Case knife quality seems to be a roll of the dice. For 85 bucks it should at least be equal a 15 dollar Rough Ryder in fit & finish. Also, when someone sends a knife in for repair, they should have their best guy inspect the knives before returning them. They make enough money off these knives to at least insure you get your knife back in better condition than it was before. So far I have been lucky with my 3 Case knives from mail order. @@BigRedEDC Case recommends not sending your warranty repair with original box, tin, tissues and paperwork. That outcome could have been avoided if you would have just wrapped the knife in bubblewrap and shipped it off. As for the grit and grime, a quick flush of the pivot or a good blast from an air compressor blow gun and that problem is solved. Centering was solved at warranty. That leaves the gapping. Some gapping okay with Rough Rider, but not Case? Huh?

I believe that if companies pay their employees enough to compensate them for good work and terminate those who don’t consider the Quality of the product imperative to retaining employment. It would probably solve many problems and quality and control. A company like case should be able to figure out that the more times you have to handle a product the more it cost you money so handling the product one time would be most cost effective. It would also help in their reputation. While I was in college earning my degree I was fortunate enough to me a instructor at hamburger university, school for McDonald’s managers and owners. I receive some very valuable advice, a complaint as a gift. You can apply that to all services as well as the products we consume. Just think about if a consumer got a raw hamburger from McDonald’s and did not complain about it. The outcome could be hazardous to consumers and devastating to the company. If someone complains about the raw hamburger it could potentially save lives by stopping the spread of a food born illness. Just think about it, if you have a wonderful meal and everything goes great how many people are you gonna tell about it? If you have a really bad meal and everything sucked how many people are you going to tell about that? The answer is, if you have a great meal you’re most likely just going to bring it up with a small group of people. If you have the worst meal ever, the food was horrible and the servers were rude and unpleasant most likely you are going to tell everyone who will listen about it. This video is a fine example. Hopefully the manufacturer will listen and improve the product. It’s not brain surgery so it should be easy to figure out that this is a very competitive market and the more happy customers you have the more customers you will retain.

I'm not ready to give up on any American Knife maker. I see very clearly, that China has fully taken an economic advantage with this whole Covid mess. That said, Case really needs to work harder on fixing known issues. It will be better of them to scale back on production numbers and concentrate on quality control. If they truly took a hit on staff, then they need get the new staff trained and up to speed. Reduce the number of patterns in production, and make sure final checks are being done by the most experience staff available.

From what I've seen and heard it sounds like Case may be riding on their name and pushing out knives that aren't properly QC'd. As for the condition after warranty centering is good but backspacing is still bad and who sends a filthy knife after warranty shows a real lack of professionalism and care about their products. Just my opinion. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

Maybe the problem is limitations of outdated pin construction and can't really be fixed without switching to screws. Not only Case, most of my traditionals have quality issues, while even $20 modern flippers almost never, or at least not that bad. And my only slipjoint with no gaps, no dirt and good centering is Manly and it has screws frame.

@@MattP-BandB My Rough Riders aren't very good. OK for the price, but have gaps between frame and bone and blade centering is horrible. Always very crooked and often touching liner. Don't know about Buck or GEC, they don't sell here. Forgot about Vic because of poor and soft steel. Boker Barlows are good, but for that price they should be. There are some good pinned knives, but why bother with pins when majority have issues while majority of screws don't and can be user adjusted.
@MattP-BandB

@@Sicarius888 My experience with Rough Rider is with their Reserve line and by and large they are great. Putting aside the steel issue with Victorinox, their construction is above reproach. My point is that it is possible to make excellent quality pinned knives for those that appreciate the history of them. Are screwed together knives “better”? I don’t know about that. I’ve seen some horrible Benchmades etc. Bottom line is if a company is serious about building whatever kind of knife they intend on, it can be done properly if they care to.

Case is not doing themselves any favors when the warranty shop doesn’t have proper supervision and quality control. In my experience, Case knives should be sent back to the seller inside their return window for an exchange or refund. Clearly to them the turn around time at no cost is preferable to making it right with their shrinking customer population.

They should have sent you a new knife. For a company priding itself on quality workmanship, they've presented a lousy image of themselves. I'm sorry things did not work out better. I'm also in discussion with an eBay retailer over my grey bone sodbuster blade edge scraping on the top of the liner. It looks to me as if the tang is slightly twisted. I sent pictures of the flaws and they wrote back saying that, quote: "We do see some Case knives with off-centered blades. I understand that this is frustrating, however, this is a common thing in Case knives and the manufacturer does not consider it as defect." Apparently it's common and that makes it okay? I will, naturally, challenge this.

Really like how well you followed everything. Kept us up on all the updates. It would have been better if they had sent you something either saying we fixed it or we are replacing it. Can tell they are used to shipping Zippos as they have a stronger container versus a knife box. An envelope isn't going to protect it. I would guess they replaced it with one that no telling how long it had sat on the shelf. Maybe they fixed it and the process just exposed it to a bunch of airborne particulates. Don't know which but either way that is terrible. I think you are being to nice to them but that is just me. Probably would have had better experience contacting SMKW. They would have probably checked replacement before sending it. Definitely not impressed with their warranty department on that knife. Well looks like you have a couple hours of clean up to do so won't hold you up any longer.

There is no excuse for that gapping. If a $14 knife can have almost perfect gapping then an $80 knife can have two scales that are proper and put together correctly. That one side is clearly warped.

@@BrandonGavin_EDC i don't disagree. I just know it's caused by the stamping process. Then not having high QC. At this price, like it or not, you're not gonna get super fit and finish in an American made knife. I know Rough Ride can do it at $15 with $1 per hour wages, no OSHA regulations, no EPA regulations but an American company can't. Even GEC isn't perfect. I don't buy Case because they're quality has dropped but I also understand why it's dropped.
