not be like either of these two brands, but it is much better than the demo. The tilt is their weak point. Combining the two planes is even worse. Congrats. That's a hell of a deal. There are three names you'll see on every movie set everywhere: Sachtler, O'Connor and Cartoni. I owned a Sachtler Studio 7 back in the day and it set me back ten grand in the late eighties. It handled 40lb cameras with 500mm lenses with ease and made me look good every time I used it. Based on my previous Sachtler experience, I recently bought a Sachtler Ace. Even at sub $600, legs included, it's a POS. The legs are horrid and the head makes me look like an idiot. The only regret you'll ever have with the Cartoni is with the weight. I'm sure you'll cope. Isn't quality delightful? A good fluid head is a joy every time you use it. Practice doing long lens figure eights.

Hi Peter. I think it was you who commented on my earlier announcement that I was considering investing in the Sachtler. Thanks for your follow-up. Absolutely, quality makes life, or at least video production, delightful, rather than wasted time and curses. I'll take your advice and practice those figure-eights. Additionally, perhaps some weight-lifting might be in order.

Sure, that's another factor, but certainly not the only one. The foundation is, as I hope this video illustrates, a good tripod/head. Then, in regards to technique we would certainly consider, for example, the seven second rule of thumb in relation to camera angle, and the focal length of the lens, to mention a few other variables. Then, like any "rule," it should only be considered in terms of the effect one is intending to introduce into the scene.

With Manfrotto you also can have same results. It looks like you did extra bad movements for the manfrotto sorry.
@RaymondParkerPhoto
2 жыл бұрын
Are you suggesting I *deliberately* made the movements with the Mafrotto "extra bad?" I can assure you that is not the case and your suggestion is offensive. If you watched the video, I surmise that perhaps the Manfrotto has become "worn" and that it is "less smooth than it once was," which admittedly isn't an endorsement. The other possibility is that, despite the Manfotto head's rating, the video rig I'm using now is too much for it to handle. If any criticism could be levelled at my comparison, it's that the fight isn't fair; the Cartoni is in a different league.
@steffidichter7662

I belive you 100% that the Cartoni is the better one, but your footage from the Manfrotto is really bad. I had a Sachtler and a Manfrotto and in smoothness i can do the same with both if i want, same footage like yours with the Cartoni. I think your Manfrotto has a problem.
