I found a card scanner on a cash machine once. Was about to take cash out, I always gave the bit that stuck out a fairly firm pull. This came right off, had some button cells in it and a small antenna attached. I was due to go on holiday and was taking out money before leaving so I dropped it into the shop attached to the machine, then phoned the police. The police seemed to want to know more about me and treated me with a high degree of suspicion rather than wanting to know about the device attached. I doubt they ever even went out to pick it up from the shop owner.

Simply disabling the NFC feature of your device will disable the NFC antenna and prevent any attempts to skim or otherwise defraud the card emulation software. It may seem moderately inconvenient to turn on and off every time but both platforms have macro apps which can be used to create a simple one click button on your home screen for this purpose. I have one that with one tap does three things, 1) Enable NFC, 2) Wait 15 seconds, 3) Disable NFC this I find is plenty long enough even when running across a terminal that is overly finnicky about the exact placement of the device and takes a few seconds of hovering around to get it to activate. Yeah if you need to attempt the transaction multiple times for some reason it would need to be pressed again but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I've found it a helpful prompt to pause and check the status reported in the activity log of the app matches that of the merchants POS system. If these are not in agreement then something odd is going on either one of the parties is giving inaccurate information or a third party has injected such into the communication. It's better to use Apple Pay or Google Pay to do contactless payments for a few reasons: 1. The details transmitted are a virtual account number, not your actual card details 2. Using these systems requires you to unlock the device, even for low-value payments, which is more secure than cards which can be used without a PIN for contactless payments up to a limit, so a thief can't take payments from your phone without you knowing. 3. The details for these accounts are maintained on a security chip inside the phone which the NSA might be able to crack, but thieves can't so, unlike a card, if you lose your phone or have it stolen, they can't use it to make payments. 4. The details of any payments are available immediately within the app, so if you aren't sure if a payment went through or was taken twice, you can check there and then. 5. If you do lose your phone or get it stolen, you can remote wipe it.

a) it's PIN, not PIN number. The "N" in PIN stands for number. b) How would that work, with all the thousands of different numbers on dozens of different systems?

Did you ever watch the show called something like The Real Hustle? They did a thing one episode where they built a dummy cash machine with a person hiding inside it, she sat there and scanned peoples cards and then posted a message on the screen saying machine out of cash, people walk off none the wiser. TONS of people walked up and used the machine it was scary, obviously they didn't actually scam the people and they were told what they had done shortly after, but it showed just how easy this kind of thing is if you've got the balls to do it.

So in order to receive any money someone tries to obtain by contactless fraud, they have to pass KYC fraud and money laundering checks and provide details of a bank account that they have to prove is their account. Then your card issuer will always pay you back any contactless fraud. So not as "risky" as people make out.

Another thing about contactless… I’m not sure how reliable it is, but if you have more than one card in your wallet that is contactless and you put the wallet to a machine requesting a payment, it will fail and not go through

If you keep multiple bank cards together in the same part of you wallet, it confuses the RFID signal and won't accept the payment so you don't even need a foil lining or RFID sleeve.

One thing to note is the criminal can move very fast with technology. I spoke to a scanner guy in London over 15 years ago. They had a suitcase sized RFID reader that they took to Paddington station and stood near a particular choke point for passengers, they knew most kept their wallet in a certain pocket and this scanner could transact with the card from about 1 foot away. Over the course of a month they were taking thousands of £10 payments from cards. As the limits increased so did their profits. I only got an RFID card recently and straight away bought an anti-scan wallet. They same guy taught me about a whole load of scams they had on the go in London, these people are not thugs, but highly intelligent criminals that almost never get caught.

I believe that multiple contactless cards together in your wallet stop a machine working. Not sure if hackers have got around this, but if you put your wallet full of cards up to, say a supermarket contactless scanner it should not work because it detects multiple cards. So your cards in a wallet should in theory be harder to scan in your wallet. Someone with just one card may not be so lucky

Contactless is a lot safer than most people realise. The transactions use something called risk based authentication. The issuer knows everything you ever bought and where you bought it. If you always drink Starbucks or always shop at tescos. You might be ok using another shop in your area or the same chain in a different area. However you will find if you go to an unusual place and shop an unusual brand it will ask for the card to be inserted. This way contactless is actually more secure because you are not risking someone seeing or capturing your pin. It is also worth noting that you have way better protection with a credit card. So if you always use your credit card not only do you benefit from the protection but you also have a very good case if your debit card is cloned since you never use it for purchasing.

Never pay for gas with a debit. Use cash or credit cards. A few years back I used a debit card to buy gas and within 30 mins my card was being used in Germany , California and Niagara Falls . Thankfully the bank caught it and notified me straight away and we got it stopped then got a new card…. And have one of those anti scanning purses

I don’t use contactless cards, I personally don’t think there a good idea. So in my personal view that is the easiest way to reduce the chances of this sort of thing from happening. I like a bit more privacy than somone knowing exactly how much I spend in one day, where and when.

My bank doesn’t require a card to draw cash from an ATM. I’m given one-use codes via the app. They time out after 15 minutes. Super convenient and reduces risk of cloning. Of course the main reason I always do this is because I never have my card on me; unlike my phone.

First I am glad you didnt spread false informations. Cover the EPP with other hand while typing PIN and no camera would be able to record it. If your PIN isnt stupidly easy you are safe even if the card is cloned. New ATMs are often equipped with mirrors on the top of the fascia - use them to check if there is no danger behind you. Keep your contactless card in RFID blocking sleeve to avoid any risk.

It depends on the situation. They could require a 'source of funds check' to see where any recently deposited funds have come from or if they have concerns about your identity. They could also refuse if they think you are under threat or duress or are being coerced into making the withdrawal.

I always take a receipt to check it against the 'Pending' section of your online account...if it matches then good but only get rid of the receipt when the bank clears the transaction and is in the statement section, if it differs then, you have a receipt to argue with.

It’s called card clash. Legitimate card readers will reject a card clash with a unique set of beeps. Whether a skimmer would have the same issue I’m unsure, they may just be able to skim all cards at the same time
