I am a professional jazz pianist, and I am very pleasantly surprised by this piano. Ideal for practice rooms or for small gigs. It's so lightweight that you could probably carry it wherever you want to go. The keys are nice enough, and the sounds are ok. My only concern would be how sturdy it might - or might not - be...it probably won't take much hard use on the road. But, I could be wrong. For beginners, or for someone who wants a decent practice piano, I can't see how it can be beat by anything but a good acoustic one.

Thank you for the review. I plan to buy this for my daughter to keep her interested in piano since she's outgrown the cheap keyboard and we don't have space for a real piano. I've followed your guitar reviews for a long time and was pleased to see that you covered this. This will be yet another purchase based on your review.

i just bought this today wanted to upgrade to weighted keys and this one was the best priced so if your on a low budget this is well worth it.great sound and realistic piano feel.

+TKeeper94 If you like a bright piano then choose the Korg. It's secondary voices are also better than the Casio. I prefer a mellow piano so that is why I opted for the Casio, as for its secondary sounds I never use them.

Very good review, thanks. I do have one question, how did you find the weighting of the keys? This would be my first digital piano and I appreciate that at this end of the price range it will not be a perfect replica of an acoustic piano, but I would like it to be close enough so as not to pick up bad playing habbits? Thanks.

The weighting is pretty much like an acoustic piano but remember that acoustic pianos do vary from one model to another. Older pianos may require a stronger touch as a worn hammer has further to travel before it hits the string.

Thanks. I think I am now pretty much set for ordering one of these now.

Great review John. I would like to ask, is the piano good for someone who has very little experience with pianos? I've only ever used a very old keyboard with no weighted action, and since I have the chance to accept free piano tuition for a few years, I would like to purchase a digital piano at a modest price. Thanks.

This model should do the job for you. Any weighted action will take a little getting used to but the first time you try a real piano you will appreciate your trainng on this one.

Hello, if i just want to use it like a midi controller... with my pc and some bosendorfer or bechstein vst program... the only important thing will be the mechanical feedback right?, is it good? feels like a real piano or at least close a bit the gap between this and more expensive digital pianos? Thanks!

It has a heavy, realistic feel but there is an audible 'Thunk,' as the keys return to rest. This would be loud enough to be picked up on microphone if you were singing along. As a modern MIDI / USB controller it should work but do not quote me. It does not have the old style 5 pin MIDI connections so you would need some sort of interface to use old modules.

I want to buy one can you tell me if there are any problems with the piano.especially keyboard key problems

The only thing is that, in common with many other pianos, there is quite a noisy thump as you release the keys. If you are wearing headphones you should not notice it.

What's the difference between this and the CDP 220? What can you say about Casio and yamaha electric pianos? Thanks!
@JohnCouplandguitar
9 жыл бұрын
Rodri Btz The current 220R has a drum section added and an LED screen. In general as you spend more each note is sampled at a higher quality. On the cheapest dps only some of the notes are sampled and that sample is then stretched across 4 or 5 notes so you can hear the joins. On the top models each note is sampled at several different playing strengths. Casio and Yamaha are both good but different, just as real pianos differ in sound. Not better or worse, just your personal taste.

John Coupland Thanks! I'm currently between the Casio AP-250 and the AP-450. The main difference is that the last one has a max polyphony of 256 tones and the first one is 128. I want to ask you if that difference really matters. I'm a beginner piano player BTW. Thanks sir
@JohnCouplandguitar

Rodri Btz Back in the 80's polyphony was only 6 which meant that as soon as you hit the 7th note, the 1st cut off. When technology got up to about 24 notes we had enough to play with a normal piano technique. 128 will be more than enough. Higher numbers would only be needed if you are using the machine as a sound source for a multi-track computerised piece.

If you press the lower keys the Piano drowns the Strings out. It is a bit better if you press the keys nice and hard

+John Coupland Hey John, I'm from Glasgow myself. I've been looking at this piano as well as the Korg SP-170S but I'm torn between them. Would very much appreciate your input as this is my first piano. I have a tight budget and not enough room for an acoustic so it will have to be between these 2

Is it worth 250 pounds to learn on?
@JohnCouplandguitar

+Sigma 4 It is always better to learn on a decent instrument as many give up playing because they mistakenly believe that the horrible noise they are hearing is down to their playing rather than a cheap and nasty instrument.
