Cary Grant was voted the quintessential movie star of all time in a poll some years ago, and it is hard to argue the point. "North by Northwest" and "To Catch A Thief" are unsurpassed entertainments and examples of Hitch at his finest - but one cannot imagine either of these films without Grant himself. Not only was Grant handsome, talented and charming, one got the sense that he never took himself too seriously - as so many stars do today.

It is beyond me that Cary Grant never received an Oscar. I agree with Michael Caine when he says they do not give Oscars for funny performances. But Cary was the FULL package............. just check out his outstanding performances in dramas such as None but the Lonely when his mother is on her deathbed, or when he pleads with the judge in Penny Serenade ! Outstanding ! Obviously his comedic roles speak for themselves. Add to this potent mix, a self effacing humour, wit charm and the best looking male to have EVER graced the screens, well you simply have the BEST actor of all time. Oscar or no Oscar !

I'll personally take a classic Cary Grant film over what's coming out of theaters now any day of the week. If you're a fan of his check out his daughter's book: "Good Stuff"- great pictures of him in later years and sweet memories from the one who knew him best. It's one of my favorites.

There is a wonderful story in which Cary Grant , then in his 70s , was attending a film charity event and gave his name to the woman in charge of seating; she said, "You don't look like Cary Grant". He replied, "I know, nobody does". He was an extraordinary and charming actor; he was in arguably, Hitchcock's greatest films; North By Northwest, Notorious, Suspicion, To Catch A Thief. He was a loyal friend, and next to Astaire, the epitome of style and good dressing.

IngridBergmanRocked - I totally agree. I have watched Casablanca twice, and it sad to say that I got bored with both times. However, Notorious is my favorite movie ever. I have seen it 1000X and can't get enough of it. The chemistry b/w Cary and Ingrid is breath taking. It was my first real DVD that I have bought. LOVE NOTORIOUS & CARY GRANT OBSESSIVELY. T

He was also one of the few that bucked the studio system and went his own way, writing his own contracts. This is one of the reasons he had to wait so long for an Oscar. Great strength of character. I have a silly wish. I would love to know if he could still speak his (and mine) home town Bristol dialect. Just imagine, Cary Grant speaking like Vicky Pollard!

I'm 32 years old and there isn't one actor today who could hold a match to Cary Grant.. My mother lived in LA back in the mid 50's and met Cary Grant at an Italian place called Vinncenzo's in LA.. She didn't know he was a film star till after she met him but said in person he was unbelievably beautiful... He was 6'2 which is unheard of nowadays where every male actor is 5'9 or shorter.

The Bond producers Saltzman and Broccoli considered several prominent actors for the role, however, Grant, at 58, was arguably too old for the role in 1962, when the series commenced. Moreover, they were operating on a modest budget for the initial two Bond films; Dr. No was made for a million and From Russia With Love was below five million. Grant would have demanded a sweeter deal to do multiple films. Connery was ultimately at war with the producers over money generated by the films.

Dr. No, the first james bond, was made in 1962. Grant was born in 1904, so he would have been 57. So I assume that the producers deemed him too old for the part, as the author of James Bond had also died, so I assume they just chose a younger actor..

@sat233238 I find it amazing that no one has pointed this out to you, but Ian Fleming had Cary Grant in mind when he created James Bond, at least, somewhat. They wanted Cary Grant to play Bond, but he refused, saying that he felt he was too old. I do agree, though. Cary Grant would have been an amazing Bond.

@ecoke69 They're are rumours who said he was gay or biseksual (living with Randolph Scott for 12 years). I must say that his acting does show some feminine touches. But...who the hell cares? Maybe he teased the media about it or he was himself not sure about it. I think he's one of the best actors in Hollywood: funny, impeccable timing, incredibly physical acting (from his vaudeville days) and very diverse roles. Yes, he was really a good actor and a stand out persona. He made it look so easy!
